Duke Postgame Thread

I’m gonna guess that Duke’s defensive approach in the second half was simply to make SU work and not give up any quick scores. And we didn’t even score at all. To me that yardage is utterly meaningless.

Collins seems like a nice guy, but he’s a terrible QB. Over a year at SU, plus a year at LSU, and he looked flat out unprepared and inaccurate.

OK, I see your point. But it was only his first start. I think next week says a lot.
He might be solid, or he might mess his pants again.

Yeah he’ll get many more starts, IMHO. I can’t see Fran going to the frosh.

So that’s 1 post about how Rickie got “better” even though it was against the second string defense. I had my bet at 15 posts so that’s a good sign

Well, he could have failed to execute. I've played on teams that got their butts beat badly. At a certain point, if you can settle the game down and execute, even if it's garbage time, you feel a lot better about yourself afterwards. You realize that if you don't make those soul crushing mistakes and play with emotion, you can compete. That's important after a beat down.

Listening to Fran’s post game presser I really hate the idea of “everything happens for a reason.” I know it’s a common saying for religious folk, but it feels like a cop out at times when it comes to roles like head Coach

I couldn’t agree more on this/your sentiment. The “everything happens for a reason” yada yada yada is such a broad brush, etc. Now, how it applies relative to this game, in this moment has EVERYTHING to do with the role you voluntarily played in it!

We would’ve lost this game even with Angeli. The defense is a joke
I don't think so. The offense handed them points and gave them extra possessions. Rickie hung Cook out to dry on the play where he fumbled and the one that hobbled him in the first half. With Angeli we score more and keep theor offense off the field. It would've been a close game.

If we fall apart, there is every chance that Rickie could get hurt, too. Guys can't just take 40-50 sacks over the rest of the season; they will be injuries and those guys will be forced into action. He has to be competent, or you have to play the next guy. You can't have guys back there who are so ineffective that they might get hurt.

That was the first time he ever started in his college career.
Even Troy Nunes led us to 3 winning seasons out of four.
I believe that Collins is more talented than Nunes, and about 10 other QBs who have played for us this century.
Nunes scrambling abilities & his grit alone gives us a better chance in this game.

Unless Angeli transfers(I don’t think he will) he is our starter next year. So, what’s the point in keeping Rickie as the starter this year if he sucks next week too? I know Carney is a true freshman but can he look worse? The D just blows, I don’t know how we find 3 more wins without great QB play.
Similar to how Angeli was licking his chops to play at ND, I bet carney would love to play in his home state. If things get ugly I think Fran needs to pull the plug

well if he couldn’t execute against the second stringers and walk ons then he shouldn’t be in Division 1, let alone starting. Giving the ole college try doesn’t work when you’re getting a pay check

I would rather invest in developing Carney this year than flounder through the rest of the season with Rickie. He's horrible, he couldn't read the defense for anything and his scrambles looked rough.

I dont know what to do on defense. Feels like such a big step back from last week.
Same here. I think we all knew beforehand that Rickie isn't the long-term option. From what is known and seen, Carney can play. Dungey excelled as a freshman. I'm sure he knows the playbook. Worst you can do is put him in and find out. Maybe we find a QB for the next 3 years? Maybe he craps the bed? What's it matter at this point. Then you just go back to Rickie.

Frustrating. I’d guess the kids never moved past Clemson, but I am not in the building.

What I know is that they did not show up to play today. No strain. Precious little physicality. No mental focus. They got punked (by Duke!) and backed away. Disappointing.

And the players “no show” is on the coaches, with Fran being front and center. He’s gotta be better. He usually is, but today (this week) he was adrift.

Such a simpleton take that this is on Collins. He was under fire most of the day. The OL was AWOL. And his early INT was a tipped ball. The game was moving a bit fast for him early, he will learn and improve. I actually liked what I saw when he had some time to pass.

Everyone on ERob … the worst unit on the team was the defensive line. My a mile. ERob had no chance no matter how good or bad his calls were. When you lose 38-3, it’s not about the play calls it how often he called a blitz.

Fran pushed all the wrong buttons. It happens.
Next week will be fascinating.

Our running scheme is a lot like Dino’s. Too many vanilla inside runs, hoping to bust it. Not sure we have much else in the playbook since we haven’t seen it thus far.

Willis only had 11 carries. He was averaging around 7 yards per carry before the last few carries. Nixon should have let him loose. Throw in a play action pass or slants to mix it up. I saw minimal action for Vilardi. He could have been great for a few 6-7 yard throws. The play calling was bad. Collins was bad, but Nixon should have made it easier for him.

That game was terrible to watch horrible in every aspect. The only good thing is if this is the team we have it will be a lot easier to get food and drinks the next game because there will only be half as many people there.

Something I said to my Dad today I will repeat here… Syracuse QBs have to be able to do 1 of 2 things (or both) to be successful. 1) Be very calm under pressure and be able to get the ball out quickly. 2) Be able to scramble, throw on the run & improvise. McCord and Angeli can get it out quick and are calm. Dungey & Shrader could improvise, scramble, etc. Devito struggled with the pressure… clearly was a good qb… but not for Syracuse… Rickie doesn’t seem to do either… at least not as of yet
