Future Campus Framework Discussion

My thoughts on the overfunded United States military industrial complex doesn't belong here.
There is enough to complain about with some military spending. However, the Armed Forces musicians are not one of them. They probably save money over privatizing their duties.

Anyway, think what you like, we who served did so to provide you with that freedom. And, no, I was not a musician; though, I am very good at playing the radio, even if I do say so myself.

Actually some of the people on here should have had to spend 8 weeks in basic training.
Maybe then they might appreciate what those who have served have gone through.
Sure there is a lot of unnecessary spending, but would rather overspend then underspend and not be prepared when our guys on on the front lines.
If the world and humans were better beings we wouldn't need a military, but thats the world we live in.

people act like every company in the world doesnt waste tons of money
Exactly! There would be little to no R&D, we all know people who have jobs because of a relationship with an owner or executive, there would be no elaborate, ornate architecture, the list goes on and on.

Further, what is a waste to some is not a waste to others. The military loves technology that actually works. Most Russian and Chinese technology is far behind the U.S. and our allies. The West believes and holds as true as possible to the sanctity of life, we can see the Russians, Chinese and North Koreans don't hold the same value, see Ukraine.

And to keep the spending in check, the U.S. government assures some accountability by buying weapons from the lowest bidder: ponder that for a few minutes! See Murphy's Laws of combat: The Definitive Murphy's Laws of Combat

Not trying to get political, it really isn't political as both parties in the U.S. generally agree regarding the sanctity of life-thus the need an application of technology; the difference generally lies with the amounts needed for our country, at which point both parties fail to supply enough if you are the troops under fire...

We could solve the homelessness problem in this country for a small portion of what we spend on the military.

Would be more cost-effective than making me spend 8 weeks in basic training.

Isn't there a big difference between wasting one's private funds and public funds.
I don't voluntarily fund government. Waste seeking profit motive is different than Waste for public improvement

A little waste on a large scale adds up.

we train thousands of people. Do we expect them all to be great soldiers, or do we try to level up the bottom X percent?

Like all that money that went to Ukraine

i updated my post with more research on it, but there's nothing you can point to that could suggest that it will be anything significant in the context of north american university athletics.

if the school is looking to develop a foothold in Asian markets, then i'd concede that sure, it couldn't hurt
I just saw this and thought it was pertinent to our conversation here.

Thanks to those that served, let’s get back on topic and off the political discussion please. There is an enrollment cliff coming, especially in the NorthEast. Syracuse needs to position itself, I’m not sure they are doing that.
From the Chancellors senate remarks. That said I agree with you totally:

Once again, for the fifth consecutive year, Syracuse University received a record number of first-year undergraduate applications. More than 46,000 have applied to be part of our academic community.

College campuses have had teams for several years, including SU. There is really nothing special in any degree programs that I can think of. The business aspect was already covered by business degrees, the games are done by companies like Activision (who my son works for), the broadcasts have been done for about 20 years and any communications degree would cover all aspects of broadcastings the games. And honestly we are not really the first school to cover this is some form. When we first put the room in Barnes, my son found that humorous as it was way behind the times. Many schools already had this type of thing. As a general rule he is not involved in this aspect. But during COVID he was. He is a Director of Technology for Activision/Microsoft, mostly Call of Duty.
That's awesome about your son - i'd love to send a detailed proposal for a remaster of the Tony Hawk Underground 1/2 games - and you're right about epsorts teams being on campuses and about esports being broadcasted.

But no college has made an investment this large on their esports teams, and the broadcasters aren't interested in college teams.

Until the college teams get better or more physically attractive i dont see any tv interest.

And again, i hope you dont take any of this as any disparagement of you or your son. If you happen to talk to him about this, please mention my idea about the tony hawk thing he will make a lot of money.

There's nothing I enjoy more than guys posting on the internet about a college football team calling other people nerds.

Look in the mirror, assuming there's one in your mom's basement. Dorks.
Sounds like projection

My dad was a naval officer for thirty years and worked in auditing the navy's maintenance and modernization of ships as a civil servant after retirement.

He would 100% agree that the budgets are bloated and spending is off the rails

I have a feeling it is much easier to spend then to build the oversite to keep track of things.

Surprised this hasn’t been listed here yet:

I thought I posted that here, but I see now that it apparently never actually posted. Unfortunately, it's not as close as the Sheraton or the Crowne Plaza, but it should be a great addition to downtown and a nice option for folks coming in for games/other university events.

Agree.

It is a terrific location. Not sure about where people will park but I really like the design. It fits in with the existing buildings and actually looks tasteful and attractive. A big rooftop bar is going to be really popular on nice summer nights.

I had heard parking underground.

The new building will include a three floor parking garage as part of it.

This particular block of downtown really needed this development, and the city as a whole needs the hotel rooms. Definitely great news, especially coming from a national developer with a track record in this space.
