Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Check out what Rick Destito is doing, one building at a time, in the West Fayette corridor. It'll get there.

He renovated my father-in-law’s former family home, for his own family to live in. Rick is a special guy , he had the entire family over to take pictures and to see the wonderful job he did.

I'm fairly certain that a large majority of the building is occupied. The city school district has a good-sized presence there through their professional development center, which I'm pretty sure is in the west wing. Oneida Air Systems' headquarters is there. Usherwood Office Technology's headquarters is there. Urban Life Crossfit is one of the ground floor tenants. I believe there are also a few non-profits and smaller businesses located there as well.

I wish that Hand Prints Irish store was still there. I loved that place. The owners retired and closed up shop a few years back, I believe.

I worked in that building my first job after college, for Rockwell International (who bought out Porter Cable) as a cost accountant. It was a huge mfg facility that sadly was purchased by Rockwell with the intention of eliminating a competitor and buying their name brand (Porter Cable). They moved into a brand new facility in Jackson, Tennessee that totally flopped and Rockwell selling the name to Pentair within 5 years of moving it from Syracuse. I think Black and Decker now owns the Porter Cable brand. So sad. There was an employee’s bar on the top floor, with a bowling alley, pool tables etc.

Was happy to see this from her today. Waiting on Senator Schumer to stop waiting on the sidelines and throw in his support.

yeah right

That's very cool to get a piece of family history restored on what had become a rough block. It's not easy, but we're lucky that there are people like Rick out there.

After nearly 40 years in business, downtown Syracuse's only pharmacy to close

Not the greatest news, but a seemingly perfect opportunity for Wegmans to debut a new urban grocery store concept, right?

That's weird; Walgreens already applied to change the signage and I believe it's been installed. Wonder what happened.

If they can't be convinced to stay, I hope they sell. It's my understanding that a Rite Aid -affiliated entity has owned the building itself for decades. They did some facade work a few years ago but mostly they've let the building sit there with the top three floors vacant. This will be a very attractive redevelopment opportunity on a block that is close to turning the corner.

Yes, that is strange. They are closing 600 stores as a result of the merger. My guess is that they decided that the performance of this store fell within their determining factors of what stores to close across the country.

Anyone know what is under the ugly facade? It is an old building with nice brickwork and ornamental features underneath?

Hmm, as far as I know, the current facade is more or less the original facade (minus the ornamental design on the top that is no longer there/still covered up).

Yep, that corrugated metal on the ground level is covering up some terra cotta and storefront windows, but for the most part it's already exposed.

In other news the airport was ready for a ribbon cutting today... yeeesh. I very recently flew in/out of Hancock and am disappointed. I am all for improving aesthetics, and heaven knows that airport really needed a face-lift to get with the times, but man it seems like a poorly conceived, poorly executed, rush job with no practical or functional improvement to the flying public.

Among my chief complaints, there really isn't anything to do if god forbid your flight is delayed a few hours (and I would know first hand). No business center, or green area to sit and relax in (even in the lobby). Speaking of the lobby, it's dark and uninviting. What's with all the fake rock facade everywhere? Maybe on the 'grand staircase' but it's plastered everywhere in the lobby and is just odd (at least to me). I'd rather have a cool design feature or water feature... but I digress. The painted ceiling which I guess is supposed to tie into the floor color scheme just makes it more dark and closed in feeling. Plus I am literally butt-hurt over the crappy hard seats by the gates. couldn't allocate some of the 63 mill for padded seats? I'll even throw in a couple bonus items: the newly installed signage inside the airport is brutal. Who thought a dark blue background with important info that's not illuminated or bright in any way was smart? It's totally illegible more than 10 feet away. Don't get me started on the craptastic canopy outside, that will be a real treat in the winter, or the still untouched garage. I really don't know how this ran close to 65 million, but someone got a nice payday out of this.

Too bad some of the funds didn't go to functional improvements, or enticing more airlines from Hubs, or getting SW into the area. Don't get me wrong - I fly fairly often- and have seen many airports in big and small markets alike, and while Hancock is way nicer than it was... it could have been even better (a lot better from a practicality standpoint) for the customers flying in and out everyday.

Wait you mean the Governor and his minions rushed another project and did it half arsed? No way. Lipstick on a pig and the posturing and pontificating is absurd. Is it better - for sure, is it good enough. No way.

And this is a main ad for Cuomo. Meh. He’s made the least of the most.

I'm sure it was just a coincidence both Rochester and Syracuse were done just before election day.
