Fire Autry

Basketball is so much more of an easier fix than football. I think everyone gets the football side. The basketball side is entirely our own doing. Too often relationships get in the way of things on the hill over what is best for the University.

I tend to agree but the complexities of the JB situation actually made it reversed save for the Dino buyout. I do believe that despite this week were in a pretty good spot. Red will either ge this team on a roll and make the tourney or were looking at a new HC in April. Either way its a win/win.

Here's a scenario nobody is talking about.

Donnie Freeman is out for an extended period of time -- if I had to guess, he will miss the entire season.

Wildhack gives him a pass due to extenuating circumstances, and we have another year of this crap.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but the way things have gone lately I wouldn't be shocked.
Won’t happen. Red has to make the tournament or he’s fired. Everyone knows this. He was almost fired last year. The entire team could get hurt. It’s still not an excuse.

Red’s fate is binary. Make the tournament and stay, miss and he’s canned.

As of today, things aren’t looking great for his future.

This would be an over reaction if he was in his first season. However we’ve seen games like today for 3 years now. I like to make the Louisville comparison because of how true it is. We could be so much better if we fired Autry at the end of the season and went outside of the program for a new HC with a different vision for this program.
Gotta make the right hire though. There is one name that really intrigues me. I feel like he could be the next Pay Kelsey, Danny Hurley, Ben McCollum or Darian Devries from the mid major level ready to make the jump to the big time. If he does well this season, he could be the guy. I will share it at some point.

That said, I’m still not going to give up on Red or this team so early in the season against top 10 teams, but the lack of offensive sets and movement has me very concerned that it’ll be more of the same.

You don’t trust him based on what exactly? This will be the first decision on the basketball side that is his to make in his entire time at Syracuse. People that think otherwise are willfully ignorant of the politics involved and reality.
I am probably ignorant of the politics. It seems to me that the AD should be able to hire a coach of his university’s signature program which is men’s basketball. If he did not want Red, his vote should be the ultimate decision maker as the head of the department.

I also think that he had an out when Boeheim was suspended by the NCAA the last time and could have asked Jim to go at that point. Instead he kept his buddy on the payroll. When Hopkins spurred our plans ADJW could have gone in a different direction. Again, I am probably ignorant of reality but you hire an AD to lead in those moments. Instead he let Boeheim do whatever he wanted. That assessment is my perception based on limited knowledge.

For the men’s lacrosse “search” it appeared like Wildhack went down the hallway of Manley and asked Gary Gait if he wanted to coach the men instead of the women’s team. I do not recall anyone else being rumored for the job or us conducting a national search. We went within the family again. SU lacrosse would have attracted some top names to consider. Maybe they did look at others and it wasn’t public but it felt like they had already made the decision. As I recall, we knew Gait was the next head coach before Desko, a lifer who was part of 10 national titles and the head coach for 3, was even announcing his retirement. Gary went to the final four last year and this year should be competing for the title so maybe it worked.

Football search led to a high risk - high reward hire. Which after year one looked good and the jury is still out. Fran promoted himself and sold himself like a good salesman and recruiter. Maybe this hire will work out but things are trending poorly. Fran contacted Wildhack and was not in the normal search process. It was not like Wildhack had a file of contacts that led to the decision. I think we need a leader who has contacts outside of alumni/ESPN universe.

Wildhack was involved in extending Quentin Hillsman and the mess with Women’s basketball. He did not exactly walk away from that looking like he knew what was going on with the program.

Kayla Traenor with Women’s lacrosse was another questionable character hire. She was another alumni selection. There were a lot of rumors about her behavior as a coach and some questionable personal decisions off the field. It appeared she left under pressure. I could be ignorant but that is my perception.

Dino’s extension did not work out but I would say we all wanted him signed long term at the time. The AD could have waited it out but might have overreacted to his 10 win season and the idea that other schools were interested in poaching him. The extension is a decision ADJW made so he should own it.

I just don’t trust Wildhack based on this track record.

I mean, the probability of that happening is low.

But it's not 0.

Not going to get into a long post but your information or thought on what occurred for most of your post is simply inaccurate. The lax situation is actually reversed, Gait approached Wildhack and was adamant about wanting the job.

I have to push back about the word “complexities” because one person could have prevented it from being complex. And I say that with the utmost respect for that person.

It’s hard to blame him for being unprepared for this game … although same or instances for both teams.

That being said even if we decide to diminish this one, there is lots of other problems over the past two years.

I don’t think there is much of a point debating firing mid season. It won’t happen mid season. So let’s hope it surprisingly turns arounf for the better by end of season. Or deal with it then.

I assume your talking about JB himself which yes that would be accurate.

We had a bad game. Not even a bad game, a bad second half to a game. Once the wheels started falling off the whole team did not respond well. I am not going to defend Autry but I’m not ready to write off the season based on 20 minutes of basketball. Let’s get Donnie back in the rotation get into ACC play and see what happens. This team has played 6 1/2 games of solid defense we haven’t seen in many years and maybe the offense will play better as the season goes on.
I totally agree the defense has improved this season. How can you feel optimistic about our offense? It's terrible and hasn't improved under Red.

Please keep in mind both KU and Iowa St. were missing their best player. We ere even against those teams.

It's a new NIL era, and Cuse is struggling to compete financially in athletics, especially football. We all see it happening.

Basketball is the answer! This is where we should be putting our money and energy. We can still attract a high-level coach and assemble a supremely talented roster. We have the history, facilities, fans, financial ability, and the GD dome. We got Melo courtside and alumns on the broadcast. What are we doing? The time to start fixing this is now.

Uconn is going that route and they do have 2 recent titles.

There also bleeding cash like the government and just lost there HC to Colorado State because of the lack of funds and conf affiliation. Fball is the only path forward for SU to hopefully end up in a good spot when the Carousel stops. Going all in on bball would be idiotic and the death knell of SU as a power school in athletics.

We need someone that can come in and fire up the donor base. Red doesn't do that and has never done that.
Hop would’ve been amazing at least at that aspect of the job. But I think he was a poor offensive coach, too, just like Red.

You are right - Uconn is trying and failing to compete in football, both on the field and financially. This is exactly my point.

Other schools aren't Private Universities and can tap into tens if not hundreds of millions of state funds. SU also doesn't run like LSU or FSU, there not gonna fire a HC every 2-3 years, they don't have funds. SU takes their Athletics extremely seriously but they're never gonna be able to be Alabama or Ohio State in fball or Kentucky in bball. The Red situation has been explained about a 1000 times by now I don't know how much clearer I can make it.
“Woe is Syracuse”

Don’t tell Duke, Gonzaga, St. John’s, Vandy, and BYU that private schools can’t make good hires
