better guys available in our price range? Trey’s college production is pretty good even if the WAC level of competition is beneath the ACC.

The only thing our fans and this board is grasping into is “we’re top 10 this and that, close to a blue blood, etc etc” you know the deal then that needs to stop, top 10 programs, scratch that, top 25 programs aren’t taking WAC guys and plugging them in as their top players.

I have people coming at me saying how great JJ is, then I’m hearing we need a WAC guy to play over him, like where are we? We’re better than this and if it’s a budget issue, we’re cooked and if I were Red I’d be looking for another job because he won’t have success here.

I know the numbers game isn’t fair to Chance, but if you look at the numbers of every starter here and even curve them for improvement we’re a 10 win team right now, we’re not good. Are they young, sure, but we let three 5th year seniors walk, we can’t use the young excuse, we knew what we needed and as of now (not counting on this current roster sticking and believe in Red) and we’ve not gone after any experience, one guy who was injured and one guy who I don’t care what anyone says, had an awful year. This roster was much worse than last years and it’s not close. I really hope a lot of moves are going to happen.

Some thoughts...

1- the guard at Utah Valley- yeah no thanks. If there is to be a package deal then so be it and they go to Cal.

2- I think you are wrong on JJ. People say Brey got a harsh deal but the guy had his worst coaching year ever. His rotation choices were bad, there was often a sense they had no clue what they were running on either offense or defense and they often had 3 guys playing the same position getting in one anothers way and that was the position of lead guard. JJ was banged up a little too but overall it's a amazing he averaged even 11 with how awful that team was coached. That's coming with the fact I've been impressed with Brey from time to time. My God was he awful this year though and then being canned it got even worse.

3- top to bottom the roster isn't awful. Guys need to be put into better situations to succeed, we need work put in on playing multiple defenses and focus on the youth making the jump. This year is the year the freshman class last year makes it or they don't. Same goes for Benny. It's just too early to be able to have a clear line of sight into where this current roster is at. That's not an indictment on being negative or positive either. Just saying if we are gonna be realists - let's factor all the pieces here that can improve both individually and be better suited with a different style of play. On paper the totality of talent is comparable with most NCAAT teams.

4- I don't think flipping the roster would work to our advantage. We need more help and an influx of talent consistently. We also need guys who can simply just come in and get better every year until/unless we are swimming in NIL funds to buy 3 or 4 top 15 portal guys every year. I also don't think shelling out that much money every year is going to be sustainable for all but 8-10 programs and maybe even less.

As a week ago I believe 250 players declared for the draft. 60-80 will get invited to the combine. A large portion who don't I would imagine put their name in the portal if they haven't already.

The guard list out there right now is pretty outstanding. Big men is a different story.

I get your concerns about JJ. I have my own. I didn't think he looked all that great when we played them. His shot looked better in HS and for as great an athlete he was he was about as bad on defense as Girard. The hope is we tap into the potential he had coming out of high school.

I like JJ and Chance but one issue in our portal additions is we have not gotten older or more experienced. JJ had a nice fr. season but we havent added that accomplished player who has done it for 3 years. We chose not/didnt retain our 2 seniors. We will see what happens, I hope were not just giving the remaining scholarship to walk ons or legacy offspring.

Hoping for this as well, it can happen, but like you I’m looking at last year. Totally different level and last years data is far more important than high school.

The people crapping on me here are the same people who touted Symirs rating, Joseph’s rating, Moyers rating and every other miss we’ve had.

Im not saying the kid is a miss, but to me he is a 20 minute positionless guard until he can either prove he can shoot and or distribute at this level.

He can be good, but so can Benny, and I don’t want him playing more than 20 minutes a game until he can prove consistent.

We’re not Boston College and the boners for any shiny new toy is laughable, I’m saving mine.

We have a high ceiling I believe, but we also have a catastrophic floor, don’t think I’m out of line saying that.

This off season reminds me of waiting for an important blood test result that's taking too long.

The radio silence is neither bad or good until it breaks at this point is how I look at it. Is Red handling business but placing emphasis on keeping things as quiet as possible or gambling on things too much and there really isn't much happening... or in a worse case- not having a good enough overall pitch to compete when you factor everything NIL included?

Turnover is what happens in college sports. Losing 3 guys off a team that wasn't good enough for the NIT and replacing them with highly sought after 4* and 5* guys is good. I don't think we should be in the business of writing off anyone because of one year or what conference they play in.

I'm also not in the business of writing off kids who want to be here vs kids who chased a bag to some hillbilly town

Forgot about him too, but I am ok with that and even ok if they roll the dice on another HS guard to replace him since he was only a spot duty role player. Thought he would have been more in his 2nd year on the hill last year.

There are a few truths wrapped into a small window of time with the current situation.

The first is that yes we need to give Red a chance to rock and roll.

Secondly, because of the unique aspect of a carryover of the staff this summer becomes so important in the ability to validate the selection of this talent and get them ready and locked in with clear improvements.

Last - the recruiting for 24 must land well too. The superhuman task of doing this and the former is arguably unfair in a sense but it's also reality because it will have significant impacts on item 1 playing out as it needs to.

Is cope really that different? What did symir offer other than “experience?” Couldnt score, struggled to run the offense, was a okay defender but got cooked by anyone with a half decent handle. Dude was a run of the mill guy. That’s nothing bad, still better than 99% of the population, but I wouldn’t call him a loss.
