J’Onre Reed transferring to USC

So it sounds like we have a guy Hornsby ready to step in per other posts but what's his story? Has the guy even played any center in college? Next year will be his first shot? Seems to me if we are losing both our 1st and 2nd string that's a somewhat major issue if our only guy is unproven? Gotta think we would fish the portal for at least competition.

I am going to be a debbie downer and say I am very skeptical of any upperclassman on the OL that was on the roster this year and didn't get playing time (Hornsby, Enrique) ever being able to contribute. We rotated a lot on a line that was already not very good. That leaves me curious as to what the plan is though. At least Joe Cruz was very good by year end, thought he was our best IOL the final few games.

There is a scenario where they had two senior centers, and had an opportunity to redshirt Hornsby and keep him in reserve.

He already redshirted in 2021

2020 - Covid
2021 - DNP at Delaware State (redshirt)
2022 - Grambling - Freshman Year
2023 - Grambling - Sophomore Year
2024 - Syracuse - Junior Year

Ok relax evryone he was almost last in blocking and graded 14th in conference. Thats terrible. He needs to be gone. the sr blocked way better hurt or not. He will be a Mac or less kid. Who cares.

Graded as our worst starting offensive lineman. I just don't think it's a huge loss. Did some good things but just overall was an average to below average Center the entire year. We'll be okay.

Gotta take into account that Hornsby was also behind Josh Ilaoa who was a 5th year senior. So he was behind 2 upperclassmen Centers. Doesn't mean he can't play. Just wasn't really a scenario where he would get a chance unless there was an emergency at the Center position.

May be true. Not getting a warm fuzzy thinking the solution is already in house because I would think they would have gotten some run if so

The center is also the key to most plays even if not blocking. We have no idea how well he controlled that part of the non physical game.

If we don't get a transfer, the depth at center is Hornsby then 2025 recruit Stewart, then anybody who cross trains at center?

Is there another center on the roster?

He could but I don’t see him having much leverage here. I don’t know for sure but I could easily see this be a situation where we’re OK he’s moving on as we didn’t expect him to be back. I’ll wait and see where he ends up.
Good point. I would imagine the staff had planned on him being out of eligibility, so they have their guy, whether he is on the roster now or not.

I hate that people use PFF grades as the be all, end all when they widely vary, especially at OL.

He wasn't perfect but he was solid. He wasn't one of the worst centers in the ACC. I don't buy that. And if he said he was coming back this board would be singing a different tune.

Now everyone wants to bash him because he's leaving.

You don't have to buy it, but that's just reality. The running game was terrible this year and part of the reason was because the interior offensive line play was subpar. So the numbers matched what we saw for the most part. He was an average pass protector as well. Is what it is. Sure, it would've been nice to have him back. But it's not bashing him to say that it's not a killer loss.

it is OK to fill positions of need with guys in the program who have worked their way up sometimes it's not always going to be a step back. not every perceived position of need needs to be a portal guy.

exactly

if they aren’t legit prospects they’d be in the portal. They aren’t keeping guys to be nice

If he was so bad, and Hornsby couldn't beat him out, how bad is Hornsby?

I don't think Hornsby is bad at all, and I don't think J'Onre was bad. Sure, we didn't run the ball great but there were also plenty of plays where he made a crucial block.

We'll see how big of a loss it is next year.
