Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Got Schumer, the NY delegation, and NYS to go all in and now the deal is shifting.

NIMBY’s pushing back, who knows what the long term legal and political risk is in NY.

Less than even money this ever happens.
With balance of power shifting in the county as well, this is a very delicate situation.

If I read correctly one is already under construction there, my assumption is they wanted assurance of another facility built in the US. I hope they share the entire new agreement would be interesting reading.
there’s no reason they’d have to commit to building 2 fabs in Idaho ahead of NY unless there was political pressure to do so.

They don't, I was answering the posters question about why Micron moved some funding from Syracuse to Boise. I don't think the Commerce dept cares one iota where they spend it.
And from a cash flow perspective certainly makes sense to move funds to an in flight project rather than one that hasn’t started yet.

It said they had to agree to build a second one in Boise but it's unclear if it Microns choice to build that before the one in Syracuse. There wasn't any confirmation they had to build those two first versus Microns choice to do so.

because it's all political. not hard to connect the dots -- Commerce has a lot of ability to push things to certain states if they so desire. It usually doesn't happen but we have no rules.
And you won't have the lawsuits holding up the project in Idaho for things like bats. Wouldn't expect more the 1 plant to be built here ever.

They are clearing ground starting next month.
If this project was a priority for national industrial policy, it would be getting done on or ahead of schedule. That it is being treated normal course and speed and then being delayed and funding shifted by choice shows it isn’t.

They are knocking down trees, good for them. They probably have a reserve ready to remediate and return if the plug is pulled.

Not sure how current these prices are, but both Solvay and Skaneateles have municipal utility companies.

Average cost of electricity in Solvay, New York

According to our data, the average electricity rate in Solvay is 5.62 cents per kWh. This equates to an average residential bill of $59.70 per month. Our data also shows the average resident in Solvay uses 1061 kWh per month.

  • Skaneateles residents pay 5.60 cents per kWh, while the average national rate is 16.22 cents
dang that is literally half of what we pay in Iowa and they are wanting to raise rates again.

It’s more than clearing trees. Utilities are starting soon too, but you do you. They also get no money if they do nothing. You have one thing right. It probably isn’t a priority nationally for some folks because of pettiness.

It’s being published November 17th.

The delay in the completion date is just Micron realizing how long these giant Fab projects take to complete. They're behind on the 1st Fab (ID1)in Idaho that's currently under construction. They started site work in 2022 and thought would complete in 2025 and producing in 2026. They're approx 2 years behind schedule on ID1. These projects are massive and extremely complex. Site work start in Dec 2025 in Clay puts completion right around 2030 based on their extended timeline in Idaho. They shifted funding to ID2 as they're hoping to gain some efficiency with having everything to build the 1st Fab already there.

100% this.

Heard from a source that Senator Crapo in Boise (on the Senate Finance Committee) was responsible for steering the 2nd fab to Boise. Regardless if they don't build two fabs in NY they will have to give all 6 billion back, so I think for the long game we're still more likely to see 2 fabs built here than not. Trump's amendment increased Micron's requirement to build 4 fabs over Chips 1.0. This is basically a bigwig Senator using his clout to get a 2nd fab in Idaho versus a 3rd guaranteed in Syracuse (2 and 2 guaranteed instead of 3 and 1). So TLDR this decreases the odds that we'll eventually see a 3rd fab. Then again, demand may continue to outpace production, China may annex Taiwan, etc... so it's impossible to predict where things will stand in 10 years which is probably the earliest we'd be talking about #3 anyway.

The senator sure has an aptly descriptive moniker.
