Diagne

Hopefully the early reports on Lydon are accurate. We need someone to step up and contribute more than expected.

I disagree. Roberson played some at the 5 last year out of necessity and will this year because he's our best rebounder.

Then who replaces him at the 4? Lydon? There literally isn't anyone else.

A front line of 210, 210 and Gbinije playing the 3 [assuming he isn't full time up top] isn't a recipe for success in the zone.

Yes, I think we will see a front court of G, Lydon and Roberson. It's obviously not ideal but Chino...I'll bite my tongue. And Chino may be a little more muscular but he's only 6'7" too.

We were thin, literally and figuratively, before losing Diagne.

Now we're REALLY thin.

Chino might have to play. If there is any way he is going to contribute as a collegian, he'll be given a chance now.

Man, I'd give anything to have him ready to play 5-7 minutes per game without hurting the team. He had one outing like that last year, where we actually built upon a lead despite Rak having to sit major minutes in the first half.

Time to push the baby bird out of the nest.

Love Lydon, by the way. This means more minutes for him, which is a silver lining in an otherwise lousy situation. Maybe this will induce Roberson to step up, too.

We'll need every frontcourt contribution we can get at this point.

Roberson won't see one minute at the 5. He's 6-7.5 and about 210 pounds. That won't work in our system.

And yes, I know that we don't have many [any?] other viable alternatives.

Um, yes - I believe he will see minutes at the 5. Doesn't matter how big he is, he's the best option.

He's going to see a lot of time at the 5 especially if Coleman is hurt or in foul trouble. He's light years better then Chino despite his size. He's the guy JB will trust there when Coleman is out.

Forget the stats--he would have provided us with a legit backup at two positions that we now don't have. That was far more important than any stats he might have contributed.
And that was my original point, saying how he may only chip in 4 and 3 but his most important contributions would have been 5 fouls and a couple blocked shots.

Chino has to work to at least be a threat on offense. When I say that, I mean he has to be able to convert layups or at least finish strong and convert FTs. If Chino can chip in 4 pts that would be big. We can't play 4 on 5 on offense.

Um, I'm not sure that you fully understand the positional defensive responsibilities of the center in our zone. Being relatively short is less important than him weighing only 210 pounds. How the heck is he supposed to anchor position and hold it inside? He's plenty good enough as a rebounder and [I think] a shot blocker. But he's too light to nail that down.

Chino is bigger and stronger. Coming at you, kid.

Bingo. The issue with Chino is that he is so limited offensively he makes Keita look like Bill Walton in his prime.

We'll see.

There is no way whatsoever--none--that Roberson is an ideal fit to man the pivot for even one minute in our defensive system. He's a better player than Chino--no argument there. That doesn't mean that he's a better role player to man that backup center position.

Either way, we're going to know very soon in the season. If they force feed Obokoh an infusion of minutes at backup 5 to get him ready, he'll get the first crack. If they play Roberson there, I'll stand corrected--he'll be the guy.

That's not the issue with Chino. He wouldn't be counted on to score, just to convert what few open opportunities present themselves. Far bigger issues last year were his defensive positioning, his propensity to foul, and his tendency to lose focus with his defensive positioning.

If he could give us 5-7 minutes per game, hold his own in the paint, use his fouls smartly, but never score a bucket in the paint -- I'd be OK with that.

That said, what was the game last year where Rak got in foul trouble and Chino played heavy first half minutes? He held his own in that game. That's what we'd need to see from him this upcoming year. Decent minutes, solid defense.

Did you watch Chino play last year? He's an absolute black hole offensively and outside of one game was nearly as bad defensively. He only played when JB literally had no choice amd even then he rushed Rak back in as soon as possible. 210 or not Roberson will be the guy in any close game.

RF: I'm also hopeful Roberson tips the scales at 220 this year. He looks jacked in the recent pics I've seen. I agree: he's undersized but at least he can rebound. Chino might be able to rebound too, but will he provide a threat on offense? If so, he might not kill us if he's out there for a few minutes.

What ever happened to that 7 ft+ guy...big solid guy who didn't look like he could play basketball? He was around last year, or was it the year before? A walk on.

I've watched Chino play for two full years and seen him in numerous practice settings, unlike many posters. He lacks awareness--that's his problem, because he's fairly new to the game. He scores a bit inside. Not sure what you mean by "black hole" -- that means something else in basketball vernacular that I don't believe you're implying.

But who wants him putting the ball up? He should only shoot on put backs, in transition, and on rare occasions when he's open. You're barking up the wrong tree. The question is: can he fulfill a Keita-like role of being a defensive specialist? That's a valid question.

But, but...he was supposed to land us Bryant.

Now we're paying the price for recruiting another center with little or no skills.

If you read your "if" part of that post on what you would like to see Chino do you will understand why some of us think Roberson will have to be the guy despite it not being ideal. Having to count on Chino to do even half of the things you outlined seems highly unlikely

RF: I think you are referring to the game last year against ND. Chino played pretty well and then got away with a moving pick at the end of the half, setting up a big late basket on a fast break. It was either ND or BC, but I think ND.

If we're resorting to counting on Chino, well, I don't know what to say.

I'm just glad we all enjoyed that great run we had leading up yo last year.
