Judah Mintz to test NBA Draft waters

Sorry, what is the issue with Judah?

Of course he's all in on the draft. If you're trying to confirm whether you should stay in the draft or not, you better be all in. That's a ridiculous thing to even discuss.

If Judah comes back, we have a pre-season AA on our team with two top 40 recruits that we wanted for our back court/wings.

If he doesn't, it means that he's likely got a promise to get drafted at some point and SU is getting another player in the league and we can benefit from that and be happy with the JJ/Chance/TBD third guy we still get.

What is the issue here? Assuming we keep getting high level talent, this is likely going to be the norm.

Well the rumor is Filipowski didn’t declare because he was injured and the same may happen to Whitehead, but whatever.
I think Flip knew he was not going lottery and wanted to take his chances against what is supposed to be a weaker draft.

The big issue is fans will still lose interest if the roster is a complete turnover every year. NIL has to prioritize retaining key players. Losing out to the draft is one thing, but the Jesse situation rightfully sounds major alarms because other schools consistently find ways to bring their guys back.

Now sure, there can be some uptick in interest if the 1-year hired guns start winning, but it may feel more like a successful iteration of Boeheim's Army. It won't captivate the community like the pre-NIL era did. I want players who want to wear a Syracuse jersey because they love the campus, the tradition, the women, the parties, the coaching staff and teammates. Seems like any major talents that come here now are just looking at the paycheck and the number of zeros.

You think we got all those awesome players dating back to the 80s (and even earlier) because of the campus? The weather? You think SU is the only school that has parties?

We're bringing back Bell, JT, Brown, Hima, Carey, Benny and Q (I think all of those guys). Seven guys.

Jesse and Joe had been here four years already - without COVID, they're gone anyway. Symir never should have been here, let's be real. He's transferring to a team that has had one winning season in two decades in the America East.

Judah is NBA or us. If he comes back, that is 8 guys back.

We are bringing in two portal guys that we tried to get originally, one of which is from the Syracuse area.

We have Moore and are likely getting Donnie Freeman in the next week for 2024.

Do you think the fans were more engaged seeing 17-win team last year? The 16-win team the year before? We haven't won 20 games in four years. That is how you lose fans. You become irrelevant.

If any of those 7 guys left for "greener" pastures, I don't think the board would be melting down like we were about Jesse and Judah. Roster turnover is inevitable, and in some cases it's necessary to clear out dead weight. But a successful team is built around 1 or 2 key players returning to build momentum. Fans love it when a star player returns and helps them connect with the team. It's anyone's guess if our donors will be able to fight off other NIL offers as we move forward. Total uncertainty and chaos.

And, yes, if this is the new NIL world order and it's take it or leave it, of course we'll get behind whatever gets the program back on a winning track. I was all behind the 'Adam as our Bruce Wayne pimp' train. It just won't feel remotely like the "good old days", and I think it's sad that our kids will never get to experience what college hoops was like pre-portal/NIL.

With NIL and new transfer rules, any good players will be looking for the money.

College sports has become like Grand Central Station. Everybody is just searching for the train that will take them to their eventual destination. That was always really the case but part of the concept was that college was a location where you could prepare yourself fully for the next step. Now it's just a corridor you walk down to pick up your train.

But I heard you can’t improve by coming back to college.
Seriously, a fringe lottery pick is coming back but our late second rounder is most likely gone for a stellar career in the g league. Only Syracuse.

I don’t know how we got to the point where correctly pointing out that a kid should come back to school to improve his draft position means you are a selfish jerk who only cares about his favorite team, but here we are.
“Correctly”.

its your opinion.

reminder, you said this...

”Everyone still think it was a good idea for Oshae to leave after he regressed as a sophomore? Because no guys ever get better and improve their draft stock. Absolute shame. He is an nba athlete and could’ve stuck if he was more polished and skilled.”

One has a chance at winning a championship. The other is just trying to get back into the tournament.

%k that; I’m a Cuse fan and want to see the team at its most talented. Pay Judah and if we don’t have the NIL resources, then we can’t compete at this level.
Do you think Duke fans felt the same way about Filipowski and Whitehead when they were deciding about the draft? I bet they want to see the best possible Duke team next year.
Agree 100%. That is why I still have no idea why they did what they did to weistsman. He talked about bringing in money all the time and he brought a lot of good publicity and stars that would never be here into the wireless dome

Yep. And he’s also paid well in college so not leaving nearly as much on the table as he would have in the past.

And I think this is a big thing. Syracuse isn’t just one piece (Judah) or two (J + center) from top-10/national championship.

Does he really want to come back to a fringe team and get beaten up by much stronger programs?

Excellent job of research by you. First, I don’t know if you got the sarcasm that I had in the second sentence. Second, as far as Oshae goes the path he took is by far the hardest. Undrafted guys don’t usually stick around the league. One could easily make the argument that had he returned, and gotten better, he might have gotten drafted, made significantly more guaranteed money and had the skills to stick around in the league longer, and possibly get the much sought after huge second contract. I mean Toronto let him go and unfortunately it’s not like he is a centerpiece in Indiana.

Bringing this back to Judah, if I were him, and I had a choice of being undrafted and trying out for my supper, or returning to Syracuse and trying to improve my draft stock, I would choose the latter. Now, if the feedback was I would be going in the second round but I got a guarantee that I would get picked or I could go back to Syracuse, I would pick the latter. If I got a first round guarantee, I would go to the nba because the guarantees would be significant as would the investment by the general manager, who would be more likely to give him time to develop.

He didn’t get beat up this year. He won’t get beat up next year when we have better talent.

Undrafted sophomores and juniors don't stick around the league either. The vast majority of players don't.

If staying in college was a guarantee to greatly improved draft position, everyone would do it. But they don't. So, either they're dumb and/or greedy OR they, their agents, their coaches, and their support system don't share your opinion.

Let me know when you declare for the draft. Maybe another year in college will help you improve your draft stock.

Stick around longer? He’s still in the league. You were wrong when you said he was out in 2021 and you are doubling down? Also, He could have stayed 20 years at Syracuse and he would have never been a “centerpiece” for an nba team.

He could have came back and sat in the zone and never improved his shooting and defense.

Everything is a hypothetical...which is the point. We dont know. saying ”this is the right move” and “if I were him“ is pointless stuff. You aren’t and you don’t know what drives him. Neither do I. Let’s just hope he comes back so that our program is better.

I know a little bit more than nothing about what drives him, you might be surprised. I’d be shocked if he comes back.

Interesting
Holy guacamole, holy ravioli and holy frijoles!!!!
Kid is no less than a wizard. The reel is great as all are but this is the way I remember his freshman season. Constant attack mode, lol falls down every so often ;)

Unreal. Uncanny. So exciting to watch. He can go anywhere he pleases. We had an incredible treat to watch him this year. Sure, I'd like another year! But he will dazzle on any level, any time he wants.
