Our coaches thing he is the best athlete on the team.
That’s nice, but can he not turn the ball over, finish, or shoot? I assume that would be at forward.

I get the feeling he’s looked great in practice, but has yet to put it together in a game.

11 points a game while playing injured is "trash"?
How few freshman guards have we ever had who scored double figures as freshmen?
Ten, maybe, in the last 50 years? It might be less than that.
10 in the last 50 years?

Joe Girard
Judah Mintz
Tyus Battle
Malachi Richardson
Tyler Ennis
Jonny Flynn
Eric Devendorf
Gerry McNamara
Jason Hart
Lawrence Moten

Off the top of my head, not one of them played for a 3 conference win team. Plenty of guys who were freshman that if they got 25+ minutes on a bad team that could’ve scored 10+ a game.

Seems fair to say Starling was kinda bad last year. 46.5% EFG, 48% True shooting. Not many assists. He didnt turn it over a lot, which is a trend for ND.

Now, he was a freshmen guard on a bad team. Tough spot to be in. And he was a very highly rated recruit, which I don't think you want to write off. And he was a freshmen. (Did I mention that?) But what he actually did on the court seems kinda bad to me. Doesn't mean he will be bad next season, but it doesnt make it not true

I am not saying it. I want a proven winner as a guard. I'm just telling you what they think.

You said it better than me, but this.

Sub 65% free throw shooter, sub 30% from three, more turnovers than assists, rebounding non existent, not even a steal a game.

Sorry, awful year, Joe never had a year even close to that.

Jesse good riddance, Joe was awful, though amirite?
Legit question. I’m just wondering your thoughts. Do you think Red should have tried to convince Joe to return next season? I personally think we needed to take a risk and rip the band aid off and get a lot more athletic and better defensively (though we will miss his shooting a lot). And we weren’t going to do that with Joe on the roster. JJ and Chance have much higher upside and long term potential. I think the plan was also that Judah would return, which may still happen.

He isn’t a good defender, did you watch them play any other games than the ones he played against us?

Averaged 11 points on a team that won 11 games, three ACC wins…….
ND had zero rim protection last year and it affected their defense. There’s no reason that JJ can’t play defense. He has size and athleticism.

I love his energy on both sides of the ball, not saying I wouldn’t take him over Symir because I would.

If he starts, I’ll be rooting for him to take us to the next level.

I personally think he played with more effort than anyone else on the roster last season.
And JB really liked Copeland too. So both the old guy and the younger coaches think he has very high upside.

I think it was time for Joe to go somewhere where he could play a role he’s suited for.

If he would’ve been ok being a 20 minute guy, more minutes if he’s hot, then yes a mistake, realistically I don’t think he takes that role here, maybe elsewhere he does, but not here.

JJ and Chance do have higher upside, but they lack proving anything at this level, they could be great, I don’t know, but they both need a substantial jump in production if we’re going to be even a bubble team. Don’t forget, if we’re not going to upgrade at forward and stand pat, lose production at center then we either better be elite at defense or JJ and Chance need to make up the production of Mintz, Joe and Jesse, I don’t see that happening in any stretch of my imagination.

There is a lot more work to be done, to help JJ and Chance be successful here.

You keep saying that. I hope you are right but I fear you are not.
So are you hearing that we’re talking to some big man transfers? And you just don’t like the ones that you’re hearing were involved with?

My feeling is that Judah will return and be the PG alongside JJ, but only time will tell on that. Chance gets time at small forward.

I don’t think anyone knows who Red is involved with. He’s keeps things close to the vest vs JB who continually blew smoke up our butts.

Give me that WAC center and Judah with the current roster then I think when we gel that we’re a ranked team and not on the bubble.

If PJ Hall comes back, I want him. High energy, high skill, would love him here.

Would love to see Judah add defensive man to man specialist to his toolset. Right now I think he is a bit unproven because of the zone. Good in a zone doesn’t necessarily translate into good man defense. Do I think he will be good? Absolutely!!

There has been very little said about Cisse from Ok. St. I wonder if schools are waiting to see if he can become immediately eligible? It might be another reason Red is keeping things under wrap.

Not going to get an answer on that until September the way the NCAA works.

I am hearing about 1 who I don't like all that much. And the one doesn't seem to like us all that much either.

If that's where we are then let's somehow get Judah back or throw a big bag at a guard and work hard on getting the existing group's game leveled up plus some more weight on Maliq. Put the eggs in the 24 basket regarding bigs and don't miss.

OK, so 10 in 30 years. It's not an everyday thing, is my point. I'm not sure if you were the poster who said that JJ getting 11 ppg for Notre Dame while injured for most of last year "was trash". Point stands; that would have been a very solid freshman year, historically speaking.

Very solid?

I don’t want me defending my point sounding like I don’t want him. If he played with us last season he wouldn’t have averaged 10 because he wouldn’t have played. He played for a 11 win team. Very solid players don’t shoot below %30 from three, a negative A/T ratio at the guard position.

He can be better, but people are making it sound like he was one of the best freshman in the country last year.

I’ve heard 1 name that feels like another project. Another that I love but don’t think we’ll get.

And another that I think there was mutual interest at one point that I like…but has been no public movement forward.

Having said all that, I think Red works less publicly and im hopeful on that last one.

Then again I could be all wrong. Cisse was done to Miss. they must have got cold feet on his potential waiver and went Sharp.

Cisse is a complete unknown at this point.
