Fire Autry

Would he be jumping up and down on the sidelines if he had an Achilles issue?

Someone said they "saw" something on the internet. Didn't post a link.
My comment was based on a comment made on a different thread on this forum. Just repeating it. Not saying it’s true.

I don’t give a single about this years identity. This team isn’t going anywhere. I care about the future of the program and if any of the players worth keeping beyond this season when red is inevitably gone regardless are coachable. Maybe Dan can bring a different energy, intensity and voice to them and coach them up some. I don’t want them being influenced by a clueless head coach. Your’re right to some extent also though, this is the fault of building a inexperienced coaching staff, coupled with an inexperienced HC.
But there’s also the otger side. The fans are becoming restless and like many have said a blow out against Tennessee and the dome will look like a covid arena the rest of the season. We need to generate as much hype and money we can around the program regardless if red is the coach or not.
I would not fire Red with the hope one of the other coaches will change anything short term. Counting Tennessee we will have played 4 straight games against possible top 10 teams. One disastrous half against a tough team should not determine Autry’s fate in my opinion. We should be 9-4 entering ACC play with no significant victories. If you look at ESPN’s predictions of our ACC games we are supposed to do well. I am not defending Red but I think he should be given the chance to finish the season before passing judgement on his future.

Right. I mean good lord, Hopkins, Gmac etc I don’t know what it is about “keeping it in the family” that fascinates some people .

It’s a big world.

Not to mention, we saw what the outcome was when we unnecessarily limited the candidate pool to focus on the wrong hiring criteria.

Time to set nostalgia aside and make the best possible hire.

Plenty of upgrades that won’t break the bank and some proven guys to gamble on if we want that would be in our our price range IMO

I agree.

The fanbase wouldn't be pleased with some of those candidates initially, because they wouldn't be "names" they'd recognize.

But then, they'd see what some of those guys can do in terms of of system / strategy, and they'd scratch their heads in amazement, because it's been a LONG time since we've seen quality basketball here in CNY.

I gotta believe that the next coaching search, whenever that may be, won't have the same "constraints" we saw play out with Red.

Louisville's example of finding a widely respected, charismatic up and coming HC with a proven history of winning at a lower level wouldn't be a bad place to start a search.

The only big name you should give a call to first is Nate Oats, but that is also because he would be a perfect match.

Agreed.

And while there's no certainty in any hire, that sounds like the right approach, and an outcome I'd be pleased with.

isnt nepotism and hiring through personal connections the main way everyone gets hired across the USA these days????!?
If you want results like SU basketball these days then yes.

You have mentioned Oats multiple times now. Not happening in this universe.
I have and will continue doing so as long as a coaching search seems likely at the end of the season. Which after the second half against Iowa State it seems likely. That simply can’t happen again. I’ll shut up momentarily if we somehow come out and beat Tennessee. This season has shown they now likely have the resources to run a modern program. It’s why I think Nate Oats to Syracuse could be more possible today than even 7 months ago. Nate Oats is a self described Syracuse fan and respects and knows the history. If he wins a natty with Alabama, it’s over, he’ll likely retire there and have a statue built for him. However, you make the case to him as to why he can accomplish winning a natty here vs Alabama.

Oates was the hire to make after the second probation and Hop leaving for UW so JAB could play family ball.

Too late now.
It probably is, but if he feels with Syracuse’s location and history that it is easier to land that extra one or two player he’s been missing at Alabama to win a national title, anything is possible. It was not possible back in 2023, but in 2026, if Alabama isn’t competing again for a National Title. He could be reevaluating what he wants in his career. He’s only 51. Give Nate Oats our roster, we win 2 out of 3 in Las Vegas. This is a top 25 roster with average coaching.

People don’t care if we just sneak into the tournament. Fans like myself are tired of being mediocre and want to get back to the days of Syracuse being a powerhouse. Making the tournament and getting bounced in the first round isn’t and shouldn’t be good enough for anyone. If that’s Autry’s ceiling and people are okay with that, that says a lot about the current state of the fanbase and athletics program.

To be clear, I am not suggesting in anyway what or who you should post about, especially when you feel this strongly. My apologies if it came off that way.

What I am saying is that Nate Oats is no longer a match for SU for multiple reasons including his interest in ever coming here or the universities interest in paying his salary.

No worries, it’s just sad that we have another MTE coming away basically winless and likely banged up and tired that makes me super concerned for next Tuesday. In the event we have a coaching search, the new chancellor should step in and make the changes necessary that doesn’t limit the pool of candidates for a top 10 college basketball program of all time.

The time for getting Oats done was some years back

It would be great to get him now, but that seems very unrealistic.

Amen to this. This programs goal EVERY YEAR should be to field a final 4 caliber team. Obviously thats wildly unrealistic, but the goal every year should be enough talent to compete for titles.

He's in a better conference with more money coaching against better teams and lives on a lake that doesn't freeze. The stability is off the charts.

Part of last week that hasn't been mentioned is the ACC looks woefully behind the Big 12, SEC, and at least Michigan. Even Seton Hall spanked cheating Will Wade. Let's see what happens with UNC- MSU today.

UNC has 2 big back to back games that will tell us a lot about them and the strength of the top half of the ACC

SEC is down this year. ACC is better.
