Jay Wright Retiring

I think there's a lot truth to this. Got to look at players as 1 year rentals. If they are good and keep them longer, great.
If they portal expect it so you are not shocked. Don't take it personal.
Coaches have buyouts. They are not married to the school (exception JB) and their players.
Players have the portal. They are not married to the school or coach. Install a system that can easily be adopted by players, acquire as much talent as quickly as possible by pounding the portal, or grabbing 1 and dones if so lucky. That's the formula now.
i think another layer is that the best coaches were the ones that accumulated good rosters from year to year...thats how JB built his good teams and thats how a lot of coaches did it.

Now, its accumulating reputation that keeps you getting the one and dones...but different players year to year...

i guess it could be coincidence to see wright, k, roy williams all go out around the same time...

I think as Syracuse is concerned, JB is still trying to adjust his old tried and true formula to the current reality...might be partially why he's going for 3/4 star players (that might stay longer)...and didnt fill up his bench last season...and not going after 1 year rental players. its not a bad thought...aim a little lower on talent and get a group together for 3/4 years...it kinda worked for villanova and uva (although they still had good talent...just not quite good enough to leave early)...its a fine line and JB hasnt quite struck the perfect balance with it.

i think the mismatch between JBs formula of how hes always done it...the seismic shifts in the NCAABB and how those two dont align as they did before ...are where a lot of SU fans get frustrated...and why the program has gone through a dip lately...

For the coaches that have the model of building a team up over several seasons...its hard now. no matter how good they are or have been. Even though the Dukes, kentuckys Villanovas etc still have best access to talent...they cant necesarily build a team the way they used to...its a weird era.

Shocking. But, understandable. You don’t know how much time you have. He’s got the resources to just live well for the duration. Good for him. Wonder if he’ll get into broadcasting, or if it’s a complete retirement.

I wonder if the portal and/or NIL plays a role in these big name coaches calling it quits, happening in football too, I was shocked when Bronco Mendenhall retired from UVA, so glad his top assistants are now at Cuse

I would be shocked if its not at least a part of it. Things are changing, and I'm not sure its for the better for college athletics. This one is a shocker!

Nah, he'll go crazy in retirement...

One year off for Wright to miss the competition and then he'll take over a formerly great program in a sleepy town in upstate New York.
Colgate?

Great coach and seems like a great guy too . He will be missed in the college ranks and hoping it’s nothing health related for him nor a family member. He’s young enough to take a breather if he ever does decide to recharge and return to the college ranks too.

There’s rumors it’s a family issue but not him personally.

Jay Wright and Villanova were the biggest winners of the Cuse-in-ACC decline. Very interested to see how this plays out.
Disagree.

Yeah, it must make them ask themselves whether cheating is legal or not now, and there was already a fine line around that question.

Now, nobody knows the answers -- at least not until somebody like Western Michigan gets the Death Sentence for NIL violations. LOL

Wow what a surprise. That's how you do it though. Just rip the bandaid off and get it over with. Talk about doing it right. Made millions...retire from coaching...probably will be invited into ESPN occasionally to talk hoops...young enough to enjoy stuff for years to come. Good for him.

He'll probably take a year off and then come back to replace Raf as a color man on the Big East broadcasts, or maybe break him in by having him be part of their studio team.

I think he'll be a natural on TV, like a better version of Fran Fraschilla.
