Except that it costs more than the "grid" option and requires more buildings to be razed than the grid option. The writer should not worry... Congel's mall will sink or swim not based on this but on competing with Amazon and finding alternative uses for the mall space.

I like it! Trussle bridge! My least favorite type of bridge, but why not. I can see people driving from miles around to see it and experience it.

Listen, I can fix Syracuse in four easy steps:

One, put the Erie Canal back in - then rebrand as the Amsterdam of Upstate, add more canals later. Stop referring to Syracuse as the "Salt City" and distance yourselves from salt potatoes...nobody likes salt. The tide has turned...diabetes.
Two, light rail! Also, build a wall and keep out the suburban people that hate the environment and make us waste all that money on needless infrastructure to support their awful wasteful lifestyles.
Three, purge.
Four, do that community grid thing, and build more fountains. People like fountains.

Profit.

Why is the bridge a bad idea? 100 feet up seems high enough to remove the visual barrier. Trees and parks underneath sound pretty good (if it happens), especially to include bike lanes. TBH the aesthetics don't look that horrible, at least to an out-of-towner.

takes up a lot of real estate (it's not like you can build anything underneath it or would want to). It's not a lot different than the current 81 in all aspects except the pretty cables and height in the middle.

It would use up a lot of real estate that is being occupied right now. Something that big would require even more condemnation and eminent domain than the earlier proposal from the Congel group, which I believe required 27 properties to be demolished in order to make the turns and width of highway NHTS compliant. This would probably bring that total closer to 40.

But but but traffic on Old Liverpool Road, they'll sputter.

Never mind that they chose to live way up there and rely on cars to access the city with the knowledge that the county and the state have been playing hot potato with this road (with an eye toward shutting it down or reducing lanes) for decades. This lane reduction almost happened five years ago, and I expect it to go through this time. Lipstick on a pig, but probably a functional improvement.

My pipe dream:

1) Reduce lanes through the village;
2) Remove the OLP north of the railroad bridge and create parkland;
3) Enhance Old Liverpool Road with curbs, cycle track, and dedicated bus lane;
4) Enhance OLP south of railroad bridge as a two-lane Park Street extension with a terminus at Old Liverpool Road near former LeMoyne Manor; and
5) Sell residential building lots on the east side of this new Park Street extension, facing the park and the lake, and extend East Shore Recreation Trail along west (lake) side of street.

This would create a continuous stretch of complementary parkland and development between the Regional Market neighborhood and the village of Liverpool, finally embracing the lakefront in a pleasant, people-centric way.

Feldmeier is pretty good at making stainless steel tanks ... beer, well, it's a maturing industry, so good luck to them. That Farm Brewery was always pretty packed. The food wasn't great, but the space is.

Like a lot of similar roads around the country, it was built as a low-speed pleasure route to show off a new park.

Like a lot of similar roads, suburban sprawl led to commuter demand for increased throughput, which created a vicious cycle that prioritized speed at the expense of park viability and, arguably, driver safety.
