Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

My family and I have stood in front of this decrepit building for the St. Patrick's Day parade for decades. Amazing what it looks like now, and with the Salt City Market going in next door, that corner will look very different for future parades!

Also good things: commercial space on the South Clinton side (it's been occupied for at least a couple months) to activate a pretty ugly block, plus smaller units at (slightly) lower prices.

For our Rochester friends. The original FLX Wienery is located behind a farm that has been in my family for 160 years. Needless to say, I've hit it up a number of times since they opened. One of my favorite places to go in the Finger Lakes.

That place is an absolute gem- my wife and I used to hit the Wienery up for lunch when we would head down to Seneca Lake for some wine tasting. Hard to describe to folks who haven't been there- unbelievable food in a casual atmosphere.

Absolutely. They also run one of the best restaurants in Upstate New York - FLX Table. The Owner and Executive Chef, Christopher Bates, is one of less than 300 certified Master Sommeliers in the entire world. On top of that, he and his wife are just genuinely nice people.

Very cool, just discovered this place this summer. It's awesome - kimchi hot dogs and Pappy Van Winkle...how do you beat that?

And if wine is your thing, they always have a diverse selection of bottles to buy, including some really rare ones.

This will be good for them & good for the area they're in. Their beer is pretty good, but nothing special in an area loaded with great breweries, so I'm glad they're stepping up their game in other ways.

Ellicottville Brewing Co.’s decision to acquire the Empire Brewing Co. brand is rooted in a decision to help the Little Valley-based craft brewer expand its footprint across the state and into the lucrative New York City market.

EBC bought Empire’s trademark and intellectual property after the Syracuse-headquartered craft brewer shut down it operations this past fall. Terms were not disclosed.

“We have a strong following into the Syracuse market, but this now takes us into New York City,” said Peter Kreinheder, EBC president and founder. “This deal moves us in a new direction.”

Empire had a loyal customer base extending from Central New York into Manhattan.

Kreinheder expects EBC’s annual production to increase by at least 30 percent because of the Empire deal.

EBC has an average annual output of 14,000 barrels of its various craft beers. The Empire deal will see that yearly production increase by as many as 5,000 barrels, Kreinheder said.

EBC, by early April, hopes to roll out cans of such Empire branded craft beers as Black Magic Nitro Stout, Skinny Atlas Light and Local Grind. It is adding a New York State of Mind, New England-style IPA, under the Empire brand this spring.

From Buffalo Business First. I can't post the link, as it's a subscriber-only article, so I posted an excerpt.

Not sure how many here are familiar with Ellicottville, but it's a really cool ski town about an hour south of Buffalo. EBC has great beer, too.

Not a skier, but I've been to Ellicottville a number of times. Really cool little town. EBC is definitely a good brewery. Worth a visit if anyone is in the area. Great that they are keeping the Empire brand around.

That's great news. My family used to have a house in Ellicottville that we'd used for skiing/snowboarding/tubing. And yes EBC is a good beer and popular in the Buffalo area. Great to see them buy up the Empire brand.

My father-in-law owned a nice chalet on HoliMont Ski Resort in Ellicottville when my wife was a kid. They used to spend all day on those slopes, from what I hear.

Holimont was where our place was as well, really nice private ski resort. Holiday Valley is on the other side of the hill and is very popular too

Very nice! They were at 20 Holimont Ave. Pretty sure they still keep in touch with a couple of their former neighbors.

I was not a big fan of their beers and only ate there once. I'll take World of Beer over this place any day of the week

The Gordon Biersch brewpub at Destiny USA has closed

SYRACUSE, NY -- The Gordon Biersch Restaurant Brewery in Destiny USA closed today, joining a growing list of locations the national chain has been shutting down across the country.

The brewpub -- a restaurant with an attached brewhouse -- opened in the Syracuse mall in 2012 and occupied a space on the first level, near the Hiawatha Street entrance.

Destiny USA marketing director Nikita Jankowski confirmed the brewpub shut down today.

Return of art deco Rainbow Lounge on tap for former Hotel Syracuse

"SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The art deco-style Rainbow Lounge will make its return to the Marriott Syracuse Downtown later this year, the third and final restaurant at the resurrected former Hotel Syracuse.

Hotel owner Ed Riley said he expects the lounge, which is coming back as an upscale steakhouse, to open around September or October in the same first-floor space where the original Rainbow Lounge opened on April 8, 1937.

The new Rainbow Lounge will be a replica of the original, which boasted a streamlined art deco design with a circular bar, glass-block windows and entrance, terrazzo floor and multi-colored lights that gave it its name. "

Saw this post on Facebook and figured it was worth sharing. Interesting conceptual renderings of a redeveloped 15th Ward (better known by many as the former Kennedy Square land, site of two failed/corrupt COR projects with the state - a proposed redevelopment project with SUNY Upstate and a proposed new county/city/SU shared stadium). It's a thesis project for an SU architecture student, and he provided a Zoom link for his presentation in May.
