Georgia Tech Postgame

Red thanked the "fans who came out" and said there was "a lot of noise" about the program as his only opening comments in his presser. I may have misinterpreted, but he seemed kind of angry when he said it. Maybe he wanted to avoid doing a FLJ rant about lack of attendance because that attendance was bad.
I’ll give credit where credit is due. Red is making lineup changes and adjustments more quickly. I felt earlier this season, changes were reactive, but as of late it’s been more proactive. Also, it’s moments of noise and unprecedented small crowd sizes that can really make or break the program and the culture you’re trying to build. I would love nothing more than Red and the team to shut us all up. I know people feel differently, but I’m especially frustrated because I think this team is capable of a lot more than they’ve shown us. That’s why it’s been incredibly frustrating and discouraging. JB last few teams were not great, but we maximized what we were capable of.

Wow, a victory over a team that plays above the HS level !!!

I am impressed with the effort the team put forth without Freeman. Best D I have seen all season from them.

The O still leaves a LOT to be desired. The TOs are just killing us, but at least tonight we overcame them. We dominated the glass and that is why we were able to overcome the TOs last night.

JJ is such a huge difference maker. He can get us the big buckets and FTs when we need them. If we can keep it close we will now have real opportunities to secure some W's with him on the court.

Davis had that huge J at the end that all but secured the W. He was solid all game with a near double-double.

Lampkin was a focal point of activity. He put up a double-double and played hard. However, there was a point in the game when he looked like a TO machine. I was surprised to read the box and that he "only" had 4 TOs. Looked like closer to ten to me.

Bell seems comfy coming off the bench and again played well despite poor trey shooting. He had that big board at the end.

Taylor is emerging as our most consistent three point threat. Hope he can keep it up.

Petar is Mr. Energy. It seems that most of his fouls occur because when he puts his arms up that they are not straight up and are angled into the shooter. Come on, that should be easily correctible.

Moore has got to find a way to get some easy hoops to regain confidence. If he can come back to early season highlights we might have the ability to make a big jump in team performance.

Carlos looks like he totally lost confidence now that he is not starting. He needs to suck it up and earn any minutes that he might be getting forward going. There was one play when he dribbled to the hoop and could have had a wide open layup and he didnt even look up and just dribbled through.

I thought Red did a really nice job in getting them ready to play, especially on D, and I thought he managed the rotations well.

If we can get the TOs down to around 10 per game we will be able to hang with at least all of the mid-pack ACC teams.

I don't intend to sound mean-spirited, but I am thrilled that JC didn't start and played only ten minutes. That is the change that affects all other changes imo. Obviously, he is a great kid but this has been needed for months.

It should have happened from day 1 when starling was healthy. Carlos was awful from day 1 and not sure why it took Autry so long to realize. I assume Stubbornness about willingness to admit a major portal miss .
If I remember correctly all the players were talking about Carlos’ leadership before season started. They all had major respect for him. I think his personality, effort, and leadership got him so many minutes. His talent or lack thereof is getting him benched.
I’m just glad Red can see what we are seeing and making the right move.

One day at at a time.

JC is not an ACC level player, yet alone starter material. Donnie is incredibly talented but defensively he makes me long for the days of Warwick or Grant. Clearly a better defensive team the less JC, Choppa and Donnie play.
I think our best defense last night other than Petar was letting GaTech airball open shots.

Yeah, I think he probably is very good in practice. There has been moments this season where Carlos has made brilliant plays and you can see why the staff was very high on him. I think a major part of the struggles is Carlos getting acclimated to a much bigger stage of basketball. The problem is that as the PG you need to be sure of yourself on the court all the time and know where to get your teammates the ball to make plays. I think more bench time will help take pressure off of Carlos of being sure of himself being capable of being the starter at this level and conditioned to make it through games. Also allow him to learn where he needs to get the ball to his teammates to make good plays and where he needs to insert his presence on defense, so that when he is on the floor, he is effective and a net positive.

I assured you guys JC would not be the starter rather soon. Then JJ got hurt so there was no other option. Red knew he had to bench him and he did. And not only did he bench him he barely played and they won. I’m not dogging the kid, but they won without him playing a lot. And this was the plan was to have JJ have the ball more and play the point and it worked last night. I know GT is bad but Red had some good moments last night.

JJ was the best player on the floor last night for Syracuse, but he was barely above average relative to other ACC players. That was an ugly game. Dubs are dubs, but oof.
I feel about JJ the same way I felt about many guys during JB's final years. They were good, but limited, players who were asked to take on roles that were both a poor fit and unfair relative to their overall talent. JGIII was the poster child for that, IMHO.

Starling is a nice player. He's not among the best guards in the ACC, as Red has suggested. He's a guy that would be at the back end of an 8-man rotation in our glory years. But in this era of SU hoops, he's expected to be the alpha and omega. It's really not fair to him.

the Eddie ‘throw down dunk’ attempt in the second half was actually funny. He actually looked like he might pull it off but in reality he didn’t seem to get over the rim. The entire bench was cracking up! As far as the crowd it felt like a preseason game against Oakland vs an ACC game - looked like 8-9k but the regulars gave there seats away - I’d say 80% of the people around us were not ‘regulars’
When I saw that I kept waiting for the referee to signal no foul because it wasn't really a true shot attempt, kind of like an uncatchable pass. I do love Eddie's attitude!

And he's not even as good as Girard. We've lost our ability to identify who is good because we've got worse each year.

It reminds me of SU football. For years I'd read glowing reports from people who attended practices about certain players that "has the best arm in the conference" or "is going to be one of our best receivers in a long time". And then they'd play real games and be perfectly mediocre.

Folks were misjudging because the team-wide level of talent was poor. They assumed because someone was doing very well against ourselves well that it meant they were going to be very good against others

I get that feeling about SU hoops now. Maybe some guys looked great in practice because they were practicing against other SU players?

Disagree on that one. I agree that we can’t expect Starling to be a Tyus Battle, but even that was unfair to Tyus even though he did great things. Way too much relying on hero ball. Having said that, the only aspect I would give the edge to Girard over Starling is the 3 point shot. I will agree in that Girard gave us everything he had and the teams that he was on maximized their potential. I can’t say the same for Starling so far (not the giving us everything he has) but the teams he has been on maximizing their potential. So far we are underperforming the most to the potential of a team I have ever seen at Syracuse.

Passing, protecting the ball, ft shooting, generating steals, not fouling, playing defense. JJ is worse in all of those areas.

Last nights game really emphasizes the gap between top “coaches” and top former players who coach. There is a small list of players who excelled at high major cbb or were pros that are successful coaches in cbb. Some have the benefit of massive NIL pools and brands but even then it’s a struggle.

Autry vs Stoudamire is a great example of this and Autry vs many of the coaches in bigger games this year shows up too. I wish I had time to break it all down but a google search into all the top 80 Ken Pom teams and the coach backgrounds really sheds a bright light on this.

Autry has been an assistant for a long time and doesn’t seem to have yet converted to a true capable high major “coach” vs a coach who is a former highly successful player. Can he really make that shift?

Ya, they seem to be following the exact same fall from grace blueprint that the football program used too.
