JB on McC

What are you talking about?

Russ Smith got it way worse from Rick Pitino at Louisville. As a caller pointed out.

Maybe you would have brought him milk and cookies, tucked him into bed, read him a bedtime story, and gave him a kiss goodnight. n

Russ Smith didn't get it worse. What, Rick Pitino said that he was a "distracted young man"...as a senior? Calling out Russ Smith and saying he shouldn't be reading comments on Twitter?

Apples and oranges. Not remotely the same thing.

Speaking of Oranges. Did Paul Harris ?

JB is one of the last of his kind still coaching. The tough love approach is his style. Why is anyone shocked?

He is being 100% honest. Our society today is too soft.
Like Crean getting Sweet 16 rings for his team?

Paul Harris did get it almost as bad as Chris, and he ended up a shell of what he could have been... and left early to get away from here.

Way to completely ignore the point you were actually making by speaking in more vague "hey someone else got yelled at once!" terms.

A caller brought up Russ Smith/Rick Pitino. And UPFR guys agreed with him and took to task those getting on Coach for his criticism.

Paul's issues extended well beyond JB. And it is impossible to know if he was a shell of what he could have been. An undersized forward without a great shot or handle doesn't seem to translate to the NBA. He had a nice career here though in spite of his domestic violence issues and random trips to Buffalo.

Don't think I'd use Paul Harris to prove your point.

Someone bringing up Russ Smith, and a radio guy thinking, "Hey, that's someone else who got criticized by his coach!" doesn't mean it automatically equates.

Yeah and for every Paul Harris (whose issues went far beyond JB criticism) I can show you Rak, fab, dion, rony, etc. those dudes got it way worse than Harris and cmac and improved immensely.

Let's be clear:

1) Rick Pitino said that Russ Smith, as a senior, was a distracted kid who shouldn't be paying attention to social media.

2) Jimmy B said that Chris McCullough, as a freshman, was basically a disaster who should never be mentioned as an NBA draft pick this year.

That's not what I'd call "Russ Smith [getting it] way worse."

But wouldn't this make CM just want to leave? I feel like it's only in the movies where the coach comes down hard on the kid and his reaction is to work harder to win the coach's approval. I don't think Boeheim has some plan to make these remarks in order to get CM to work harder or stay another year. I think it's just Boeheim being snarky.

I guess I'm in the camp that thinks what JB wasn't that bad. I mean, he's essentially saying Chris isn't playing well, which Chris already knows. The fact he said it at a press conf. probably makes Chris feel bad, but probably not worse than he already feels after hugely underperforming in the last several, *nationally-televised* games. I mean, if his ego is hurt, I think his actual play on the court did the most damage, not what coach said about it afterward.

If I'm CM, JB's comments wouldn't make me want to leave at all. They'd make me think "hey, me being a high first-round draft pick this year may not actually be a foregone conclusion. Hmmmm. Gut check?"

I suppose the question is, why get on him in that fashion specifically when he was playing pretty well? It hasn't seemed to have sparked him yet - so you go to the well again? Maybe this time Chris will really get it...

Not that last night was all that harsh tbh, except perhaps in the context of the prior statements. His numbers at the time of the first press conference were pretty good, and didn't seem to warrant the level of criticism being heaped upon him - because of an article Chad Forde wrote.

I still think it's the same as a teacher or professor calling up some kid in front of everyone to announce that the class genius got an . I'm just not sure how many people that motivates - it seems more about embarrassing the kid than anything else. Again, I always try to qualify it with the fact we don't witness practices, but it still doesn't change my opinion that it seemed a tad much at the time.

So the thing you're hoping for is that Chris has a gut check and starts putting up the same type of production that he was putting up before the first time he was bashed? I suppose that's a lofty goal, kind of, to get back where you kind of were...and if he does, do we do it all over again to ensure more gut checks will follow?

I don't think he's using the press conferences after games to motivate anyone. He's just answering the questions and giving his honest opinion of all the players. He's obviously frustrated with the play of the team. He used the term "we" yesterday when talking about getting chris ready. He said he played great to start the year and now can't understand how they can't get him to play better. It's not like chris is the only player he is giving an honest assessment of. It seems like what they are working on in practice isn't showing up in games and that has to be frustrating for any coach.

When I first read this thread I thought it was a lot worse till I actually watched the presser.

When posters have to point out that chris took the ball to the basket and was aggressive as a positive then you know he's not playing well. If that's all we can say as a positive it's not good. I know I expected him to be more consistent by this time of the season and I'm sure JB did as well. You can point out some good plays, but their are more negative plays than positive plays at this point. 1-7 from the field and 1-4 from the line isn't anything to be overly excited about. At what point do we just realize he is what he is this year? I also really hope what JB is saying in the pressers doesn't affect him at all because that would be pretty weak. If it was coming from an outsider then I could see him being upset, but from his coach shouldn't really bother him.

This^^^. I wonder how many people actually watched the whole presser. JB specifically said that Chris played GREAT at the beginning of the year, and now they can't him to play bad. That is all he said. His tone was complimentary and he basically said that the coaching staff was confused why he has dropped off so much. His main point of the press conference was that one or two players have to "get it going" for them to keep winning. Chris was the most obvious choice, Gbinije needs to be more consistent, Trevor needs to finish at the rim, etc.

Gut checks for everyone!!

Yeah, you raise good points and of course I was speculating about JB's motives, so who knows. Whether JB was calculating in his press comments or not, it seems like he regards CM as some sort of challenge...he knows the talent is in there (he's said so) and seems to be trying to figure out how to get it out.

Agreed - it's hard for us to know much. We watch a JB presser and try to figure out his relationship with Chris...not much to really go on. I think you either feel like that motivates a kid, or alienates him. The timing with his drop-off in play just makes it all the more interesting I guess in a way.

That's about all it boils down to - and our impressions are probably mostly colored as well by how we think we would react or reacted in whatever situation we can compare it to in our own lives. Jerk boss calling you out in a meeting, teacher, coach - whatever fits.

Jim needs to shut his mouth when it comes to putting his own players down. Im a huge fan but he is starting to come across as a mean spirited person

I'm not going to address JB's comments in his presser; everyone is going to have a different take on what is acceptable.

All I can say is that I went back and watched the two games in NYC and it is readily apparent that something is HORRIBLY wrong with Chris. He's a totally different player right now. He looked great scoring 20 points with 9 rebounds against a pretty good Iowa team. I don't think I've ever seen a player go from 14 ppg/9 rbg to 4 ppg/5 rbg so quickly.

It is very clear to me that the kid has a ton of talent, despite how bad he's played for the last month. If this team wants to have any level of success, it needs to figure out a way to get him going again. I wish I knew what the answer is...

this is not true. His stock is going nowhere. He will be a top 20 pick, just like he was before the season started. It doesnt matter what the casual SU fan thinks, he is taylor made for the NBA. Hes gone.

You know nothing. He will not even get drafted much less in first round unless his play improves dramatically.
