Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

"Syracuse, N.Y. — A New Jersey company that promotes its large, colorful and entertaining high-tech car washes is coming to Syracuse in 2021.

Valet Auto Wash bought the former Babies R Us store at 2027 Park St. for $3.8 million on Sept. 15 and recently began transforming it into a car wash that, at 30,100 square feet, will be twice as large as the Delta Sonic car washes in the Syracuse area."

I've been a couple of times and thought it was the best Mexican restaurant in Syracuse. Obviously, living in Buffalo, I'm not a core customer of theirs, but I know that when I am in town, there's very little chance I will be venturing out to Baldwinsville for dinner. I've heard great things about Angry Garlic and have been meaning to try it for a while, but going out to Bville from the east side is such a chore that I still have yet to go.

Really? I guess growing up in the rural part of the MV taught me that a 20-25 minute drive is nothing. My wife, like a lot of people who grew up here seems to think anything longer further than 5 miles is a long ways.

To each their own, but if it’s not in a 10-15 minute radius, the likelihood of me going there drops significantly. When I lived in the Elmwood Village in Buffalo, I was more likely to walk to a restaurant than get in a car and go somewhere, and that’s the way I liked it.

Heck even when I lived in the city for decades, the multitude of local restaurants in Syracuse required a car ride to get to them. Used to love Tino’s, Danzer’s, Smorals, Twin Trees-Milton Ave, McCarthy’s or Morey’s for fish etc, none were within walking distance from my city homes. In fact they were always a 10-15 minute drive at least and many were more because of lights, stop signs and traffic. Tino’s I could walk to from my part time work as a teenager but even after high school games etc, you needed a car. From my last city home, B’ville is only a 19 minutes drive by car according to google. Nothing is too far by car.

What's he done so far to make you feel that way?
Bringing business and economic incentive back to the west and north side, more so the west. The area around the Axa Towers was/is poised to boom entering 2021 with covid considered. Urban population growth in downtown again leading to a small residential housing/apartment boom. I think there’s a lot to like about him. very excited about the salt city market and businesses coming to the westside of downtown near hotel cuse

I think a lot of that development you're talking about is really more the work of Rob Simpson and CenterState CEO. They are the ones behind almost all of Downtown's (and the North Side's) redevelopment.

I have worked with a lot of those people for years. Ben Walsh didn't do any of that stuff. That whole food market, the redevelopment of Hotel Syracuse, the ICON building, the old Merchants Bank, Original Grain, and that block, the Verizon building - all of that is CenterState, not Ben Walsh. Same thing with the coming redevelopment of the Tech Garden at the AXA Towers. That's CenterState getting those grants from Empire State Development.

Ben Walsh comes from a great political family, but so far the only thing I've seen him do is grandstand about opening businesses back in April, saying the particularly dumb thing that "we've done a lot of testing" as justification for reopening, without regard to the results of the tests.

I have heard that relying on tests that are between 50-70% accurate is very scientific. Any test with that margin of error being counted as scientifically accurate is ridiculousness.

Living on the east side of the city, I never had to go further west than Geddes Street or further north than Grant Blvd to find all the great restaurants that I needed. I'm not saying I never did, but I'd bet that 90% of the time when I went out to eat, it was within those boundaries.

Those boundaries are definitely not within walking distance though. Only recently with increased downtown living around Armory Square or Tipp Hill area’s bar/bar food scenes can count on many walk in customers. Wescott area attracts some neighborhood people to their eateries. I used to live off Geddes St but by car- Westvale, Fairmont, Camillus, Onondaga Hill even B’ville are just as close and quick to get to as Grant Blvd. We are lucky there are many very good restaurants in Syracuse and on the outskirts (sadly many are lured by free and easy parking in the outskirts) and all less than a 20 minute drive for 90% of customers.

It's pretty much universally accepted the the Marriott renovation's public-sector partner was Ben Walsh.

And the mayor did come from Centerstate...

I'm familiar with that East Side bubble for better or worse.

There's a great scene out there, but if it's not a 45-minute walk from my front door, it's like a whole different world. I'll just as soon drive to the Catskills as drive to another Onondaga County restaurant.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying I could walk to those places, I'm just saying that the likelihood of me driving to Baldwinsville from the east side is incredibly low, when I could have my pick of a couple dozen restaurants located within a 10 minute drive that are just as good, if not better, than any restaurant in Baldwinsville (don't mean to pick on Baldwinsville, as they do have some nice restaurants, but that's where this discussion began).

2021 picking up where 2020 left off:

Curious as to what happened with BNY Mellon in Syracuse. It seemed as though they were poised for a major expansion some years back and instead they closed their office downtown and consolidated it with the Dewitt office. Now, they are closing the Dewitt office and consolidating it with their Oriskany office.

I have the inside story as I know a lot of people who work there(I'm a former employee). Oriskany and East Syracuse are basically working at 25-50% capacity due to covid. Because of this they are downsizing their real estate footprint and most people will WFH. If people need to go to the office they will go to Oriskany.

miss going to the mall, by the time this ends what mall will be left.. buying stuff online is just such a pain.

4 stores at Destiny closing within the past two weeks, Best Buy being the biggest one yet. Also Michael's, Clark's, and today Christopher & Banks

World of Beer is back open. I’m in. Going to Lord and Taylor for a bathrobe, and then crushing some beers and mac and cheese bites!

I love World of Beer, whenever I'm in the mall I stop in. I half expect them to move once their lease it up to somewhere more affordable, hopefully Hanover in the old J Ryans spot. Would love to see that happen.
