How does coach k do it?

Bottom line is he is one of the all time greats of college basketball is an upstanding man with unflappable integrity and he has built a program and legacy which is envied all across America. He has an amazing impact on most all his players and although he places value upon winning, he puts people first.
I think Coach K is a good man and a hell of a coach. I also loved that he said JB is probably his best friend in coaching, and that nothing would change with his status on the Olympic team (last month during Bernie situation). That says a lot.

I just don't get the irrational hatred for K and Duke here, but folks are entitled to think whatever they want.

It comes down to jealousy. Coach K runs a clean program and he wins with clean-cut, model citizen players. So because fans have nothing of substance to criticize them on, they have to grasp at straws and come up with stuff like, "ugh, the refs just want them to win" or "Coach K is a jerk who swears too much when the camera is off him."

Also, the jealousy definitely has an underlying racial element to it. College basketball is a sport that is followed in large part by middle class white people. Duke wins national titles with many middle class white kids. So when John Q. Fan sees that a Duke player is athletically and academically their superior in life, it annoys them to death.

Not many people hated Jay Williams, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, Shelden Williams, Nolan Smith, etc.. but people just DESPISE Christian Laettner, Wojo, J.J. Redick, Greg Paulus, Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler, the Plumlees, etc. For example, I went to a Duke @ Maryland game in 2009. The stuff I heard coming out of people's mouths about Scheyer and Singler was beyond inappropriate, but I never heard a single negative word about Nolan Smith, an All-American.

In conclusion, I hate Duke and I love the fact they lost tonight.

That is one very clever/funny post. Congrats.

Coach K backed up JB with some nice support comments to the media when JB really needed it during the BF fiasco. He didn't have to say anything.

I guess I meant it more in the sense that his players hardly if ever get in any type of off-the-court trouble, or are ever in any type of academic trouble.

Was your post in reference to the Corey Maggette funny business back around 1999? I honestly had forgotten about that when I made my post.

Agree and yes I meant more about the Maggette stuff, the cars and the rumored jobs/homes for parents.

I hate Duke probably more than most people but I never hated K. Guy is a winner and he usually gets the maximum out of every team he has coached. I would have killed for a guy like Battier to play for Syracuse.

I do think however that this team has some concerns that as a fan I would be very worried about and I would be very surprised (and very impressed) to see them get past the sweet 16.

I like Coach K, and I like his assistant coaches (all of whom are former Duke players with whom I hung out in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics). I just don't get the irrational hatred for K and Duke here, but folks are entitled to think whatever they want. If these guys were SU players and coaches, this board would be having a lovefest with them.

I stopped hating duke in 2010. Didn't watch a second of their game, but was incredibly happy when I found out they beat Butler.

He's the best coach in history and I don't think there's even an argument about that. 4 titles in three distinct eras is amazing.

I get why people dislike him and Duke though. Laettner, Reddick, Shav, the list goes on and on for incredibly annoying players they have had over the years. Dukie V who, for years, couldn't finish a sentence without a noun, verb and Coach K. The way Coach K talks about his players in a creepy (innocent) manner sometimes. A holier than thou attitude, perpetuated by the media. The petitioning of the NCAA to remove his 1995 losses from his records, and taking that year off in general.

His longevity, like JB and JC, is amazing. We have seen so many.coaches sputter to the finish line and falling to mediocrity. There are arguments that these 3 are the best they've ever been, and that's saying a lot.

Blame Vitale. I respect K and Duke; I have a good friend on the faculty there. However, they should not be treated as if they were cut from a different cloth than everyone else (including by the refs).

Coach K is hated by many North Carolina fans. They feel when he took over the Duke program he showed general disrespect for their coach (Dean Smith). Don't know if it is true or not but that is an opinion that I have heard. Also, Duke oozes that "preppy" arrogance. I like their current team but if Rivers played for Boeheim, he would be spending a lot of time on the bench. He is a "me first" kind of player who Coach K lets do his thing.

If we're going with stereotypes, isn't that exactly the sort of player who'd log big minutes for Boeheim?

I don't hate Duke at all. In fact, I have a harder time with your post because I cannot understand why people here so irrationally hate Duke. Clean program...smart kids...play hard. What is it that you hate? I would love to see someone spell that out.

I have been fortunate to live a lot of places around the country and I have never seen a place hate Duke as much as this board. It's weird.

Coach K runs a clean program...

Or he hasn't been caught yet. There has to be an explanation for Quin Snyder. He had to learn that stuff from somewhere.

Not so sure about clean as I mentioned in another post. A very close friends nephew went to Duke and was an academic "adviser" for many of the bball players. Believe most of what you hear as rumor. It may be different now but the rumors in the Brand and Davis days were more fact than fiction.

I live in LA. Went to a sports bar out here..when Duke was losing in the tourney to Villanova a couple years back, the place was going nuts. A Duke chant broke out...must've been all SyracuseFan.com posters

I'm jealous of their success, often with inferior teams. I don't like their luck. I don't like that in 2005 they can go 25-5 and win the ACC Tournament and get the #1 seed while we go 27-6 and win the Big East Tournament and get the #4 seed. I hate that they leapfrogged us and took the third #1 seed from us in 2010 and then got the easiest bracket when we got the fourth #1 and got shipped out West to play a hugely underseeded Butler team.

I hate how their games are officiated (e.g., Baylor Elite Eight game in 2010). I hate that the infrequent calls against their players are met with an inordinate amount of eye rolling, whining, and gesticulating. I hate that defensive flopping seems to be coached into their whole team.

Their frequent Raleigh/Greensboro NCAA opportunities don't bother me; if Syracuse wants similar treatment, ask officials in Albany, Buffalo, New York, Newark, and Nassau County to bid on more games. The winning itself doesn't bother me, either. Carolina's had a similar couple decades, and I enjoy them well enough.

Duke makes more of its opportunities than our team does, and they often do it with somewhat dishonest on-court play and the head-scratching help of refs and the selection committee. Good for them, but I don't like them.

I'll reserve the right to truly hate Duke when we actually start playing them in the ACC. I think we've only played them two or three times in the 30 years I've been following Syracuse bball, so it's hard for me to "hate" them.

I'm looking forward to future Duke/Syracuse battles. It should be fun.

This is pretty much were I am at with Duke.

Hate about Duke:

- flopping players
- extremely generous treatment from the refs
- Cameron crazies with popped collars and scripted (and still lame) cheers
- ESPN's fixation with them
- CBS's fixation with them
- The pollsters fixation with them ex. loss that would drop us 7 spots will drop them 2 or 3
- selection committee giving them ideal locations and realitively easy roads to the sweet 16.

None of that is Syracuse fan specific though, and is widely shared sentiment. It's far from just this board. It's alot of the same reasons I dislike Kansas except with D Bag fans. Their fans just reek of having a sense of entitlement.

I do, however, respect Duke. I respect the winning tradition and can't really fault them for taking advantage of the breaks they are given. You can respect somebody and not have to like them.

As I get a bit older I appreciate Coach K a bit more. He's like JB in alot of ways, main one being it will be quite awhile until we someone accomplish close to what he has again. Also, after hearing him on numerous talk radio shows, he's extremely intelligent but also has a great sarcastic sense of humor that makes him hard for me to hate.

But yeah, I took great joy in them losing last night. So did the UConn, Pitt, and Maryland hoops fans that I share an office with though.

"Flopping players"...I don't think Duke flops more than anyone else. And they pay harder than most.
"Extremely generous treatment from the refs"...that's pretty subjective. I think Pitt gets more generous treatment from the refs than Duke.
"Popped collars"...ok, so you hate preppy people. That's legit.
"ESPN's fixation with them"...they win a lot. They deserve it. ESPN has historically been fixated with SU basketball compared to other schools. We benefit from this (although I would argue that ESON was in part built on the backs of the early BE and therefore we are entitled to it), but still.
"CBS' fixation with them" CBS is fixated with all teams that win. Win and we can be fixated on as well.
"pollsters fixation"...I tend to agree with this, but it doesn;t make me hate them. It makes me respect them even more. Duke has earned the benefit of the doubt. IMO, we have earned just about what we get (which I think is pretty good, even and fair). Consistency will do a lot for a program and I'm not talking about 20-win seasons.
"Selection Committee"...agreed.

As for their fans having a sense of entitlement: who cares? They are good. They win. And they win championships. Compare that to Rutgers and their sense of entitlement and tell me who has earned it more.

With the exception of that 2nd paragraph, I think that's the best explanation (most rationale?) this forum has seen in the 8+ yrs of this argument. FWIW, I tend to agree with everything else you said.

Only difference is it doesn't make me hate them, it makes me want the benefit of the doubt (if you will) that they seem to get.

Apparently the results of the NCAA investigation into Corey Magette are in. :bang:
