Gottlieb on SU’s current situation.

JW better be careful because the Post Standard was responsible for getting JB his first probation. They can turn on the program very quickly. JB is lucky he has people like Mike and Donna covering his team. JB needs to remember fair is fair.

seriously...a 1st year coach has Iowa State in the Top 15. They were 2-21 overall, and 0-18 in conference play last year.

I’d pump the brakes a bit on making that guy some great coach. Yes he’s done well so far and beat a couple of real good teams, but he came from UNLV where he was under .500, had a lot of cupcakes early where they started 12-0, and now have lost their last 2 conference games which makes them 2-4 and tied for last.

Not saying he’s a great coach - just pushing back against these silly narratives that it’s so hard to recruit here because of weather and that post-JB, program will inevitably continue its descent into sub-mediocrity

If you’re watch the full segment, Goodman was talking about post-JB and said Syracuse isn’t an easy place to recruit to?!?? Is he serious?? And don’t give me the weather nonsense. It’s colder at every other Big 10 school and no different than most Big East schools. Lansing, Michigan; Ames, Iowa; Omaha Nebraska; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois. All these places are frozen tundra in the winter. And we’re much much closer (half day driving distance) to all the Northeast recruiting hubs, from New England to NYC/NJ, Philly to the DMV. And recruits can play in the largest arena in the country in front of the biggest crowds, with a fan base that travels all over. Goodman says his own daughter might go to Cuse! Guess it can’t be that bad.
The lack of sunshine is a huge differentiation

Goodman didn't explicitly say weather was the reason SU is a tough place to recruit.
He could have meant that it's a dull, decaying city...who knows?

But are weather or the nature of the city really reasons a recruit goes to a particular school?

Isn't it really about the coach, the players, the resources, the level of competition and the way he sees himself fitting in and being able to develop?
Perhaps, also, the distance from home.
Those seem to be the important factors.

So which one(s) is (are) responsible for recent recruiting woes?

It may be unfair to cite just one case...but:
Here's what Dior Johnson said...quote is from Inside the Loud House. Truncation is mine.

Johnson said that he had a “great” relationship with the Orange assistant coaches, “but it wasn’t the same relationship with the whole program...I wanted to have a real close relationship (with) my head coach and have it be like how we are talking on the phone right now. You know, coach calls me, I call him before I come and stuff just building a great relationship and getting to know each other. I don’t know if I had that over there but I don’t want to take anything away from anybody.”

Boom. Perfectly encapsulates part of our recruiting issues.

Didn't we also hear that he was repeatedly texting/calling people at 3/4 AM?

He was 2nd in the MWC his first year and the 2nd was derailed by UNLVs top recruit being involved in a fatal car crash like Henry Ruggs. Did well at South Dakota State and was Hoibergs top assistant. Their fanbase wanted to poach Hoiberg back from Nebby.

We've played well against everyone but Auburn and Duke.

Frustrating season but I just want to focus on the next coach being the best guy we can get vs getting rid of JB ASAP. I am fine with another year for JB. I am not OK if an assistant is hired as the replacement.

And Colgate and Georgetown and VCU.

Yeah I meant to say competitive and not well those 3 were stinkers.

I honestly loathe the Georgetown game every year since no matter how bad they are they outplay us and their players clearly care about the game far more than ours do.

No matter when Boehiem leaves its not going to be a smooth transition ... not like the transition going on at Duke. l didn't see a lot help going out to Hopkins before he left for Washington.

It says a lot that our fans are willing to side with Gottlieb on anything. It says something about where the program is right now but it also says a lot about us.
Are you serious?
Did you even listen to what he said? He was fair and said nothing cheap.

Nothing he said was unreasonable. What should the fanbase do?

Honestly, the whole world other than Boeheim himself and about 10 guys on this board can see that he needs to retire. We all hope JB does the honorable thing and steps down. Retire with dignity.

I hope Julie talks some sense into him after the season is over. I’m sure it’s a touchy topic to address during the season. I think there’s a strong chance he retires after the season is over if Buddy isn’t coming back. If Buddy decides to come back then JB will return and we will just draw out the inevitable for another year.

Yeah but it would be like agreeing with OJ Simpson if he spoke the truth for once.
I’m not agreeing with Gottlieb on anything.

Yeah I think he was trying to consistently FT Gmac at 3 am EST. But in hindsight, Dior was on the west coast time so it might be like 12AM for him lol. Still should be considerate for the time zone difference.
