Houston Postgame

We have a good team!

I just love Syracuse ratcheted up the D for 45 minutes with really great effort & intensity, we controlled what we can control in that aspect, it feels like it’s been half a decade+

I posted in my last summary that FT’s would come & get us in close game… whew, did it ever. I hate that’s the reason when the effort was so good.

I also said that Freeman’s limp reminded me of last year being injured, and here we are.

If we compete this way all season we’ll be players on the national stage, gotta start by bringing it tomorrow.

I think… yes, I think… I really like this team!

P.S. I’ve been hard on Starling, he still can’t hit a FT, but he can get important buckets on this team that nobody else can, he did tonight!

Kyle is growing on me. The guy does so much for a big man. That one possession where his hustle got us two more shots. Loved it. Can play at the rim, go to the rim, pass, block shots, rebound. Effort is off the charts.

Unfortunately, like many big men, the free throws are kryptonite. I can't even watch that sideways hitch before he shoots them.
Also seemed to learn in the fly with that late tap-out. That could be a UH weakness when we see them again in the FF: stalk the tap out offensive rebounds.

When you think about it, everything had to go right for Houston, (not for us) to win.

-our best player is out
-we shoot 12 for 29 from the freethrow line
-Houston got lots of offensive rebounds, but not the kind where you grab it and put it back in. So many of them were long rebounds off the back iron where we really didn’t do anything wrong. The ball bounced their way.
-in a key sequence of the first half Uzan banks a three and gets a lucky roll on the rim for five point swing.
-in the second half, sharp is unconscious with the fall away in the lane and the fadeaway three in back to back possession for another five point swing
-we have the ball with a chance to win at the end but George starts two seconds too late. He was open on the baseline for a layup if Kyle had time to pass it back to him.
-Houston got the early whistle and the late whistle. The rest of the game seemed to be called correctly, but the refs definitely gave them a boost down the stretch.
-Like the Auburn game Houston was not better, just more fortunate.
-Houston made the “tough shots“, our shots were either open looks or layups. We had great ball movement.

I posted a few times that I thought Houston would do just what they did, pull it out down the stretch because they are “winners” and that’s what winners do. But all the people making Houston out to be a juggernaut sold us short, but most mostly made them out to be something they weren’t. (At least not yet)

OK, I’m a believer.

We have a good basketball team.
Another element that we don't quite have yet that will turn us from good to great is the emergence of a guy you can give the ball to with 10 seconds on the shot clock who will either get off a good shot or get fouled.

Arizona is the best team in the country right now. Their bigs will chew up Houston’s big. They can play inside our outside and fast or half court.

too much positivity...we have a gane tomorrow that we must win...get a grip people...these are important games, close losses dont get you in the tourney.
I think almost all of us have acknowledged we need to win the next couple. And none of us are actually playing tomorrow, at least as far as I know.

I was impressed with Starling today. Didn't try to do too much. I think last year he felt like he had to do it all. Also thought he played well on defense. If he can just get his free throw percentage up to 65-70%...
Agreed Based on the box score posted here he had the best +/- of all players at +12. Was a rockfight out there.

They'll never admit it, but I bet some of them breathed a sigh of relief when we lost. Being wrong would be worse.

Probably lighting a cigar right now.

Meanwhile, most of us are encouraged but a little sick to our stomachs.
It's weird...

if you wanna rely on iso...which is an inferior form of the sport, then yeah...give it a player and tell them to make a play by themselves

ball movement and passing is the way to win in this sport...and I dont get why people think that somehow changes late in the game. it doesnt.

17 offensive rebounds and 26 points off those rebounds. We know the free throws. Missed a ton of open 3s. They play this hard Tomm and they smoke Kansas. I think they know they can play with anyone now. That will be one of toughest teams they play all year and they outplayed them

I thought about Kiyan, but I think Red was dug in on going defense first, especially with that run. A little O/D subbing might have worked out, but that’s really just Monday morning quarterbacking.
Yep; I was extremely critical of Red last year, but the offseason and this start to the season has been excellent.
