Gerry Staff Predictions…

The most important head coaching skill is ability to judge talent. No one was better than JB. Accusations of not playing hard are pure nonsense. Every player wants to win and wants to play at the next level. Our problems were not lack of effort. We largely had a cast of over rated players and we gave too many minutes to shooting guards who could not shoot. Coaching experience is less important than ability to judge talent. We are in a difficult recruiting position for a multitude of reasons. Obviously, G-Mac is a good judge of talent. I do not expect miracles, but I am happy with G-Mac.
Didn't he say his last recruiting class, the one with Chris Bell, could be his best ever?

If Doty is a starter for SU next year, we will have the same record we had this year.

Depends if he’s a starter and a top 3 option or more of an upperclassman Andy Rautins type. I know he’s been mostly an inside-the-arc player, but his 3pt shot has improved to this point. 34% could be in the cards, which would make him a pretty well-balanced scorer with good size.

He held his own against Duke, just had to chuck some prayers near the end of the game when he was close to dead. Of course, he could continue to be a close to 30% 3pt shooter and struggle to get 2pt looks against consistent ACC competition. Hard to know that now, though, obvs.

He was just talking up his players. JB is no fool. Why do you think Coach K picked him for the Olympics? He knows that Bell was not Melo.

Judging talent determines both who is recruited and distribution of minutes. Our distribution of minutes was disastrous.

JB in 2008 and 2012 was not the JB at the end of his tenure. He got lazy, stubborn and old; like most old men who don't know when to call it quits.

In one post you're saying how great he was, even at the end, and in the next you're kind of recognizing how God awful his scouting and game coaching was at the end.

If he retired even as late as 2021 he'd have a much better reputation. I hope GMac works because the good he did far outweighs the bad, but he's the primary reason we're in the mess. He got us on probation twice because he was disinterested. He was a lazy recruiter after we got sanctioned and needed him fully engaged. He instituted the most boring brand of basketball because he recruited for the zone and didn't really care about developing big men or getting a real point guard. And he's still meddling in the program.

When Gerry and his Siena staff go into the living room of a McDonalds All American what do they have to sell ?? Is it just going to be about how much money they can offer or are they going to be able to promise player development and fulfilling NBA dreams? There's no track record of either. Or do they just for-go HS recruiting and go all in on transfer portal and checkbook ?
Quarter pounder meal? McFlurry? So many options

GMac will need some assistants who can literally cover for him this summer. It appears he is getting ankle replacement surgery. It has a long recovery time. If he doesn't have a set back he should be near 100% six months post op from my research.

Siena wants him to be the next head coach.
I read Siena's fan board yesterday. Some like the idea of Lee as the next coach, some worry that he is too young. I believe he is 29. Some are aiming for an assistant from a bigger program. I even saw Bobby Hurley's name mentioned a few times.

Scouting/recruiting, yes. Game coaching was fine, just looked worse than we were used to because the players were poop.

He’s not running and jumping on it.

He can get around on crutches/knee scooter immediately after surgery. He can put weight on it 4-6 weeks post op (walking boot).

I’m not sure what activities the coaches would have to cover.

Our teams the last few years have not played hard. It's a talent and our lack of belief in that is part of the reason why our team has stunk.
