Fire Autry

Look at all the '26 commits. The basketball world knows what is by far most likely going to happen, and have for over a year.

I'm surprised that the Anthony camp didn't push hard to find a real staff for Kiyan, but maybe they're just too close to it all. Not that I can blame them; I know that success is unlikely, but I still can't help but hope that the return of Donnie and the start of ACC play will help the team kick things into another gear.

Maybe melo can pay all of Reds buy out

Alternatively, let's root for everything to click and that the Hofstra game was an aberration and we cruise into the tournament. 🍊
I, too, hope that Red fundamentally changes everything about his coaching and magically becomes great. Barring that, I hope he loses out and gets fired before the end of the season so we can get a jump on finding a new coach. Do I think that'll happen? No. Do I hope that's what happens? Yes.

I thought someone close to the team posted on here last week or the week before that his mandate isn't to just make the tournament but to make it and win at least one game.
Yep, I read the same thing. Seems like the goal is to be firmly in the tournament. Guessing that's an 8/9 seed or better. That's not asking much at all for Syracuse basketball.

Can you link that post or remember who posted that was the goal?

Bulldog. Post #706 in this thread.
I was told by numerous people he has to win a game in the tournament and not the play in game. Best case scenario this team out scorching and it helped recruiting and reputation. It’s been far from that. So now what does everyone want- The team to do well and win so red stays around or root for them to lose so they get a new coach ? I think I can take the temperature of the room lol. But either way this was the worst case scenario start. Lose Donnie. Compete in some big games. Lose to Hofstra.

But I said all along, if you don’t win with this roster, we know who to blame

Red has to make the tournament (be 1 of the 68) selected. Making the tournament = playing "meaningful game(s)" at the end of the season. At least that was my understanding as of last week.

But, I will always defer to your info, BD.

It is a tough situation for the people who don’t believe Red is currently a good coach at this level. I can never cheer for Syracuse to lose games but I can also recognize that we desperately need a new coach and a new vision for the way we do things on the basketball side of things. In the day and age of the portal a high level P4 job isn’t a place where you can learn to be a head coach. There is no more wait 5 years etc. The portal is win now era. Currently Red has proven he can’t coach at this level YET and needed to do what Gerry did and drop down and learn. So now we are at the point where what is best for the current team and current coaching staff is probably not best for the Syracuse basketball long term health

There's rare unanimous agreement on this board that Red is a nice guy. Unfortunately, the famous Leo Durocher quote is appropriate "Nice guys finish last." I really believe this is why the team hasn't responded since the Hofstra loss (or had any sustained success during Red's tenure). There's never been a standard or any accountability for sloppy play or careless mistakes.

Any decent coach has this quality.
Red wants to be a friend.

IMO, being a head coach today is as difficult as it has ever been relative to accountability, etc., especially at the P4 level. The new wild, wild west landscape of the transfer portal and NIL (pay for play) has undoubtedly made it such. You want to make a player "accountable," especially at the level in which it's likely required, etc., you're faced with the reality of these privileged 'young adults' saying "see ya" all the while 'taking the money and run.'

I get what you're saying. Listening to Wildhack's comments about the past football season and current basketball season gives me a lot of hope. Wildhack supports and believes in Fran, while he calls out losing to Hofstra. There was no mention of the embarrassing loss to Notre Dame. Red is in a lot of trouble, there was no support provided from Wildhack. Red has to do things he's not capable of (no offensive system, develop subbing patterns, motivate players on a consistent basis, etc) for this team to play meaningful games in March.

If sneaking into the tournament with this roster is the new standard we're cooked...

"Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job.' “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

Wildhack alone placed himself in such a credibility black hole by voluntarily choosing to use the words he did relative to his introductory speech, unlike the alleged forced hiring of Red. So, he's staring (at least perception wise)...'fool me once...

Good recall on the presser, I didn't really believe him when he said it, but he did so we should expect decent results if he's gonna state that or JW should be fired soon

I’ve read enough on this board to believe JW has been an overall positive in his position as AD.

Stuff like this. Yeah, he said those things, but, IMO, it’s all optics. What was he supposed to say? He’s toeing the company line and working with what he was essentially told to do from the BoT/others to move on from Boeheim. I would think most frequent visitors of this board would get that at this point. JW didn’t unilaterally make the decision to hire Red, but has to present it like he did.

I was told the “meaningful games” means a win in the tourney. Again, I think the Donnie injury could play a part in weather Red comes back or not. But if Donnie was healthy and they came out blazing, everything shifts obviously. However, they spent quite a bit of money on this roster. Everyone did their job, red just needs to win. But the meaningful games I was told meant win in tourney… JW thinks this should be a top 32 team with this roster

It should be. There are some good players in all positions. I know some people think you can't coach free throw shooting but I don't buy that. To have already lost two games because of missed free throws is malpractice. And there are probably more losses for that reason alone down the road.

The ACC schedule is manageable. This isn't some year of 2 top heavy ACC teams with Cooper Flagg's or 25 year old Bancot's on it and then a 3rd and 4th team trying to fight onto the bubble. Also it's not like Autry needs to survive a gauntlet of Hall of Fame coaches either, Brownell is literally the most tenured ACC coach at this point, but doesn't have a team that's average age is pushing 24 now.

Autry needs to leave no doubts. He needs to walk away from ACC play knowing that we beat every team we should have and then beat all these other bubble teams. We all obvi know that a loss to one of the 4 ACC bottom feeders and it's over but can you imagine Chris Bell's Cal team comes to the dome and beats us. Even with NCState if Qadir shreds us I'll be like what the hell. Handful of other teams like ND, VT, SMU that should have no business hanging with Syracuse year after year.

I'm just ready to find out what we got and start playing "meaningful" basketball again. I can't stomach Autry another year anyway if we can't win in the ACC.

Yeah, so it has been said here in regards to being literally a puppet on the Red hire. Regardless, he chose the words he chose, unless of course, you're also saying (as a matter of fact to boot) that he also had no say so whatsoever in the particular words he used, etc. in addition to the hiring. That is what I'm specifically referring to relative to perception and his ensuing credibility on the "no support provided from Wildhack" remark.

Allegedly, with the powers that be already making him appear foolish by forcing the hire behind the scenes, all the while letting the public believe (perception wise) it was his decision, I imagine he has enough self pride, etc. to draw the line somewhere and not doubling down in support, etc. Otherwise, it only makes him appear to be even that much more incompetent perception wise.

I’m with you. I’ve been a fan of Syracuse basketball since 1975 and this is the first time I’ve ever wished they were not successful. I can’t bear another couple of years with Red. I’m afraid we’re going to turn into Indiana and never be successful again; we’re a mid program who hasn’t been ranked in the top 25 in 10 years.
Fans were SPOILED for 40 years or whatever number you want to give the success of the program. I understand the need for change, but I would never root against the school, or the coach, or a player. Chris Bell and Quadir Copeland will never get the vile booing that JG3, a four year student athlete alumni received when he came back, but Chris Bell, especially, had his share of detractors.

For fans who root for the program not to be successful, are not fans. Call yourself what you want, but a real fan would never root against their team, ever. Wildhack knows the deal. He understands the dollars and cents. He knows the program needs to go in a different direction. And he will make the decision when the time comes.

I'm a NY Giants fan. Don't you think I want the 1st pick in the draft and Joe Schoen replaced. Of course I do, but what happens tomorrow against the Raiders will happen. Hopefully, they don't put Jaxson Dart at risk.

I'm also a fan of the Utah Jazz. They will have a pretty good 1st round pick this year, but if it's not top 8, it gets conveyed to one of the best teams in the league, OKC. Yesterday, they beat Detroit at the buzzer, the team with the best record in the East and with every victory, they jeopardize losing that 1st round pick.

I'm never going to root for the Giants, or Utah, and Syracuse not to be successful. I want all three to do well and set themselves up for success. I understand you need to sometimes to take steps backwards before you take a giant step forward. But in Syracuse's case, you can still have success and changes can still be made.

More than 1/2 a season to go. Let’s see what happens with a full roster.

I can’t cheer against SU and there is no need to. The inevitable WtheF loses and blowouts will come and Red will finally get bounced.

JW and the BOT will have their mulligan. I hope for my sake they hit a home run with the next hire. I am so indifferent to SU sports and college sports in general these days. I long for the days when I use to look forward to the games and nothing short of birth or death would stop me from watching.
