Did we learn anything today?

What Shrader does is potentially what made Eric effective. The Defensive Coordinator has to account for the QB on every play. With Eric they had to have one player make sure to track Eric. If you didn't he could and did take off.
You had to game plan for Eric, you don't have to do that with Tommy. He is a pocket passer, so you pressure him to get him out of his timing, he doesn't make plays on the run.
Shrader is a Wild Card, and I still go back to the fact that the only successful season under Dino was with a QB that was completely unpredictable from game to game. I don't know if Shrader is that guy, he has the characteristics but is his passing competent enough? I still don't think we have an answer to that. Are the miscues due to rust and development or does he just not have it?

One thing I do know is that Tommy is not a Dungey style QB, that's no knock on Tommy, it's just not his style. And I'm not convinced the pocket passer style is going to be successful when we hit the ACC schedule and start seeing real defenses again.

Well...I learned a lot less than I had hoped, but learned some things that I thought were the case.

1) Damien Alford - glad to see he got some run, was beautiful on the long pass play. I hope we see more of him and he doesn't get shelved once Taj is healthy. I think he brings a lot more to the table than some of our other options. He can run too. Hope we see him as WR #3 going forward.

2) TE's - Well, happy to see we can actually pass to them. Sucks that Benson got hurt so early because he's more experienced than Mang and I think we may have seen a little more activity there. Honestly, if we want to use the TE's more and breakdown of protection/mobility is an issue, that probably bleeds more towards Shrader.

3) Defense - looked strong and competent again. So happy to see that one unit is consistent good. After last season, I don't need great, just consistently good.

4) Specials - this is one weird unit. Last week the kicking game was a mess, this week Trebor Pena had an out of body experience because I'm not sure who that was on the field. Our coverage team has been consistently good for the most part (I missed the 4th quarter so not sure if they had issues then). We have the pieces to have an overall strong unit but consistency is lacking.

5) Sean Tucker - guy is legit and best running back we've had in some time. I'm curious to see how he does against the ACC Defenses and how our line holds up against them as well, but man he is fun to watch so far.

6) QB's - Well, didn't really tell me anything other than Tommy throws a beautiful deep ball when he has time and Shrader is mobile and fairly effective in the short game. It's weird if we could combine our 2 QB's strengths and eliminate both their weaknesses we'd have 1 damn good QB. But yeah unfortunately I think the platoon continues into Liberty.

7) We're sloppy. It's a problem. It's not a one game thing. And the penalties are across all the units, even the defense at times. I don't get it. And unfortunately I feel like it's going to continue.

A lot of what I’ve been thinking and couldn’t articulate well. I don’t know what the answer or let me say, I don’t know that Shrader is the answer. But I do know Devito just isn’t the QB people thought he would be. As Otto I think mentioned, he’s improved moving around etc but that’s against mostly weak competition. He hasn’t proven to be able to do that against ACC opponents. Now, part of that could be the offensive play calling has changed a little to not let him sit in the pocket so long.

But what I see that Shrader does that’s many have noticed Devito doesn’t, is you can see him scanning the field even when he’s under pressure. He’s consistently looking for the open receiver. I know we’ve been told that the play calling doesn’t allow Devito to do this LOL but it’s obvious it’s possible in the offense for a QB to scan the field during a play. I think at this point he’s not in a rhythm yet, we have to remember he’s barely played in his CFB career. He didn’t play at all last year. He did play as a freshman fairly well against SEC opponents and then find ACC competition too much for him LOL. On the flip side, I’m not positive if he is just rusty and trying to do too much to impress, just needs to settle in. Not really sure what we have with him.

Learned that we have 2 average QBs that have very different skill sets. I think Dinos best move is to play both all season. Force the opponent to GP for both.

Learned that Mang is more than a blocker

Learned that JW needs to make sure we never have this Ref crew again. They definitely have it out for Dino.

Learned that Howard should be 2nd RB

Learned that Alford and 25 deserve reps

Learned that Serv needs to stay at center and Davis is a stud

Learned that we have some real talent in our young DL players.

Learned that Lustig is a huge loss.

Learned that 96 needs to head up to SU next year.

Tommy has run the ball really well this year, on purpose and for that reason

Tommy running the ball is not a good option, he almost got injured trying to run out of bounds, against Albany. Doing that against ACC teams would put him on the shelf for the year.
Yeah, I’m glad Dungey was never injured for running the ball

It happens

I get why people want to argue over the two QBs - but I’m still just glad we have options

I felt better about the offensive line before yesterday. Watching Vettorello and Tisdale both get blown up at right tackle multiple times by FCS competition was not comforting.

Not sure why Vet continues to play as much as he does.

Good post. Your point #6 is exactly where I am. At SU, a dual threat QB always seems to give us a better chance of success. It doesn’t require all of the other positions to be as perfect in execution. And I fully expect a dual threat QB to be starting next year. At the same time, I just can’t help but think TD gives us our best chance of winning TODAY. That may change as the season goes on. As you said, if we could blend the two, that would be optimal. The only way to do that is to play them situationally, and that almost always suggests desperation and leads to failure. I don’t know the answer. Fortunately smarter football people than I have to make those decisions.

how do we know they are bad fcs team? they lost to 2 of the top teams in the FCS and we beat them by twice what they did..

Starting to have trouble reading your posts and taking them seriously. It was SUNY Albany. SUNY!!!

N.Dakota St. is better then a lot of FBS teams. Nothing wrong with that post. I don’t think upper deck is telling anyone to pop the champagne corks.

and what does that have to do with being a bad FCS team. Maybe they are bad. But losing to top 5 NDakSt doesnt make them bad nor does losing to RI. Let them lose to other FCS teams and then decide how had they are.

I learned we set a new record for penalty yards in a game.

I also learned the refs were really ticky-tacky on some of those hold calls.

This reminds me of a story. I have a buddy who camps in the area I live. It’s a rural area….. he’s a rural kind of guy too. He has a certain affection for a certain orange guy in politics and loves a good conspiracy theory but doesn’t realize it’s a conspiracy theory.

So here’s the meat of the story. Hopefully someone is still with me here or I’m typing with little fat fingers on a small iPhone which is a pain in the ____.

We’re out on a 4-5 hr bike ride. We’ve passed no less than 20 political signs for someone to be president again, hatred for Cuomo, etc. I’m being conservative with 20. We pass 2 houses right near each other supporting an older gentlemen who some feel is a very sleepy fellow. My buddy turns his head to me and says, “Lot of liberals out your way, crazy”.

You’ve read up to this point and thought this thread was absurdly negative?

I like your friend.

To be fair #96 is not a fcs d.e.

N Dakota st is playing a different level of FB than even Albany. I don’t even know how to explain it any better. It’s SUNY Albany. It’s not even Colgate.

I learned that D. Cooper looked good and took advantage of his opportunities. And, if you're an Albany fan, a Syracuse lacrosse player created a QB controversy.

25 did indeed. We were impressed.

Albany made the 2nd round of the FCS playoffs their last full season . better year then Colgate .
