Jesse returning

I sure hope this is true... we really need this scholarship open so we can be aggressive and add an experienced guard or land Mintz. That fact that we’re pursuing Mintz, tells me there should be at least one scholarship available...without knowing who would transfer up to this point.
Chaz is not a walk on, if no one leaves there's one spot left. My guess is Swider returns.

That might be Swider.

We are still Syracuse. That hasn't changed, yet. People still look at the tournament first and foremost. And we haven't been the disappointment there that we have been in the regular season that we have been over the last number of years.
When we make the tourney…which isn’t automatic anymore

We will have spots. Mintz probably isn't coming and expect a departure or 2.

He might not be technically but everyone knows he wasn’t recruited and got the schollie because we had 1 open and because of dad. It doesn’t matter though unless he leaves because he wants to play

Or, that he’d go the “explore the draft” route, and then choose to go elsewhere if his prospects weren’t what he’d hoped to hear.
See: Q.

I’m absolutely thrilled Jesse is returning!!

But - let’s not act like he couldn’t have gone to pretty much any other program and started,
and be playing somewhere that’s ranked all year long, a shoo-in to play in the Tournament, and not have a crotchety old coach who throws him under the bus in every presser.
Yes, and maybe he’s the kind of young man who finishes what he starts. Who makes commitments and sticks with them. Maybe he’s the kind of young man who would rather help create success than just climb on the bus. Maybe he isn’t soft. Maybe a coach with harsh expectations doesn’t make him want to curl up in a fetal position. Maybe he takes it as a challenge and motivation. Maybe the coach knows these things about him. Maybe he is the kind of young man who more often we raised the next generation to be, instead of the selfish, “me” kids we see flexing and preening in highlights all the time now. Oh, but why not turn some good news into a gratuitous bash of one of the truly great coaches in the history of the sport.

Well, that turned quickly.

On a 1/28/22 Orange Nation radio interview Billy Owns said that Chaz wants to get some playing time and may look to play on another team after this season.

I’m guessing he may be fine going down to DII or a much lower level program if he finds a spot.

Players don’t automatically get 4 year scholarships.
The NCAA passed a rule in 2018 allowing schools to offer 4 year scholarships as part of the recruiting process.

These scholarships aren’t automatically 4 years, most are year to year. I highly doubt Chaz and JBA were given 4 year scholarships.

Boeheim isn’t going to pull a Jim Calhoun and take random scholarship away.

However JBA and Chaz if were told their scholarships wouldn’t be renewed could be done by having the talk and they get to call the shot.

I wouldn’t get rid of any player just to get rid of a player but we should be looking to upgrade the roster.

Chino Obohok was here 3 years on scholarship and played 156 minutes total.

JBA has been here 3 years and played 112 minutes total aka 3 Buddy Boeheim games for context.

We need more from our roster.

Chaz is a thank you to Billy.

We should be looking to add as much talent and experience in the portal as we can.

In 2015 power 5 schools enacted a rule requiring athletic scholarships to be 4 years and cannot be revoked for performance reasons.

I think it is a sport to sport decision, not a player to player decision. Could be wrong.

My quick look says that teams can opt into do that, but are not required to do so.

This is 100% not true. It’s not required.
Then schools wouldn’t put walkons on scholarships and tie up them for 4 years.

Schools can offer 4 year scholarships but it is not required.

Google power 5 athletic scholarships.

I am not going to give you any info if Syracuse wanted to move on from JBA they could.
It's possible that by entering the portal last year and returning he gave up his full scholarship and they gave him a 1 year. Seems to be a grey area in the rules.

Billy has an older son, Lavail who played college ball at Mansfield University in PA, a D2 school over 10 years ago. I don’t think Chaz would have an issue finding a spot at all somewhere.

I wouldn't run them off. I think (know) JBA wants to play. He won't do that at Syracuse. Chaz I think would stay and that is fine.
I thought he acquitted himself decently in the minutes he got. Now he knows (like Frank) what it takes to play, let’s see his off season.

I hope Frank is back, too, because you can count on a couple BS calls every game in the ACC.
Frank is huge. Jessie isn't able to play forty minutes without fouling out, especially if JB plays some man. Frank and Jessie might give us the best two center combination in the ACC next year. It might be our biggest strength. Frank could start his final two years at SU. I think he stays. He likes Syracuse.
