JB and a Plan ???

I am now thinking the "plan" JB spoke of has nothing to do with selecting or predetermining his successor. It is only about the timing of his departure. That there is an understanding between him and JW on when he will retire. As for hiring a successor, that is another plan altogether, at least I hope so.
Is the timing tied to performance? Meaning if this continues you are out next year, if it improves you can stay on longer???

I am really curious to see how they recruit for class of 23. They are trying to get 6 in 22 almost as if 23 will be a wasted cycle.

When he a kid verbally commits, the recruiting sites get interviews with him, wonder what will be said then if theres nothing official from the AD's office.

My fear is that this becomes a distraction, and a side show from the product on the floor.

If JB did coach here through year 50 and averaged 25-10, he could end up #1 all time. Does he care enough for the record and for an even 50 years?

Who honestly thinks we are still a “Top 10” program?
Lots of industry people think SU is still a top 10 program in terms of brand, media attention, national exposure, fan base, alums that show up everywhere SU plays, home attendance records, the Dome, and history. There are people who post on this board who analyze this kind of stuff for a living.

Either you have totally Orange colored glasses or you are still living in the early 90s
We are a top 10 program, its not really debatable.

SU has one of the top 10 largest fanbases, and has for years, per the most reputable research firm that surveys for such things.

SU is top three in attendance.

SU has elite facilities.

SU is located in a fertile recruiting radius.

SU is in the top college basketball conference, historically.

SU will pay to land a premiere head coach.

Agree 144%, across the board.

Jim Boeheim was an assistant promoted to head coach. So was Roy Danforth. Fred Lewis is the last basketball coach we've had who was an outsider. Marc Guley was promoted from the bench, as was Lou Andreas.

Dino Babers was an outsider who had bene a head coach. He's had 5 losing season in 6 years. Scott Shafer, Doug Marrone, Greg Robinson, Paul Paqualoni and Frank Maloney had only been assistants. Pasqualoni and Shafer were internal hires and Marrone had played here. Coach Mac, Ben and Biggie Munn had been small college coaches. Vic Hanson and Chick Meehan were alums and internal hires. Frank O'Neill and the Jones boys started Hall of Fame careers here, their first head coaching jobs. Ossie Solem is the only guy who had ever been a major college head coach before he came here.

Both the Roy Simmons and John Desko were assistants here when hired to coach the lacrosse team. Before them Laurie Cox, who started the SU lacrosse program in 1916, had been a professor at SU and a landscape architect. Gary Gait had starred here and was coaching the women's team.

Yes, this situation is different. I'm just pointing out that this school doesn't usually go outside the program for a coach unless things have already collapsed here.

Two thoughts

With all the man to man chatter we know that’s not a JB idea but guessing that both Red and Gerry would like to mix it up so JB told his ‘successor’ sure we can begin that transition

Second

6-7 man freshman class is not norm in current environment but it does help create a foundation for ‘successor’ who can coach them all season and talk about future with 2023 recruiting in flux

Honestly impressed by some of the top 10 program people. I thought we were a more pessimistic bunch than that.

Personally, I’d say we’re closer to top 20-30 at this point than top 10 but to each their own. I also think the industry consensus would generally say top 20-30 as well. I think you’d be hard pressed to find people placing us inside the top 10.

The Athletic recently did a survey with 60 coaches, assistants, agents, etc. and we were not among the 17 programs to receive a single vote.

Well, if this is a master plan, its pretty ing stupid to say it publicly

Jim has said stuff publicly that would be best unsaid for forever...

It's no surprise if he puts his foot in his mouth on his retirement as well.

I think he’s going to grab the mic at the end of the Miami game and say

“Thanks for coming out tonight to see my final home game. And by the way we’re turning down the NIT bid. Hope I see you all at Heids.”
You have to be .500 to make the NIT

That’s what we were from 84 to 2014. If we are laying down and accepting worse that is not acceptable.

I'm struggling to see how it isn't Autry considering he has been most successful on the recruiting trail.

He's back on w Infante and Scabilia and just talking in platitudes

I dont know how serious I can still take JB

have been putting this out there repeatedly - it might not be the case, but I think it's def something to consider, with how the class was put together and the timing

Gave you a like. I'm just going to say one thing about the 6-7 man class:

What that means now is likely half will be gone after two years, if not more. None of those guys, outside of if we get Mintz, is an ESPN 100 guy. If we are to get back on track, they all need to be recruited over. Every one of them.

I know that sounds harsh, but it's what we need. Those guys should not be the foundation. Maybe one or two of them will stick and play above ranking or find a good role, but I wouldn't bank on any more than that.

I tend to think we’ll never get back to being that level again but I do have some hope that we can improve from what we are at the moment. This has obviously been a relatively bad stretch for the program. I’m hoping once the successor is in place, our recruiting will improve a bit and we might try some new things tactically speaking but we’ll see.

I definitely expect us to promote from within or being Hop back. I’d be very surprised if we hire someone that isn’t connected to the program.
