Fire Autry

After losses lately I wonder if we switched coaches whether the outcome would be different. No way of knowing, but most of the time I assume the answer is yes.

I view it like this: If we still want to be a Top 10 program, we should have a Top 10 coach in D1. The on-court product indicates Autry is at best a bottom half coach in D1. Even if he were a bit above average, IMO that's not good enough for this program, or at least for the program I think this still is.

Bruce Pearls out there and he probably has an orange suit.

We need an instantly recognizable big name coach who just on his clout and influence can turn the program around quickly by getting top 50 recruits and top transfers to come to a middling but once great program.

We can’t keep losing fans and play in a legendary dome that is half empty.

We are at a crucial point in Syracuse basketball.

The discussion is if Red was the guy that Wildhack hired with no reservations, or was Red a person he hired because OTHERS in the university with power advocated for it so strongly he felt he had no option but to go along with it
This is directly contradicted by Consigliere's post saying that they did everything and anything and Red was the guy for the job.
Fact of the matter is there was an almost universal response that the best person to manage the transition from a legend was already on the bench.
Either they all own the decision or no one does.

Hear me out. What if instead of that we hired a coach of a MAAC program who’s one game above 500?

JB definitely wanted GMAC to be next coach. Why the SUAD pushed Autry into the position and ignored JB's recommendation is beyond me. Optics at several levels probably played a significant role. Not saying that GMAC would have been my first choice to replace JB, but I really do honestly feel he would have been much better prepared to be a first time head coach then Autry. Much more of an X and O kind of guy. And ferocious competitor. Time will tell. We'll see where things settle in the next couple of years. Watching Siena closely from a distance lol
Neither Red nor GMac deserved the job. SU should have hired from outside the program, but Wildhack wasn’t really given that choice from the higher ups. There’s university politics at play, and JB had alot of pull with the BOTs. He has longtime friends and supporters like Neil Gold, Mike Tirico and others on the SU board, and Wildhack was trying to gently ease JB into retirement.

Jim Boeheim with this roster would have us as a 5-2 team at worse right now. No way we lose to Iowa State by 31 that's for sure. Boeheim issue at the end was the recruiting did regress from the peak.
Boeheim was at his best and Mr November with his ability to scheme and upset good teams in the preseason tourneys.

Wow so had to take a hiatus after the Kansas disappointment and then the Iowa St disaster. As expected, we knew we would find out if Red was the guy or not after Vegas. Clearly that question was answered with an exclamation point. Such a disappointment across the board.

There’s not a lot of drive to spend much time or money investing in this program this year the way things stand right now given the reality is we don’t have much to lean on for hope until Autry is no longer running things and honestly no idea if there is a capable assistant on staff right now to offer much either outside of retaining Kline as GM.

The highs of what should have been a win over Houston to the absolute embarrassment of where things are now is just… uggh

Built in excuse after built In excuse. Keep protecting eachother yall are so cute.

The same exact issue is going on at Clemson on the football side. Entire coaching staff is full of nepo babies and former players with no coaching experience or reputation to support Their standing and it’s all falling down because they refuse to grow with the times and adjust(obvi portal is one of those). Just Old heads and an echo chamber surrounding altogether Stuck in the past.

In order to get the desired result of JB not lighting the world on fire, hiring internally was how it went.

And this job with a pissed off JB in the building isn't a great job.

If Red doesn't work out there's fresh runway to fix this without any impediments.

Years of this and it still hasn't sunk in.
I think it hasn’t sunk in because insiders here have said that red wasn’t the assistant he thought should take over.

If you don’t think McNamara should be the next head coach, you’re out of your mind. Look at what he’s already done at Siena. He took a program that was flatlining and delivered a 10 win turnaround in his first season, one of the biggest jumps in the country. He’s sitting at 7-2 for the year in 1st place in the MAAC, and that’s with a roster he had to rebuild from scratch. That’s not luck that’s coaching.

Recruiting? He’s already proven he can land and develop talent whom became legit pros. At Siena, he’s shown he can attract players who fit his system and elevate their game. His ties in NY and Pennsylvania are gold and we would instantly lock down the region again with him at the helm.

And let’s not forget. This isn’t just some random coach. GMac IS Syracuse basketball. National champion in 2003, four‑year starter, never missed a game, one of the most beloved players in program history. He bleeds Orange. He knows the culture, he knows the fans and he knows how to win here.

TL/DR: GMac’s proven he can coach, recruit, and build a program. He’s already flipped Siena, imagine what he could do with Syracuse’s resources. If we want to stop spinning our wheels and actually get back to being a national power, the answer is staring us in the face. Hire GMac. Period.

He’s not doing anything more than Hop would have done at a similar post. Close games against weak opponents to get those 7 wins winning with defense but a pretty rough inefficient offense especially from the outside. 24 pct as a team from 3 against a bunch of awful defensive teams. Also play at one of the slowest tempos in the country as well.

Well, he wouldn’t seem to help our offenst. In 3pt shooting, we’re bad, 3-7 out of 365. But Siena is 357. In effective fg% we’re 180. Siena is 266. If we played Siena’s schedule we’d be unbeaten.

Oh look, the super hypothetical “JB would’ve done better” post.

I’m not throwing accolades at Red, but to assume JB would have this team performing better conveniently ignores the pitiful performances his squads put up in his last years of coaching.

I’m not sure if this is a troll post or you actually believe the stuff you wrote.

The recruiting under Red is the best it's been since the sanctions.

Red’s not a continuity hire, he’s ADJW’s chosen guy. This isn’t CBA basketball, its a p4 top 10 program. You don’t settle for people. You’re paid to make decisions you’re held accountable for, or at least thats how the real world works.

I know plenty of people here are ADJW fans but I’ve hardly seen any CEO’s or other AD’s get so many excuses. We’ve got to perform now. Complacency and apathy don’t make failure go away.
Quote from the horse's mouth at the time JW announced Adrian's hiring.

"Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job.' “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

There are folks here whom dismissed this as simple PR propaganda, what have you, etc. Perhaps, it's certainly convenient, however, they are the words John voluntarily and specifically chose to utter to the viewing public. Considering this was his 1st major hire (revenue sports) as AD, he alone exposed his credibility.

I mean, it’s like people have somehow forgotten his final press conference meltdown after the loss in the ACC tourney. What would have happened if Red or GMac didn’t get the job? It would’ve been defcon 5. Also, maybe many of the newer folks on here don’t know about how Hop was essentially forced to leave for the Washington job because JB was making it known that he didnt want to retire and making things very difficult for Hop to set himself up for success.

Gmac might be a better communicator than Red, but he’s no great shakes either. There’s nothing innovative or inspired about what he’s doing at Siena. He, too, was patently unqualified to take over the Syracuse job. But Wildhack really had no choice but to go with a continuity hire, per a number of insiders on here. JB still had a lot of loyalty among stakeholders up on the Hill, including on the BOTs.

Yeah his team reminds me of what we saw with Hop at UW - really poor shooting / offense and a very solid defense. Ultimately he might win a good number of games at Siena in that league but that wouldn’t translate very well at the P4 level

The 2-3 zone caused problems for teams that did not see it often. It did not cause problems for coaches in conference who stuck around a long time and learned how to coach against it. To me, that is why it works in November... teams are barely learning how to play with each other (and working young guys in for their first experience) and now they have to work as a team & be patient.

No argument here. That’s why he was Mr. November and not necessarily Mr. March
