DO article on NJ recruiting

It’s not just New Jersey. Pennsylvania is a bigger issue than NJ IMO. We only have three scholarship players on the roster from Pennsylvania.
There is no substitute for hard work and relationships

Losing teams struggle in recruiting. Is that really new information to people? I think the writer is taking advantage of SU's lack of success and making it seem like its due to bad efforts in recruiting NJ. We struggle in recruiting in every state. Its not just in NJ and its not because of lack of effort. There are people that are pissed off every year. Mad because their instate school didnt show enough interest or didnt offer.
Do you believe Dino puts enough of his time and effort into recruiting?

Yes I do. Ive had these conversations. Would have drove to Turningstone today to talk to him after his session but the storm hit. Well anyways, I think the losing makes people try to find the reasons for it. His efforts in recruiting is not one of them. Its on field results that's holding Dino back. If he at least had 6 or 7 win seasons the last few years recruiting would look a lot different.

I think a lot of you guys are missing the point of this article.

At no point does it say that we ARENT recruiting New Jersey…it says that we say we have priority in New Jersey but the actions of the coaching staff don’t demonstrate that we have priority in NJ.

The most damning part of this article is the fact that Dino hasn’t even met a lot of the coaches. This actually makes sense…look at all the studs we have brought in on defense….Monroe is a defensive guy…however, we have to remember Monroe can’t recruit the entire 50 states. We need someone else on this staff to step up and be an ace recruiter like Monroe

I know that this article touched a lot of nerves and that’s why many of you are discrediting it. But this is stuff we’ve all heard through the grapevine about Dino and his recruiting….

Hopefully Anae and Beck pick up where Dino has been faltering in NY/NJ/PA.

We can write a book about the amount of disgruntled coaches in each state that feel a certain way. People just like to single out the losing teams. You can't recruit everyone and when you dont people start to feel a certain way about it. Coaches/trainers/7v7 coaches get upset when they feel like coaches havent made enough contact or didnt show enough love during the recruitiment process. Some want to use offers as leverage so they can get recruited by the blue bloods. Its a big game and you only hear stories from the HS coaches. Every HS coach I talk to feel like their players should be recruited. ( Including me at times lol ) but some of them are delusional. Do these HS coaches reciprocate the same interest after their players get offers from more successful/prominent programs?

No and that article points to a bigger problem
When it comes to our program. Dino needs to make New Jersey a priority and he hasn’t

How do you think Dino is suppose to meet all the coaches in NJ? If he speaks at a camp or coaching clinic in NJ he would have contact with many of them. He definitely cant visit every school. For example schiano can't visit every coach in NYS but he is at turningstone this week to speak.

Why do you think he doesnt make it a priority? Just from this article? There is contacts and offers given out to lots of prospects in NJ. We have players from NJ on the team and had a 3 year starter at QB from there.

Maybe I've missed it but I don't see Head Coaches out on the road recruiting that often. It usually seems to be the position coaches that do the majority of the recruiting.

I will say, I find this article irresponsible for the DO

They shouldn’t be criticizing the head coach and creating negative press

Thank you and that is great to hear. I think that if Dino continues to surround himself with great coaches
AND delegates to them he will be successful.

Looks like a very interesting list of speakers.

Fair criticism should be allowed, but simply based on our NJ recruits compared to other years (earlier in the thread) this staff is doing better than Cuse has in a decade plus.

I agree that Dino needs to show his face around town and not just in commercials. A visit to some local high schools would make the news.

This off-season has been amazing for how poorly the season ended. Some community engagement would be the icing on the cake.

Exactly.

I certainly don’t expect him to meet every coach…that’s obviously unreasonable.

I know you’re closely connected but I’ve heard stories like this about Dino before and not getting out to high schools etc

I mean he hardly makes appearances in CNY

All I’m saying is, if we’re going to prioritize NJ like we say are we than we actually need to do it.

Otherwise we are just blowing smoke
Im not defending him. Ive heard stories too. They can all do better but we have to keep in mind that their job is harder than most. I voice my criticism whenever I can. At the same time we are not on the road with them listening to conversations they have with coaches. We only hear the stories people tell. Dino definitely can appear more in NYS. It will benefit him but will the top NYS kids start coming to SU because of it? Or will they continue to chase blue bloods? One example, Marrone was very engage in NY and Jarron Jones didnt have one thought of attending SU.

My biggest criticism with in state recruiting is the relationship they have with E Hall. I think there should be a bigger emphasis there. The school will continue to produce top end talent for years to come. I think the staff does the best they can do in NJ. You cant put all your resources there and miss out on kids from other states. Teams like Pitt BC Maryland UVA and rutgers are grabbing mid tier kids also. How many NJ kids do you expect SU to land each year?

Dont get me wrong. There should be frustration on our part. The staff have to do better despite the challenges. I don't like to hear those type of recruiting stories. Every staff has them but it causes more damage to SU. It hurts their recruiting efforts in NJ. It just feels like the article was put out there purposely to prevent any momentum in that state.

The Daily Orange is an independent, nonprofit newspaper published in Syracuse, New York. The paper was first published in 1903 and went independent in 1971. The editorial content of The D.O. is entirely run by Syracuse University students, with no oversight from the university. The D.O. receives no funding from SU, relying instead on advertising revenue and donations.

So basically they can say anything they want...within reason.

Any rutgers graduates on their staff? lol

I’ve always advocated going where the talent is and especially with our conference footprint we should be hammering Georgia Florida and the Carolinas totally agree with that, but New Jersey Philly Pennsylvania VA Maryland these places have a lot of talent and they’re drivable. Pasqualoni was not wrong when he used to talk about that five hour driving radius.

Our staff should be hitting every single one of these high schools on their off days. A week or two back people were giving me crap about the coaches needing a vacation, give me a break, these guys make 100s of thousands. Get in the car, get on the road, and go visit the Philly Catholic schools and stop in Harrisburg and Scranton on the way through.
Come on. If you've ever spent any appreciable time on i81 in PA, you would know these guys would need some vacation time afterwards.

I have zero problem with either if the reporting is well researched from all the angles.

When I can disprove the smoking gun recruit that’s the lead in for the article in about 5 minutes, that’s a major problem. That gives me the impression that the writer is either slanted or just plain lazy. So why should I take as gospel anything else he writes?

As I putting my analysis together, Erasmus Hall is by far the number one producer of P5 talent in the state. I think the challenge with NYC though is that geographically it’s located closer drive time to other P5’s and generally speaking cultural wise it might as well be on the moon. Some kids have that home state affinity but a lot don’t, it’s more important about proximity to the city if they’re staying local. Rutgers has a huge advantage there and that’s why Schiano had a lot of success recruiting the city with a struggling program.

The J-students at the D.O. all have sugar plums dancing in their heads with visions of becoming the next Woodward or Bernstein. :p
