I think OttoinGrotto and I were the earliest and most persistent voices calling for Dino to be our head coach. I have tried to be positive and supportive since he got here. However, I am really disappointed with his post-game presser and it strains my goodwill.

He was first asked about Cooper Lutz and gushed about his performance. But when asked about JaCobian Morgan, he said, "I'm glad he didn’t fumble the snap. I'm glad it looked like he could throw the football. But again, I wouldn't put too much stock on that - ya know that's the end of the game and we're running out the clock ourselves. Guys were giving him those throws. Pretty sure he didn't get blitzed - I'll go back and check the tape. But that's like throwing 7 on 7 that's not like a real football game. Someone said to me he did what he was supposed to do. If someone was going to play that defense and play that style, you would expect him to go in there and be able to complete a lot of balls and, If I'm not mistaken, he did. I can't remember one hitting the ground if there was any."

He was then asked how far away it was before he could come in to get some experience. He responded with the standard reply that we would have to slim down the offense for him and "all that stuff is down the road."

I can't believe how dismissive he was and if I were his father, I would call it insulating.
I don't care if reserves are in the game because they are playing hard trying to win playing time. Every pass was on target and on time.
AND he was blitzed twice. Once he got it out quickly and on the other he escaped when the pocket collapsed and threw a strike downfield while going to his left on-the-run.

He took what was there and had good vision and poise. His 10-play drive covered 80 yards in 4 minutes and 17 seconds. He completed passes to 6 different receivers.

He deserved encouragement and praise not the dismissive BS Dino threw out there. We were running out the clock ourselves but just happened to throw 7 passes out of 10 plays!! Come on, man.

Our senior starter has completed 46% of his passes with 6 TDs and 7 picks. His QBR against Wake was 5.8. He is getting worse not better. Dino's position strains credulity.

I don't know if he is losing the locker room but he sure as he'll is losing the fan base.

I think people getting angry about Dino's post game comments are mostly just transferring their frustrations from the game and season. Most coaches downplay spot duty by the youngins and while I get that he could have been a bit more tactful, it's coach speak and it's done by coaches all the time.

I understand why some people are needlessly literal, but you get the game. Coaches say what coaches say, they aren't exactly swallowing truth serum before these pressers.
agreed. this is what losing does. We start getting angry at canned responses to press conferences. The thing is people say they want the truth and when the coach says it they don’t like it. What Dino said is 100% true. then when he skirts around the issues people still get mad. That is why I don’t put any stock into it. For all we know Morgan will start Saturday or get significant playing time. What Dino says doesn’t really matter as long as it’s not way out of line or offensive

Of course, I expect coach speak, but that was crap. If you are that young man or in that locker room you expect better. "I'm glad he didn’t fumble the snap. I'm glad it looked like he could throw the football."

agreed and as Syracuse fans we have lived this for basically 20 years in a row

Maybe he is just trying to control expectations. We do have a history with another 7v7 top talent that has proven to struggle outside 7v7 with the very things that DB referenced like blitz recognition, check downs, etc.

That isn't coach speak, that isn't what I want from someone who is charged with molding young men. It was unnecessarily dismissive of a fine effort. He could have just said something positive and left it at that.

That's my point. It was offensive.

Crusty I hear you but this happens everywhere and all the time. Boeheim does it weekly. It's coach speak publicly. My guess would be off camera the coaches and assistants are providing the support, mentoring, everything that you allude to.

Honestly I don't put much stock in comments immediately after a disappointing performance and before he had a chance to review any tape. After the TD Dino had his arm around Jacobian on the sidelines and was clearly showing the love. Yes, he could have been more positive in his comments, but I will let his actions going forward speak louder than his words.

Now, if Morgan is relegagted to mop up duty against BC and does not at the very least get meaningful snaps while the game is still competitive I will do a 180 and wonder What is going on in Dino's mind. I expect a good portion of this week's practice will be to get Jacobian more reps and broaden the percentage of the playbook he is prepared to run.

Wonder how his parents took it.

really? I think you are over reacting. Maybe his parents were annoyed maybe they didn’t even care. Maybe they realize their son has an at an athletic scholarship worth roughly 400K. Or maybe they listen to the coach in their home state of Mississippi and realize Dino is much nicer than Mike Leach. I also believe we were his only P5 but he can always transfer if he feels offended

This isn’t exactly true regarding the response to his presser being about losing

This board gets irate at JAB When he tosses kids under the bus (often dismissive of good performances too)

The only difference between JAB and DFB is that JAB built this GD program over half a century and has more championships of a variety of types than Dino does seasons coached as a HC

thing is, our offense has sucked. Adjust so the guy with an arm can play.
Exactly. Stop thinking your “system” is good. It’s not good. Eric dungey was good. Your system clearly stinks. Let the player play and build around him like every other great offensive school has done

I just checked Gilberts resume for the first time. The dude has only been at a school for 1 year each stop for the past 6 schools. He hasn't been anywhere long enough to leave a fingerprint on a program. Not sure he is able to build a system around players.

Guess we will have our answer in a week. I would bet a lot that Rex starts and won't be pulled until the game is out of hand. We'll see.

My guess is Rex starts, Jacobian gets a couple of series in the second quarter and the better QB gets the bulk of the activity in the second half for as long as the game stays relatively competitive.

Truthfully, his presser comments are the least alarming thing to me, but his comments "we're running out the clock" tells me a lot about where his head is at. It seems instead of thinking of how can we make the best of the situation and get better and get young guys experience, it's more like how can I end this game and consequently this season.

We won’t see Morgan in the first half. Dino will say it’s cause he feels rex gives us the best chance to win

The "running out the clock" line bothers me, too. I can understand a coach saying "we're using this weird year to build/improve skills/experiment." I understand the year being "off" for a number of reasons, and I understand approaching it in a way that's materially different than other years. I get not getting too caught up in the win-loss record THIS YEAR (although losing to Liberty is inexcusable, and I'm not in love with losing badly to Wake).

In my head, though, virtually every second of every game is still a valuable learning experience - either for the players or for the coaches. Winding down the clock isn't the answer - even if you look at these games as scrimmages. If nothing else, and I think that there is a lot else, I think winding down the clock sends the wrong message to the players. They should hear something along the lines of "never stop giving it your all," and "always play through the whistle," not "run down the clock and we'll regroup for next week." IMHO, that perception gap speaks to a losing mentality vs. a winning mentality.

Well said, Crusty. I feel similarly. I want Dino to succeed, and this is an exceptional year, so it's hard to decide what is fair to judge him on. Given the injuries and the weirdness of the year, I'm ok giving him a pass on W-L record. But where I do expect him to shine is with the press, building up the fan base, and developing players. By default, pretty much everyone on defense is getting a chance to play some snaps, so succeeding there for him is a given. With the press and building up the fan base though... we need some excitement. That's going to come by selling the future. Morgan's play gave him a golden opportunity to do that, and he wasted it.

That kind of headiness with the press is normally a small part of the job, but in a season where I am giving a full pass on wins and losses, it becomes a huge part of the job.

The only thing that bothers me about Dino is how he acts like his offense is so complex that a true freshman couldn’t possibly understand it to use all the plays in his “arsenal” then every single saturday we see the same exact things we’ve seen for the better part of 2 seasons which is quite literally the opposite of an arsenal. we run about 5 total plays. stop acting like your offense is on par with something the Andy Reid’s and Sean McVay’s of the world draw up, if that was the case we wouldn’t be sitting at 1-6. play your freshman quarterback the rest of the way.
