Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Is that what its going to look like?

i need to become an architect. I could be a modern day Art Vandelay!

"For my latest design, i have taken the Fairfield Inn, a new build of course, post-2018, and changed not just one, but 1.5 of the colors! Voila!!!"

Based on my experience with architectural renderings, the finished product will look even worse than that.

learned this recently. Former St. Matthews' Grammar school for sale. Have some great memories there. As my child grew up and went to a Catholic school for a time, I started to really appreciate the layout of this school with the gym built as an extension and easily closed off from the rest of the school if needed.

I'm a St. Matt's alum. I sent this listing to my siblings last week asking them if they wanted to go in on it. Great memories there.

We could play some pickup basketball. Maybe even have a semi-formal dance in the gym on Friday night, just like the old days.
Are you old enough to recall the "dances" each week in the summer? Basically, a rock band each week (I am thinking Thursdays or maybe Friday but could be wrong) and no one actually danced. Bands like Todd Hobin, 805, Alec Starr and I am sure many others.

That was before my time, I think. I was there K-6 from 1989 to 1996.

Ah, talked to the listing broker a couple weeks ago about St. Matt's coming onto the market. It's been a busy decade for these institutional properties. Always sad to me.

Yep, especially sad when it's a place that you spent so much time in. Hopefully it can be turned into apartments/condos so that it doesn't lose much of it's character. So many childhood memories there. I can literally close my eyes and visualize walking into school on my first day of Kindergarten. :(

Me too. I ran away on my second day. Got in class, didn't want to stay so I bolted. The nun teacher got my brother in 7th grade to chase me down Heman street and bring me back.

Aquarium approved today. Not sure how I feel about it, on the one hand I think it will be great once it's complete. On the other hand I would have rather seen those millions spent cleaning up N. Salina and Wolf St. to connect the ball park to the inner harbor. Maybe the county can do both.

"Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County legislators today voted 9-8 to approve paying $85 million to build a 600,000-gallon aquarium at the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

The vote is a victory for County Executive Ryan McMahon, who has pushed for the aquarium for the past 10 months, arguing that it will increase tourism and kick-start development at the Inner Harbor.

Legislators cast their votes after nearly two hours of emotional comments and debate. At least eight community members who opposed the project lambasted lawmakers before the vote, accusing them of supporting a costly project that ignores the needs of poor local residents. One resident spoke in favor of the project, saying it would increase tourism."

Tax & Spend republicans ... They just can't help themselves. This is one of those things that that's going to be derelict in 15 years and get sold for pennies on the dollar when busloads of tourists surprisingly aren't flocking to an aquarium in Rust-Belt Syracuse 300 miles from the nearest ocean. The vast majority of people don't go to Boston to see the aquarium, they go to the aquarium because its in Boston.

I think it’ll do fine as a regional attraction. That being said, it probably won’t de well enough to justify the $85M cost, which will probably balloon to $100M+ and I’m not even sure what’s in that number. Is it just for construction of the facility? What about marine life purchases? Annual upkeep? Who is going to maintain it? The county? Will a non-profit be needed to help with costs, like the zoo?

I’ve been fairly ambivalent about this project because of this. It’ll be great to add some positive development to the inner harbor area and I do think it will be a nice asset in the city, but is it really worth the investment when there are dozens of other things that could probably be done with that money? One thing I will say is at least that money is being invested in the city and not in say, Clay.

Excellent bands. I think Todd Hobin is still active.

A friend of mine that has grandchildren is looking forward to it. She got sick of taking the kids to the zoo all the time.
