Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

A name that I had not heard in years, brought me right back to when it happened when watching This Is Us last night.

"NBC’s “This Is Us” made an emotional return in its season 5 premiere Tuesday, featuring the story of a Syracuse man who was killed by police in Pittsburgh.

...Randall (Sterling K. Brown) having an emotional reaction to the killing of George Floyd and the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests that followed.

Randall then shares the story of Jonny Gamage, a Black man from Syracuse who was killed by police in Pittsburgh 25 years ago, with his daughter’s boyfriend Maliq (Ashante Blackk).

“He was the cousin of Ray Seals. Ray was a former defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Randall says. “Jonny was 31. He was driving home one night in this fancy car. Cops tried to pull him over for an expired registration. He ended up getting pinned down by five of them for resisting arrest. He died right there.”

I believe this is on the site where Country Club/Uncle Sam's formerly stood.

inarchitects does nice work. This will probably be a crappy plaza, but if they're involved with the design I'm sure it'll wind up better than it could have.

Yeah any plaza development is going to be rather uninspiring from an aesthetic point of view, but that corner needs some love. I wonder if it will have the same access issue that ultimately killed the proposed pharmacy on that site.

Looks like it's more than just where Country Club was. It's that entire parcel within Celi Dr.

I LOVE the parking lots fronting the new trail. Really makes that public investment more appealing, IMO.

I'd probably care a little bit more if Erie Boulevard wasn't already one giant, continuous strip mall, full of chain restaurants/stores and more parking spaces than cars in the city.

That layout is pretty disgusting. It's nice to see that Shoppingtown basically puked all of their tenants out onto single use buildings on Erie Blvd. And now we have a giant empty mall - plus acres and acres of parking so people can drive from one shop to the next instead of walking.

Are you telling me you are not pumped to bike down the new path in the middle of Erie? You are going to be missing out on some great views!

in local election news...

"The Syracuse area has six sites because Republican officials in Onondaga County declined to open more last year out of concern for the cost. Democrats sought at least two additional sites. Republicans held the line.

Because a consensus was required to do more, the GOP position was decisive. Adding extra sites would have required agreement between Onondaga County’s two election commissioners, one Republican and one Democrat. That did not happen.

...several Upstate counties opted to create more early voting sites than Onondaga. Compared with four major urban areas outside New York City, the Syracuse area has the fewest locations per voter.

Partisan tension over early voting in Onondaga County has existed for years. It mirrors similar divisions at the state and national level. Typically, Democrats push for measures to expand voting. Typically, Republicans push back."

I don't think the article on Syracuse.com about polling places is a subscriber exclusive, I encourage the local folks to read it. It's interesting how the board of elections is run and how the GOP has worked across the state to try and limit access to voting locations. And in not surprising news the GOP also has been against early voting in NY for years but were forced to do it when the Democrats took over the Senate.

Edit: and the above reference to waiting in line from 15 to 30 minutes on average is just that. They took an average of the wait times across all 6 locations for the 4 days of early voting so far. Some people have been waiting 2 hours in line to vote. This article is a bit enraging to be honest.

No doubt, but we've got to start somewhere. When the State leads with the public investment, local planning/zoning has to follow by holding private property owners' feet to the fire. (I believe this is where DeWitt upzoned to allow five-story mixed-use, but I don't think that type of form/density is required.)

Took me 10-15 mins to vote at the South Ave location. Was fine with it.

Clay is a zoo again today.

I get up early for work and the local polling place is just down the road so I usually vote on Election day between 6 - 6:30 AM, and I'll likely do the same this year. I was near Clay Saturday afternoon. I took a peak at the line, and said forget that.

Sunday was worse than Saturday

Went to our polling place.. first the machine was down,, then they got it started and the printers were out of ink and they couldnt locate any extra cartridges..

Still the 20 people in line were patient and 30 min flew bye.. the advantage of living in the boonies.

It's nicer now, but I liked it when it was an unpretentious blue collar neighborhood bar that would get unbelievably packed on St Patrick's Day. Had to sneak in through the men's room window to get into the place.
