Dino Babers is our first black head football coach. It's actually a good thing that people aren't discussing that- it's a sign of progress that that isn't considered remarkable. But it needs to be noted.

We were one of the schools that advanced the cause of integration back in the 30's, 40's and 50's by using black players like Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, Bernie Custis, Avatus Stone, (all of whom were black quarterbacks), then the three 44's- Jim Brown, the first black Heisman winner, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little. We had John Brown, Art Baker, John Mackey and Jim Nance and others. It wasn't altruistic: the use of black players enabled this mid-size private school in the snow capital of the country to become a national power. One of the reasons we later slipped is that because of that, our rivals started doing the same thing. And it wasn't all smooth sailing, If you read Jim Browns auto-bio and Ernie Davis' bio and read about well the black player's revolt. But those racial conflicts happened here because we had more than once race here - Alabama didn't. (Although 'race' is a poor word: as Edward James Olmos said "We have many cultures but just one race- the human race").

It's about time we had a black head coach. And now that I've said it, I won't be saying it again. Now he's just our football coach and hopefully will have a great career here. Progress is wonderful. :)

As a black man I appreciate this post. Like you said it doesnt have to be said but its great to know that people appreciate what is happening. Its starting to be more common for african americans to hold high positions not only in football but in other fields. He is just another football coach but he is also a walking billboard. He is a constant reminder that you can be whatever you desire to be. Dont let anyone tell you you cant. I hope that has a long sustainful impact on the black players as well as the white players. On futher note I dont care if your black white yellow or purple, just win some ball games!!!

I'll take it a step further and say that I'm excited to have a black head coach because I think that can give us a competitive edge in recruiting. If / when Dino is doing big things here at Cuse it will further cement our position of being at the forefront of social progress and kids will respond to that.

I've been around the NYC recruiting scene for awhile and I always noticed that SU never leveraged TGD as the only (or 1 of 2 black AD's in ACC). Kids never really even met him during visits & I always thought that was a mistake to not use every angle possible to land some of the big fish.

Here in NYC we just had the first black head coach win the PSAL championship as Grand St Campus beat Erasmus Hall at Yankee Stadium. It's crazy to think only white guys have won in NYC of all places but kids really responded to that rally cry and I believe it can only help our recruiting going forward.

#DINOROCKS!

We should have hired a black coach after P was let go. I've been leaning this way for years. About time.

Yeah, i'm happily surprised to not have heard a single "he's black" comment.

And he was even the leader in the clubhouse for a week.

Well said!

This whole situation has just so much GOOD in it.

You can't just hire a black coach to hire a black coach. I think Donnie Henderson was 1 of the finalists that year, and i dont believe he has done anything since.

I think it's because all the myths have been shattered. Black QBs have won the biggest prize in the game. Black coaches have won the biggest prize in the game. What else do you want them to prove?

Well, I was speaking in general.

I meant a qualified black coach.

My two favorite football teams now have black coaches (SU and Steelers) and I couldn't be any more thrilled to have both men at the helm. I admire both of them.

Meh. Never thought of it.
me either.

SU needs to put the marquee at the top of the forum home page and put that up on the billboard on 690W near the Teall Ave exit. Promote the hell out of a change in direction for football and get people excited about it. I remember when Marrone did his halftime speech at the SU/Villanova (?) bball game, Babers needs to be introduced to the basketball crowd too.

It shows how far we've come as a society and how much things have changed over the past two decades that the more important factor is correctly about qualifications rather than skin color.

Winning is obviously the whole point of the fiing and hiring coaches at every level/position, in Syracuse BUT let me express something about how we will become winners having seen most of the great RBs this university has put on the field, I love the ground games as much as the passing game and I can only hope that the new offense will be balanced in its approach to the offense. Shafer was a defensive minded coach and it showed. We had reasonably strong defenses and consistently poor offensive production which was the responsibility laid at his feet as the HC.

SWC, if I may suggest, you might want to consider a 2-3 page book report for HC Babers that chronicles SU's early history with black athletes. I am pretty sure he's aware of the 44s, but honestly, to me at least, its way more impressive and inspiring that the school that he now represents was so ahead of the times in first half of the 20th century. And, to be fair, SU had its low moments later into the 60s and 70s, and he should be aware of those too. But the scope of Syracuse football history is so much greater than 44. That frustrates me at times.

I just think our HC might appreciate the totality of the story and your time/effort to compose it.

Regardless of race/ethnicity, the best man for the job got the job and that is the way it should be. It shouldn't have any determination in today's society. Unbelievably thrilled to have Dino on The Hill. We have a lot of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, can't wait to see what HCDB and staff can do with them! Great hire ADMC!!!

Yes of course its more than the fantastic 44s. He says we need to wait for season two of his offense to be fully in place and showing off his style. I think we see a bit of it early in 2016 He should like what he has in place already.
