I don't think the Syracuse economy is in a position to be selective like that, especially when it comes to the vitality of its downtown area.

Wonder how this will go over with the NIMBY's in the area. It is a shame that no one could revive that course, however.

Honestly just have to look at the developer to predict that this is 99.9% not going anywhere.

It's a shame a golf course can't make a go of it there. Such a great location.

It's also a shame our county and the surrounding towns are run by provincial hicks who can't master the concept of planning, because there's a lot of development in that immediate area but no synergy and too little infrastructure to support it.

Yeah, leery of the project but will still hold out hope. And you're right about the lack of development planning in the urban sprawl around Syracuse. There have been a bunch of new housing developments in Jamesville, yet the village center of Jamesville is mostly a dump with no development plan. It's a shame.

I moved to Syracuse for my first job out of graduate school in '81 and lived here through '86. I had a great experience in Syracuse. Made friends I still have. Had a very good social life.

The development around the Armory was just getting going. The downtown was dead on weekends. The mall had yet to be built.

With all due respect to the guy, he saw the light on the viaduct - he supported removal.

Now, why I prefaced the post this way...wow. Hilarious how Driscoll keeps moving up the ladder. At the EFC his subordinates had to do his work because he couldn't. So he got promoted to get him out of their hair. With the news that he's moving on from NYSDOT and his chief of staff is taking over, I have no doubt that the same thing happened. She's been doing his job and he's being moved to a safer spot. Driscoll is the luckiest guy with the best rolodex around. Without fail, everyone who works with him says he's completely incompetent.

It's like the Seinfeld where Elaine has to promote the crazy mercenary dude who's making everyone uncomfortable...from the mailroom to head of corporate development in a week.

The link says a minimum of 4000 patrons. I am going to assume the maximum is going to be only slightly more.

There are many problems with the War Memorial but the biggest are seating capacity and the lack of private boxes. I don't see this facility addressing either of these problems and the relatively bad location makes it even harder to see a hockey team moving here.

Isn't the state already committed to building a new facility for hosting horse shows at the fairgrounds? That was, I believe, supposed to hold around 2000 people. The county already has a facility at OCC that is a direct competitor to the county convention center next to the War Memorial. And now the state is going to build another competing facility at the fairgrounds?

And there remains a need to build a 10-15K facility to host hockey, concerts requiring > 5 k not held during the summer, etc. remains.

Has an area ever spent so much money so unwisely as CNY? Unbelievable.

Mostly agree, but this isn't CNY spending. This is state spending and I don't know who in CNY, if anyone, is advocating for yet another facility like this.

The War Memorial is a county facility that should have been leveled decades ago but the local veterans protested and the politicians didn't want to lose their voting base. That is the only reason why it's still there, and my Dad's name is etched in the wall. I still believe it's the biggest boondoggle in the city, of which by the way has no control over

Agreed. Lots of awful decisions have been made over many years. Lots of people are to blame. Ugh. It makes me sick to think of all the money that has been wasted...
