Who wins?

Judah, JJ, Bell, Taylor, Brown
Bench: Cuffe, Benny, Quadir, Naheem

Carlos, JJ, Bell, Freeman, Lampkin
Bench: Davis, Choppa, Cuffe, Lucas Taylor, Naheem, Petar, Westry

Does Judah make the difference as that go to alpha bucket getter in crunch time?

We know no one on the current team could keep Judah out of the paint or from getting to the line. Judah's style wouldn't be good for a quality winning team, but without him last year I'm not sure we win 12 games. For that reason alone, the dislike for him on here is misplaced. He probably single-handedly bought Red extra time.

Judah + Brown beat Lampkin + ?. I say last year's team takes this one right now. The story may be different by the end of the year.
Good assessment. Right now last year's team looks better, especially if you bench Taylor and ride Q from the start. But hopefully in a couple months this year's team is better - if you had unlimited time, I would say this year's team is more capable of becoming the better team.

bad take. yeah judah wasn’t a great shooter but think of how many “what if” games? that came down to the last couple mins. a couple games turns us into a march madness team. judah also would thrive around shooters which he didn’t have here.

Are you saying it's a bad take that we wouldn't have won games without Judah? The games we lost that were close probably wouldn't be that close at the end without Judah. And remember he decided to come back late, and I believe Red was going to roll with the rest of the team without Judah if Judah stayed in the draft. I can't imagine we do better or close to the same with that group and no Judah. Given the construct of the team, he had no choice but to carry the load.

Or are you saying it's a bad take Judah's style wouldn't be good on a winning team? His style of ball-dominance wouldn't have been good on a team like Uconn. When there were rumors of him portalling there were really good programs that didn't want to touch him because of his style. I mean, if he changed his style and stopped over-dribbling and dominating the ball, then yeah sure he could be good on a good team. But that's not what I'm talking about

My dislike isn't misplaced, but you're right.

The lesson is that relying on the portal to replace talent is an extremely tall order that will often disappoint. Red has landed some quality recruits already, and I think the winning formula is to recruit the right talent as freshman and then pay for their continuity. It is quite possible that no amount of money could have lead to keeping guys like Brown and Judah around this year, but I would rather overpay a little to get a guy to stay with the program, rather than overpay just to land a recruit that is choosing between us and literally whichever school is willing to fork over the most cash. It is a recipe for disappointment in the return on investment.

While it is easy to point to "talent evaluation" when criticizing the staff's portal adds, but the options they have are limited to players who are in the portal, have some level of interest in playing for Syracuse (a team currently far from the top tier), and are not getting offered more money by some other place. They know the guys we are bringing in have flaws, but they are the best we can grab out of the portal.

While there is no doubt Judah would get to the rim at will and finish very often against this years team ….. last years team just didn’t have the size . 95% of our minutes at the 4 last year went to Q and Taylor who were both 6’6. Then 6’8 Maliq at the 5. We were so small
Last year and couldn’t rebound at all. Davis/Freeman/Lampkin would most likely have a field day down low

give this team a couple months and it will become obvious that they would beat last year's team

they will look like a different team once they get the defense figured out

This year's team is deeper, can rebound better and has more talent top to bottom. But...and it's a huge but...it's missing a legit point guard which is the key to any good team. If it can find some consistency there then I think we have a lot of upside.

I think this team is going to miss the consistency of Brown. Maybe Lampkin can be that guy but you got the same thing almost every game from Maliq.

Any time a player on this team touches the court you have NOOOOOOOOOOO idea what you're going to get out of that player.

Why is it that Freeman, our 5 star, doesn’t know what to do? Wasn’t he coached in high school? Is college so very different?

He played well at times like any freshman in their first two games. I am not worried about him.

If you don't do much against tomato cans how can you do well against better teams?

When we have to look for a play or two defending how good he why is it ignored when he's doing absolutely nothing.

I'm sorry, I expected way way way more than what we're seeing now, there's a reason he didn't play down the stretch, in a close game, against Colgate.

He's better than Benny but we did the same thing game after game until it was like with. If we get 8/5 from him the rest of the way I'll be happy.

Let's just say Freeman will get better during the year, but would have been a bench piece on the 1987-1991 teams.

Nah, Freeman looks pretty darn good for a freshman this early. The kid had a double-double in his first college game. If that's over-rated, please give me a team filled with over-rated players. He needs to be coached up on defense, but that is true for every player we have right now.

I think people underestimate how much Maliq did for us last year. He is undersized but is so valuable on both sides of the ball. He is the wildcard for me. Other than that, I think we got an even trade in the Judah for Eddie sweepstakes.

Judah et al would win going away.

Judah would get to his shot / attack at will and either score or end up shooting 700 FTs. He isn't really a pure PG, so it's not like the ball would be popping around, but he could attack and get into the teeth of the D. Especially this year's D on our team.

Lampkin would score, but Brown would make him work and it's not like guys are getting Eddie the ball in prime position. And, Lampkin couldn't go 40. Naheem could be in for bursts too.

But Judah et all would win, easily. This wouldn't be close. As much as a problem Judah may have been, he also had legit talent. And the focus of his talent would destroy this year's team.

His first game was better than basically any game Benny played. His defense needs work. Same for most freshman.

I think Freeman is going to be a great player. I'm surprised how much negativity there is about him here. He played an important roll in the run that got it to 13 in the second half before the whole front court got taken out. I could be wrong but I don't think he got back in.

It just helps me see how tremendous our freshmen Carmelo and Gerry were. They could play on day one.

I wish Freeman the very best. And why wouldn’t I?

If you actually remember back to last year's first couple games, they were pretty grim. Brown was playing hurt and couldn't jump, they were getting smoked on the boards. Starling had a hitch in his shot and was afraid to shoot. Taylor was taking the second most shots on the team behind Mintz. Bell had not yet heated up from 3.

I think this team is better, all things considered, lets see how they evolve and figure things out. Freeman is a freshman playing his first few games now, he could be an NBA player by March. Lots of basketball still. Lots of learning.
