Duke Postgame

Tremendous respect for the way Kyle plays.

Huge onions. Absolute warrior.

Just hard to win 1 vs 5 as he appeared to be playing at times tonight.

Did Kyle foul out or did he just hit Level 6 and we decided to rest him most of the 2nd half?

Or were we just saving him from the embarrassment of being out there?

The starters kept it close for the first 12 minutes. Everyone was too timid on offense at the start, except JJ, who got our first 5, or maybe our first 7 points. But then nobody else was brave enough to try to score, and so he had to take 2 or 3 shots at the end of the clock, which predictably were misses.

Donnie settled for 3's all game long (until it was no longer 'a game'), because they were simply too big for him inside, and he got intimidated. Period. He only took 4 shots in the whole first half, and I'm pretty sure all of them were threes.

George avoided turnovers for most of the first half, but he clearly felt the ball pressure from Duke's bigger athletes. He couldn't really get us into any offense. (Eventually, he gave up 4 TO's, most of which came early in the 2nd half, when they blew it out.)

When the starters came out at the 12 minute mark of the 1st half, they were down 2, I believe. When the "Second Line" (Soare, Betsey, Sadiq and Kiyan) game in, Duke outscored us 14-3 in 4 minutes, and then the starters were back in.

The starters got it down to 5 with about 3 minutes to go in the first half, but we couldn't get good shots, and we couldn't stop them from scoring inside.

Our two "big men" look like SFs next to the Duke players.

Kingz took a while to get going, but he gave us his best to try to keep us in the game.
Kyle was a beast, and has so much heart.

But we just couldn't defend. Nobody had the courage to try to score, except JJ, Kyle, Kingz, and in moments George did score.

But man, Donnie is too soft. He's a SF. That was a physical game. We held our own early. Kyle had a couple blocks and we did pretty well on the defensive boards in the first 10 minutes.

But Donnie played the whole game - and didn't get to the foul line ONCE. Not ONCE. That's soft.

Kyle is great, but we need a 240 pound guy to guard the low post. I thought we got that in Cheffy Diawara (sp), but he hasn't played at all.

If you're going to build a roster, you are not going to compete at the top table without some size on interior defense. I said this in the preseason, and many of you said, "That's not the game, anymore. Teams don't need dominant big men. Guards dominate the game today."

The North Carolina and Duke games disagree with you.

If somehow, we could keep most of this roster together under a new coach, I still think there is a bunch of talent in this group.

For those of you saying this was a national embarrassment... it wasn't. Dook was EXPECTED to crush SU.

The bigger, underlying embarrassment is that SU is irrelevant nationally.

In a way, that's what gives them "cover" for waiting til the end of the season to get rid of Red.

Red is bold. He's always thinking out of the box. Most coaches wouldn't toss out such a random assortment of players in a game like that.

I'm watching Houston vs Iowa State right now, and neither coach has the balls to try it.

GO RED!!!!

I would imagine Red saw what happened last game when he played Kiyan big minutes, and JJ none in the second half, and thought to himself, "huh, when I try something, sometimes it works. I'm going to try something else." I think that's as far as his coaching strategy extends.

To anyone expressing the opinion that it isn't as simple as hiring a quality coach who can implement good systems on both sides of the ball, and find system fits without breaking the bank -- yeah, it actually is that simple.

Miami (Oh) is in the top 25. Remind me again:

  • What is their NIL budget?
  • How much did they spend on transfers this past off-season?
  • How many 4- and 5- stars do they have on their roster?
  • What facilities do they have that offer competitive advantage?

Yeah, it IS that simple.

Especially when we just want to see competent and competitive basketball.

No one thinks we can mimic Duke or the top tier teams.

But to expect to be top 25 or even ORV and make the tournament relatively safely most years is what we should demand.

I know it’s a rhetorical question, but for the record believe he had 3 PF.

We literally run a three man weave for 38 min per game. Then bail out a ball handler with our center that cannot shoot outside of 2 feet at the 3 point line. Over and over. Anyone notice duke set the high ball screen for a guard and then throw to said guard???
Duke screens happen literally at the top of the 3 point arc, solid body on body screens that actually create separation. Cuse runs them 40 feet away. Dont even touch the guy and then continue to do it over and over. Fundamentals with this team are not a thing and we know who to blame

JB screened the same way. The bigs just stand there and never put a body on anyone. They just run around each other. We need bigger and more physical players and someone to teach fundamentals.

Speaking about screens, are our coaches unable to explain to the players what they are supposed to do on screens?

I've never seen a team so confused on how to handle screens. You'll have two people refusing to switch, 2 people switching...lots of people on Duke open as a result.

Very sad what has become of this program. I turned off the game at halftime after the run we gave up to end the half. Knew it was over then.

If most fans are like me they’ll find other hobbies and be less engaged until the program shows that they’re serious.

Since last year I’ve started snowboarding, in my mid thirties, to have something to do in the winter. I figured breaking bones was more fun than watching this program.

You should expect it actually. That’s what this program did for many years

Adding to it. Every team we’ve played runs MULTIPLE actions at the same time. One guy screens the ball while there’s an off ball screen on the wing, Somebody’s cutting through the lane to the other side, DHO’s with baseline screens, you name it. Multiple actions while we settle for high PnR’s and hope for a drive or kick

JJ made a three to make it 5-3 Cuse at 18:19 of 1H.

His next points were from another three at 14:56 of 2H. By this point Duke had the game in hand.

He finished with 13 FGAs and 9 total points.

He did have four assists.

He got wrecked on D just like everyone else did.

He wasn’t a hero tonight. Same dude. Different day.

13 FGAs were tied for the most FGAs taken in the game, with Evans of Duke. JJ had 9 points as mentioned. Evans had 21.

Opposing teams have analytics and scouting in spades. JJ’s volume shooting is a gift to them.

Does it seem like JJ has removed what little arc he had left on his three point shot?

It's impressive that the dude can shoot 20% from three when the ball is as close to a line drive as a three can get.
