You drink beer!?? :)

I love World of Beer, whenever I'm in the mall I stop in. I half expect them to move once their lease it up to somewhere more affordable, hopefully Hanover in the old J Ryans spot. Would love to see that happen.

The owner of Water Street Bagels bought J. Ryan's (in addition to half of the blocks around Hanover) not long along; they wanted to add another story to the building and open the first-floor bar along with a roof deck I believe. Obviously this isn't the year for that, but I'd expect something decent to come out of their ownership.

Interesting. Are we talking a roof deck for potential apartment tenants or like a rooftop bar?

I really do love that space, it's the perfect place for a bar. Easy to get to the dome and far enough away from the Clinton Square festivals to hang out and have a few. Imagine how much the view will improve once RT81 comes down

Unfortunately, not much will change with the view from there when 81 comes down. The nearest highway that you can see there is 690 eastbound lanes. Then 81 with 690 westbound lanes on the other side.

interesting, I thought that bridge was part of the viaduct although I'm going by the easy access to 81 from Pearl St. from there. Looking down Erie Blvd towards Dewitt, that bridge is part of 690? My mind's eye is all discombobulated.

We were just talking about this today, coincidentally. There's some misunderstanding about this and obviously nothing's finalized, but as I understand it the southernmost of the double viaduct there in the vicinity of Montgomery/North Warren (690 eastbound today) would be eliminated, pushing the mess farther from downtown. A new viaduct (carrying both directions of 690) would be built roughly where the current 81/690 west viaduct is today (tight up against the former cathedral on North State and the former BHC building at 323 James).

Now what form the new I-81 offramps will take is another story. There's a possibility that North Warren/Oswego Boulevard will be a total traffic sewer, just like Almond Street is today. That'd wreck the vibe over there on the east side of Hanover.

BTW, yes, rooftop bar rather than rooftop for tenants.

That would be ideal, and it would hopefully free up some more real estate for development if they were to do that.

Yeah it's a mess in there, but you can see here in this Google Maps screenshot where everything runs.

what a mess that is, it's inconceivable to me that the people in charge thought this was a great plan at some point. I have to wonder what life would be like in Syracuse if they had not mowed down a good portion of the city for a highway.

Thanks for posting the map, that configuration makes sense now in my brain and I hate it even more

Yeah truly a shame, and it happened in cities all over the country. Here in Buffalo, the Humboldt Parkway - a beautiful tree-lined street that was part of Frederick Law Olmsted's park system design - was destroyed to make way for a depressed, 6-lane highway linking the Thruway to downtown Buffalo. Depressing is a good descriptor as well, as it totally destroyed several predominantly black neighborhoods (hmm, where have we heard that before?)

those photos are stunning

I still feel sad thinking about what they did to James Street in the '60s and '70s. I know a lot of those beautiful old homes and properties had more "practical" uses, but.

A major tragedy. A preservation bright spot here in Buffalo, with many of the old “Millionaire’s Row” mansions on Delaware Ave being spared the wrecking ball that nearly all of the James Street mansions couldn’t avoid. Many have been converted to office space, which definitely could have been done in Syracuse if the people calling the shots had any semblance of foresight.

Destroyed our cities to prop up the suburbs so that white people could get away from the black people that made them feel uncomfortable. So sad.

No, no, no! It was just about getting to the airport quicker! I can see the sign!

Same, it's still a nice street (or could be), especially in the fall, but dear god, it's full up with concrete eyesores and generally just unsightly buildings dotting the landscape now. Brutal.

Pretty cool - reminds me a bit of Chef's Hall in Toronto, but not loving the seating.

Toronto isn't my favorite place on Earth, but they have a couple good markets and set ups like this (obviously plenty of places do, Ottawa's is okay, but doesn't seem to pull people in the way you would hope)

It's a tough balance between Artisanal Food Court vibe and Trendy Food Market
