Fire Autry

The biggest problem (aside from Mr. "ya know?" Red) is Naithan George. By the way, I play a drinking game with my gf and friends where we drink every time Red says "ya know?" in post game interviews. We're all trashed in minutes. Try it it's fun 😁! Anyway, in my opinion George is a monumental disappointment and hasn't provided the offense with any sort of boost we thought we'd be getting over Carlos. PG is arguably the most important position- sets up the offense and is supposed to make everybody better. He doesn't do that. When he failed to get up a game-winning shot against Houston I knew it was going to be another long year at that position. Last night he amazingly scores zero points against freaking Hofstra at home while shooting 0/4 (0/3). He did get 6 assists but sorry man we need 10 points from our PG on top of that. He is the reason we lost. No point guard, no good team. It simply boils down to that in my opinion.

In his last 5 games, aside from St Joe's where he shot 4/6, his shooting percentage has been nothing short of horrific. Hofstra 0/4 (0%), Tennessee 1/7 (14%), Iowa State 1/5 (20%), Kansas 1/4 (25%), Houston 4/13 (31%). That's 7/33 (21%) shooting from our point guard since the competition has ramped up. This is where the Autry abject stupidity comes into play. You're tied with Houston and you call this dude's number shooting 4/13, over JJ who was shooting 5/8 that night? I don't understand some of the decisions this dude makes. It's a shame because he really struck gold with Kyle. What a waste if the talent and athletic bunch on this roster don't get a crack at it in March.

Let's see what happens over these next few games though, and how the team responds. I know everyone is over Red, but we haven't hit ACC play yet, so the opportunity to turn it around is still there. With Donnie hopefully set to return by the Clemson game it can be turned around, but we will need George to average 10 and 6 assists for us to go 14-6 or better in conference play (with at least 2 more quad 1 wins), which is what I think we'll need to make the tourney. Keep the chins up and let's hope for the best. The talent is there.
No turning around the fact that SU is literally the worst free throw shooting team in the country.

Not happening
Maybe not, but that is a separate issue from his job performance. He appears to be an okay administrator on the economic end of the job, however his abilities on managing coaching decisions and coaching performance has been terrible. From my perspective the dome experience outside athletic performance has gone down significantly under his tenure.

We certainly know what DC thinks about the coaches. I believe he called them clowns.
I must have missed that. Could part of his ire be a generalized thing stemming from that legal matter where he thought he was entitled to certain IP and the school fought him?

It’s been said a billion other times, but it makes me profoundly sad that Boeheim’s legacy is as tarnished as it is. Dude could have retired after the Sweet 16 loss in 2021, and we probably would feel a lot different about him. Instead he coached us to a losing season in 2022. Everything since then feels like we’re sitting on our balls repeatedly.

Retiring after 2018 and before Buddy would have been best. Oh well. It is what it is and the next hire has to be completely far away from JB. It's time for Syracuse basketball to move on.

I totally agree, but that was NEVER going to happen. Still, I thought he’d leave after winning some tourney games.

Finally got home, I am so pissed at myself for buying season tickets again, I told myself last year when I sold my Georgetown tickets for $15 a piece I wasn’t going to waste my money again until they fired Red, I lied to myself obviously. I watched school after school fire coaches mid season, and frankly I hope the same happens to Red alum be damned. This has been a disaster, this should be a top 20 job in the country, if I was going to hire a new coach my short list would be
Fred Hoiberg
Thad Matta
Greg McDermott
Ed Cooley
Anthony Grant.
The problem is it isn't a top 20 job anymore, the last 11 years after Ennis left have been pitiful for this program. Without Melo having his son come here we are among the leftovers when talking about college basketball.

It is a top 20 job, in fact a top 10 job, if you do everything in your power to make it one. There is a reason the enterprise value of the program is in the top 10.

I don't know how much clearer I can make it. Syracuse didn't want its HOF coach with numerous BOT and Donor backers in an all out war when he had to be fired vs "retiring".
That's why I said earlier this is all on the BOT. They caused all the problems starting with Jake, Coach P, and hiring imbeciles like Nancy, and the Good Doctor, who hired GRob. Then wouldn't spend the money when Doug was here.
Then they expect the fans to pay to watch mediocrity.
There needs to be an accounting of who the people were who screwed everything up.

That's the problem. The old men in charge apparently don't care. If Fran hadn't talked his way into the job, we probably would have made another cheap hire on the football side. And we wouldn't have the NIL money to fix things.

Perhaps the biggest mistake was giving Autry a 5 year contract, then an extension till 2030. Hindsight is always 20/20. But giving a 5 year contract, then an extension, at a (once) premier program to someone who's never been a Head Coach?
Wait what? How did he earn an extension? This is ludicrous. It can’t be real.

It's a 5-year deal, but everyone has said that the Autry was getting three years minimum.
Ah that's right. Thanks. I have to assume the buyout is minimal since Autry would have taken the job no matter what - not like they had to lure him away from another program with a good contract.

I don't think it helps to do it midseason. He is a good man. The administration doesn't want to create a circus around Autry. And any coach we would be looking to bring in would be currently coaching another program anyways. It's not like they would start in February. But word would certainly get around the coaching fraternity that the program is hunting for the right hire. Any coach with ambition will know there is a >50% chance this job is open come springtime. I am sure that word is already circulating, and back channel chats including inbound, are percolating.
Agreed.

Plus, he's an alum, with long-standing ties to the program as both a player and a coach. There is no need to embarrass him with a mid-season termination.

Also, this season's story is still being written. IMO only -- but the Hofstra loss offsets the Tennessee win, both in terms of NET value and in terms of fan perception. Getting to the NCAA tournament -- the line of demarcation that is the minimum threshold demanded by the AD this year -- is going to be that much harder. But it is still possible. What if we somehow knock off a Duke or Louisville? I know, I know... Lloyd Christmas.

But we should know fairly quickly. Our elite defense has really tapered off. Was hoping that would carry us to 12+ conference wins. Now, I'm not so sure.
