Fire Autry

If you watch the assistant coaches especially Griffen they show zero fire, Griffen looks around like he does not care, nothing. If I was Autry even though he is the problem, I would fire 2 coaches and shake things up.

Please let Gerry McNamara try three years before hiring an outsider as our coach. But prepare for a replacement if the second year is subpar.

It’s not the school’s style to fire a coach mid season. Especially with Red being a former player. But I wouldn’t be sad to see if Englestad could try to salvage the season with many quad 1 opportunities left on the schedule.

Red is not going to pull that off. And you’d get a head start on a coaching search. It’s a new environment out there with the portal being a thing and players getting paid. I’m not sure principals like “we don’t fire coaches mid season” holds much water anymore.

As I posted after the last game, I don't think firing him now helps SU at all. It just makes it uncomfortable for possible candidates being asked about the job from media etc., having to deny it, and possibly getting extensions at their current school. I'm sure Wildhack can contact agents and see what's out there.

The reality is a new coach will lead to huge roster turnover. If we do not pony up big money for a name brand guy, it is going to take a few years to get the roster built back up. Red needs to be fired, but I am not expecting this to be a quick turnaround. Two or three years before were relevant again, and that depends on who we hire. I do not see this being a quick fix.
Are you kidding? Coaches are turning around programs in one year now, including some mid major guys. Have you seen what Darian Devries and Ben McCollum are doing at Indiana and Iowa? Or Pat Kelsey at Louisville last season.

I don’t believe someone as media savvy as Carmelo would say something derogatory about Red like that.

That’s totally something a parent who isn’t a multi-millionaire with many diversified businesses would do.

Agree, absolutely no chance it was Carmelo. If it was, it wouldn’t have been reported as “a parent”, it would have been “Carmelo” and this would be a much, much bigger story. And - he would obviously know that.

Since the tweet came from Cuse Sports Talk, I’ll venture a guess that it was Paulie S who posted it, as he sits at the scorer’s table.

They really need to make the change now. At least it would provide a jolt and possibly lead to better attendance down the stretch. There’s nothing to gain or lose from waiting until the end of the season.

Agreed 144%!!

JW makes the statement “Coach Autry has been relieved of head coaching duties”, and have Engelstad be interim HC for the rest of the season.

Can it really be any worse than what we’ve been seeing?

Then they can get started with a full National search for the best possible HC options -
And specifically NOT with any ties to Syracuse.

It’s a complete mess and there’s no easy answers. Firing Red now could potentially do more harm than good. A mid-season firing will result in one of the assistant coaches taking over. I don’t believe that any of the bench coaches can do better, and I think that it will negatively affect the young players on the team.

The most important thing is for the powers that be to look ahead and figure out how to keep the core players for next year. Melo should be assured that Kiyan will be starting next year, and Melo should be involved with deciding who the next coach should be. White should receive a huge NIL and like Kiyan, be guaranteed a starting spot. If Freeman doesn’t take his chances and go pro, it will be hard to convince him to come back. He will get offers from some of the top programs in the country. Betsy should also be targeted as a player we want to return.

From there, it’s up to a new outside head coach to be able to assess other players on our roster that he’d like to keep (Fennell, Womack?) and to pull top players from the portal to round out the team. As some have mentioned, there are examples of other teams that were as lowly as we are now and made a complete turnaround in one year.

The right coach after this season is the biggest factor as to whether we make a change in the right direction or continue to flounder.

The new coach should and will have autonomy over the whole roster. Kiyan and Sadiq included
