Game ball to DC

McCord, Meeks, and Barron is the correct game ball recipients. Unsung heroes here are the offensive line who did pretty well pass blocking. NC State was bringing a lot of blitzes and they did fairly well, which with a QB with McCord’s pocket presence is enough. Run blocking is still inconsistent but I loved when we pulled Washington late on the good run by LQA
underrated is Meeks skying and nabbing that onside. It should count as his 12th reception and it might have been his most important

DC meaning the defensive coordinator?

Nahhh.

They did what they had to do. But we gave up 411 yards on 45 plays. 9.1 yards per play. That’s… not good.

The O dominated ToP and we forced turnovers, so alls well that ends well.

But thank goodness the D didn’t face another 20+ snaps.

He blitzed tonight more than he has all year…
Yes i agree but we won them blitzes more do because of the pressure. Did we win a few 3 man rushes, no not really but when we presdured we did. I do see we have no 4 man pressure at all.

Offense is definitely prime this season. Say what you want about Erob and the D, they hald State to 7 points through 3qtrs on their home turf and sold out stadium. We are not Georgia or Bama. Erob understands there is still work I am sure. We are 5 and 1 going into a bye week. Get ready for Pitt, heal up.

I didn't hate dropping 8 with a spy on a true frosh QB. He was very quick and hard to tackle in space but it worked for the most part.

McCord is MVP every game, without him we might have 2 wins
True. His play is masking a lot of issues, some that cannot be fixed with the current personnel that we have. (Although I did feel this was the first bad defensive performance since Ohio). And the same could be said of Dungey and Nassib as far as carrying an “ok” team to better things.

These are the issues that I don’t think can be fixed this year that McCord will have to get us through .

-Run Blocking

-Safety discipline

-arm tackling

- 3 man rush, 3man rush, 3 man rush. It sucked in 1987 versus Auburn, it sucked in 1998 versus Tennessee and it sucked every single time it’s been tried since. Please, please, please, stop. (But that’s on the coaches not the players.)

We need to be more aggressive with the spy. That was the problem, we gave him space..

Yeah, no. Defense had moments but it was not a great performance. Freshman QB and you give him all day to throw… that is not a smart game plan
You sir are Tracy Morgan, at best, in this commercial…

We are not perfect! Our head coach knows that! We have room to grow! Our head coach knows that ! We are 5-1, we have been in every game1 Why can't we as fans, celebrate where we are and continue to root this team on each game, and see where it all shakes out in the end. Before the season started, I think most of us on this thread would have been happy with a 5-1 record after 6 games. If I recall, many were expecting us to lose to GT and North Carolina State and thought we would beat Stanford. Not many predicted 6-0 and we almost got there! Relax, and enjoy the ride!

Who's pretending?
The worry was the DL would get pushed around and dominated on the ground and opponents could play keep away. That hasn’t happened. The defense has been good at keeping points off the board, ok in the red zone, and very good on third down.

Far from dominant, could tackle better, but it’s not terrible. 10 plays, 3% of snaps against, shouldn’t define the defense.

Three of the last four games the defense has allowed 19, 14, and 17 pts.

Take 2 big plays away from NC St. and the defensive narrative is different, IMHO.
But, that is not how we should conduct an honest analysis. Take away our two best offensive plays and we lose the game.

The attempts to explain away our defensive flaws is a thing of wonder.

Its OK. We suck at tackling & the DBs are apparently slow.

I'm certainly not saying our defense is good. But, I don't think we're horrible other than we seem to give up big plays at the worse times. We do well in redzone defense and we've held most of the big threat runners to mediocre games. Just, seems we give up the untimely big play too often.

What would our 2 best plays have been? we had 4 25+ catches. not sure any of them defined the game.
The 2 for NC st one was a 5yd play we turned into 75 and the other never happens with a proper review.

Taking away the biggest gain in each game (which isn't really fair but let's play)...

Ohio
YPP Avg 6.09 vs 5.84
Yards Avg 385.2 vs 397
So yards are slightly worse and YPP slightly better. Given that they have played 3 G5s in their other 4 games I would say this was a poor showing (and that is after taking away their biggest play).

GA Tech
YPP 6.35 vs 5.29
Yards 423.3 vs 333
This was an amazing job even with the big play added back. Unfortunately this has been the outlier thus far.

Stanford
YPP 4.29 vs 4.41
Yards 291.2 vs 304
To be fair the entire team did not show up this game. So it wasn't just the D. But even taking away their biggest play we were bad in comparison to their averages.

UNLV
YPP 6.42 vs 6.14
Yards 385 vs 301
The yards are way better but that is more from a lack of plays. But if you take away their biggest play, we did slightly better.

NC State
YPP 5.45 vs 7.64
Yards 323.5 vs 336
This is pretty bad. The lack of plays kept the yards respectable but the YPP was awful. And this is without their biggest play!

Going by yards and ypp, our D is average IF you take away the biggest play conceded each game. But we have done a good job NOT giving up points. Thanks mainly to being 17th nationally in Redzone TD%. Is that sustainable? Especially given that the last 6 teams are generally better on O than the first 5 (FBS only) have been?

IMO our D is going to have to step up quite a bit if we are going to beat those remaining ACC teams. I think the meat of our schedule is coming up.

This. Bottom line. The D needs to tackle much, much better, play well for 4 quarters, & reduce the amount of time receivers are running wide open.
