Let Me Tell You About Drew Allen, Because I Know and You Should Listen

Also - do you like gladiator movies?
Oh shoot, I forgot about that, thanks Toga. I wrote it on my hand and everything "1) the number 44. 2) gladiator movies."

HAHAHAHA that was some Rush Limbaugh style right there (hope's that's not an insult for a northerner, but listen to his show sometime and you'll get it).
OU4...since you seem to have some kind of personal connection with Drew here's a word of caution.

If Drew wins the QB job or sees significant playing time in any SU loss you might want to steer clear of this place. The very same visionaries and paradigm shifters that have befriended you here today are among the first to savage their own players (often the QB) and coaches if they see fit. Keep in mind that many of these folks are experts...football gurus, if you will. And in some cases, it's all about style over substance.

You've been warned ;-)

I'm no journo, but I try my best.

OU, if you ever find yourself in the northeast, I'm sure many on here would welcome you to our little tailgating circle and a game at the Dome.

Well, if you're talking about me (and you are because you love my style over substance ways), the only player I've ever been openly critical of was Hay, but I contend that was justified because he may have been the dumbest player in program history.

Coaches though, otherwise known as the grown men that are paid handsomely to coach a recreational activity... they can and should be criticized.

I just find it unfortunate that it only seems to be Syracuse fans who criticize after a loss. You don't see that stuff happening in the SEC after a loss.

This has got to be at least in the Top 10 Best Threads Ever!!!

OU4...thanks for the posts and information!!

You're giving Tee a run for his money in this thread.

As a westerner, I get to see almost all of the OU games. In fact, just by co-incidence I was a Sooner fan as a kid, and rooted for them even before I went to the Cuse. To this day they are my 2nd favorite team.

I agree with everything OP had to say in his terrific post. Allen was put in a spot where he saw very little action, but the few times he was out there I was quite impressed. Drew has the goods. The only issue will be if he has enough experience despite being a senior since he has had very little PT & he has never played with games on the line. It remains to be seen if he will make many "freshman" type mistakes.

As fo OU, all I can say is that the Belldozer is exactly that...a Belldozer & not a QB. He did not impress me at all the few times he threw. Even as strong a program as OU would probably only go 6-5 give or take a game if he ends up as their QB. I sure hope they have somebody else.

still remember the ou game at the dome 20 years ago or so(i was still drinking so in reality not so much)- -

the one thing that stuck in my mind about the ou fans were almost all the guys had on fanny packs-
about 3-5 years too late if i understood what the girls were saying about them-:rolling:
al's wife carrol had a fun time with those "boys"

Thats was 1994. My first Cuse game in the dome and I was hooked, missed extra point and all.

Nothing wrong with criticism especially when it's well thought out and not simply a temper tantrum...but I draw the line at criticizing college players by name or implication. I'll always remember Al McGuire's mantra..."You never boo amateur athletes."

Ftr, there are a few here that b1tch for the sake of b1tching.

My aunt, god rest her sole was from Oklahoma. My wife and I were out there visiting and she gave us some advice for when we were driving around. She said, "when ya'all are drivin around, if ya come across a dad burned tarnada, find a bar ditch and get down"! I think she ment a tornado, but my wife and I still can't figure out what a bar ditch is. Oklahoma has the warmest people in the world, bar none and great post. I feel better about our situation!

Remember this guy?

For the youngster's out there it's Todd Philcox a QB who didn't get his chance to start until his senior season.

The man in front of him was none other than Don McPherson who in 1987 led SU to an 11-0-1 season.

In 1988 all Philcox did was lead SU to a 10-2 record and a win over Penn State

Here is an article where 20 years later Todd recalls the thrill of beating Joe Pa's crew that year 24-10

He also led us to a 23-10 victory over LSU in the Hall of Fame game

Philcox was 6-4 and around 220, an inch shorter and quite a few pounds lighter than Drew.

Todd used that one year well as he ended up having a 9 year NFL career as a result.

Should Drew win the QB competition one can only hope he has as successful a season as our one year starter.

To the OP, thanks for taking the time to help us get to know Mr. Allen

Absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

My wife and I drove cross country shortly after 9/11 and spent some time in Oklahoma City. We visited the memorial and were blown away by how touching it was. We were very impressed with the people of Oklahoma...some of the friendliest people we've ever met.

Great place to order steak...they do it right.

Definitely a favorite player of mine. Philcox would have set all kinds of records had he played a couple more years. And one of the few Syr QBs who had a while in the NFL.

Thanks OU. Great post.

I saw Bell live in two games, at Baylor in 2011 and Home v. OSU last November. Bell never impressed me as being a real leader. His clock management/awareness was poor and you nailed it on the head, when he was in, he was going to rush forward and fall down - which frustrated me more when I factored in his clock skills!

I admit that I was under the impression that Allen was 3rd string because Bell was allegedly better. Even my friends in Norman were down on Bell and wondered about this. I was skeptical when Allen announced Syracuse as his destination. However, after his practice reports and OU fan reports like yours, I am willing to let Allen have the starting job to prove himself.

How can you guys have the lovefest with Oklahoma dude. Both games in the 90s were devastating loses...seriously, what a great post that was and kind of always like Oklahoma. I always recall watching the Ok/Neb games and for some reason, starting routing for Oklahoma.

This, however, is my fav moment:

Pretty sure it was this guy in charge of the Belldozer fan club.

is that real...or just a guy shopping around the Chaumont bay garage sales on weekends

Does Oklahoma still have 3.2 beer and clubs you have to join in order to go to a bar?

Great insight and thanks for taking the time to share the story. I am really excited to see what this kid can do! Go CUSE!!

I have no idea.

HtownOrange might know the answer to that one.

He has been out there on the Internets for at least 7-8 years...pretty sure it is legit. Obviously not me as I would wear Orange hot pants out doing garage sales.

and just think...I don't scare easy, but...

Thank you for the post. Good luck to your season (but not against the Baylor Bears).

Great post. I am now officially psyched!!! Some of this I knew, but not in so much detail. Just that he got a raw deal playing backup and could be really good, and needed to find his best opportunity to play. But to hear it from you makes it real, and not just some hopeful speculation.
