Fire Autry

His minutes per game is being heavily skewed down by the 3 minutes he played vs Binghamton before he got hurt.

In his 4 games back he’s averaging 30 MPG, which is about 4 minutes lower than his prior 2 seasons at SU. He played 31 vs Houston and 33 vs Kansas, which is probably what he’ll get against Tennessee and the higher caliber ACC opponents.

That all aside, JJ’s minutes is far from the biggest issue with this team.

Good post.

For his minutes to really get down Kiyan needs to get better (like 10 pounds of muscle quick) or some combo of Kingz / Betsy needs to step up.

I’ve wondered if JB was bitter for some reason and decided to burn the program to the ground thinking it would preserve his legacy forever, or if he was delusional to the point of possibly being insane and thought that given time he or Red could right the ship.

He absolutely deserves a lot of credit for building Syracuse basketball - but he should get the lion’s share of the blame for destroying the program, too. Instead of Frank McGuire at UNC, we had Ray Meyer at DePaul.
I don't believe for a minute that JB did anything intentionally to harm the program. For the last few years he wanted to stay so he could coach his son. And I don't believe AA was his choice. But he set it up for ADJW to choose him, whether intentionally or not.

Funny thing is I used to mention Buzz Williams five years ago as the type of coach we likely could attract (ie. not Jay Wright or Rick Pitino). People laughed and said we would do better. Times change and I think someone like him would be a good fit here. The Dan Mullen of college ball.
But only if he goes back to the Jerome Horowitz look.

The really bad thing about this is JB didn't just get to drag the program down for his last 8 years, but he got an additional 3 years of dragging the program down with hiring Red.
JB’s character arc is looking more and more like Walter White with every passing year.

I’m not upset by the 3 losses bag use looking at the schedule when it was released, I fully expected losses against Houston and Kansas. Once I knew we were playing Iowa State, that too went into the loss column.

Yes, Red should have done a better coaching job against Kansas and Iowa to better our chances, but ultimately, those are much better teams and we were without our best player Freeman.

At this point, Red must learn from these losses and put us in a better position to win the upcoming ACC games that we should win and pull off some upsets to get us into the tournament.

For now, I’m optimistic that the ship will be steered in the right direction. If this doesn’t happen, then he should be handed his walking papers in the Spring as most of us thought before the season started.
“Red must learn” is the most overused phrase around here. After 3 years we’re repeating the same old lines.

This has been very simple for me, and hopefully for the people in charge (which it sounds like it is).

Make the ncaa tournament or you’re fired. I also think that’s more than fair given everything about this arrangement the last 2+ years.

Unlike last year this is a roster with plenty of talent more than capable of winning 20+ games including ones that matter. And I expect to.

If it doesn’t happen, I put the majority of the blame on the coaching staff. That’s the job. This is the highest level of college basketball.

Enough with the excuses. Win games that matter!
we don't even get to games that matter.

McNamara has SIENA sitting at 5-2 and in 1st place in the MAAC, with one of those losses coming on a half court buzzer beater. He’s putting together a legit season and he’s already landed a 4 star recruit rated just outside the top 100 for next year, the first in Siena history. He can recruit and win. So why drag this out? Hand him the job now. Autry can stay on board in an athletic department role, but it’s time to move forward. GMac is the future, and every day we wait is another day wasted.

*insert any former SU player here* wouldn’t be getting any attention here if not for the fact that he played at SU

These two sentences seem to be in tension.
That's a matter of interpretation. I don't believe he stayed to coach his son with the intention that it harm the program. If you view that it did, was it staying or coaching his son, or are they inextricably linked? All I'm saying is he didn't do it in order TO harm the program.

Good gawd, GMac will not be the next coach of Syracuse basketball.

Enough with orange alumni. Do a national search and hire the best coach you can find. Do what Arizona did. Find an amazing assistant at a premier program that is due a shot and hire him, then lock him up with a big enough salary he sticks around

Isn't that what we did with Red?

Amazing assistant at a premier program who was highly recommended.

As has been stated, we need to go outside the Boeheim coaching tree with our next hire.

You must have a pretty broad field for the term premier program if Syracuse still falls under that category. The program was clearly in a negative decline at the time of elevating Red and the program has stayed on that course. Barely above .500 in conference play since joining the ACC.
