Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

I was in town this weekend and noticed a big yellow crane off of 690 that looked like it was perhaps in the Upstate parking lot near the Upstate Biotech Accelerator. Anyone know what's going on there?

Yeah, Gilbane's building a ~200-unit student apartment building at 800 East Fayette.

I thought I remembered reading about a new student housing development going there, but couldn't find the article (I probably posted it in this thread somewhere).

Yeah, 5-over-1 construction, main entrance at the corner of Wellington Place and Forman, no commercial of any kind. Not the most exciting, but decent infill.

Yeah that area has been so desolate for so long that any reasonable development is good development, IMO.

The black bear that was spotted over by the Great Northern Mall is now over on Molloy Rd near the Cardinal Health building. I think DEC might want to rethink the strategy of just letting him find his mother.

That bear is probably a young 2-yo male and has been chased away by his mother to protect this year's cubs. He's on his own and they tend to wander around looking for a new range. His ears are a little big for his head and they're poking out on the side. They're generally harmless and will knock over some bird feeders as they wander through.

Older bears look like they have little ears.

We had just that scenario twice in my town in the last couple years. They trap them and drop them off in the Adirondacks, I think.

"Clay, N.Y. — A black bear has been spotted twice in the town of Clay and sheriff’s deputies are asking that you don’t go near it.

The bear was spotted by a home security camera near Soule and Oswego roads on Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Monday morning the bear had wandered over to the areas of Maple and Caughdenoy Roads, deputies said.

Deputies notified the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, they said.
If you come across the bear deputies ask that you do not go near it. If the curiosity is unbearable watch from a distance and make sure to not block the bear’s route, deputies say.

Residents should take down bird feeders, secure trash cans and make sure no food is on the grill, deputies said.

The bear doesn’t realize it is in neighborhoods and is just looking for food, deputies said."

I heard last night that a new beer hall is in the works near that new student housing building going up in the old Upstate parking lot north of the University. May have even seen a couple renderings and it looks really cool. A planned rooftop bar and now a beer hall? Syracuse actually getting some big city amenities. Should complement the new Buried Acorn taproom going in nearby.

Right on cue:

That's great. Wish I'd gotten in on the ground floor in this neighborhood; the potential was clear, and now it's finally being realized.

Lots of opportunity in that area, for sure.

Learned about this in the last hour. P-S scooped a lot of people here, apparently.

Very good news. Shame that this huge overbuilt structure can't be repurposed, but that's where we are.

The real shame is that they tore down what was originally there to build that crap!

Also, the security company who got stiffed by Felix Sater's ownership group and decided that a build-your-own-severance-package that involved stripping all the copper from the property (including thousands of feet of flashing from the roof) was their best recourse.

That didn't help.

Asbestos and lead aside, that was an impressive structure. Bowling alleys, full gym and pool, spectacular views. Heavy, heavy structural steel. And more electricity than 630,000 square feet could ever hope to use.

Trouble was that the wings weren't deep enough to accommodate modern apartments. If the interior weren't so far gone (and contaminated), the pro formas might have penciled out with weird sizes and a reduced unit count. But factoring in the huge remediation cost, nothing worked.

Hey my first post in the OT board since the conversion. Bee's sent me the link and permissions

I'll likely stick to this thread
