Looks like we could Doug Marrone as the next Tennessee Titans HC

All pretty good coaches as well. I think Lewis is in the category of it just gets old after while. He's a good coach, just can't win in the playoffs. If you fire him, who do you hire is the question, not easy
at this point, why bother. their system works. it took too long to get it right but that's a sunk cost. they would've gone to the super bowl if dalton hadn't gotten hurt, i think.

As a Bengal season ticket holder I will be the first to admit Marvin Lewis should have been fired. I am sorry but he has taken this team as far as he can and unfortunately can't get them over the top. One and done in the playoffs is getting old. It's obvious he can't control his players after watching the epic meltdown Saturday night.

While our cheap owner has held on to M Lewis we have left 3 quality assistants walk who are now Head Coaches (Zimmer, Jay Gruden and Hue Jackson).

Meanwhile we are stuck in sports purgatory.

I can imagine the frustration, but on the opposite side of the coin--you guys got to 11-5 despite your starting QB being injured. And that playoff debacle wasn't necessarily on coaching.

Doesn't Lewis have the lengthiest tenure of any HC?

So at this point, I think we can all agree that Marrone cashing out from the Bills was a really poor judgement call on his part, right? Yeah, he got that $4 million for doing nothing, but now it looks like, barring some miracle in Tennessee, he is actually down $4 million, as he'd either still be coaching the Bills next year or he would have gotten canned and still got paid. The "hottest" head coaching name on the market hasn't gotten a HC job in two years now. Go figure :noidea:

This was their year as the team still had Marvin Jones and Muhammed Sanu on rookie contracts. The Bengals are cheap. They won't spend to keep their roster together. Next year they will be easier to defend.

The Bengals are led by this generation's Marty Schottenheiner. They outtalent the bad teams and when they play peer teams poop the bed.

Bengals roster this year was top 3 in talent and they screwed it.

Almost...

First, we have to wait out Tennessee for the short-term ramifications. Even without Tennessee this year, he may still end up very well. The guy didn't like Buffalo. Sometimes it is better personally to get out of a situation you don't like than stay...even it it means less money. Since he got $4M + his new salary as an assistant, he might be satisfied that he is still better off than having to stay in the situation in Buffalo. It's a personal thing.

Lots of CEOs go into a company and sell out the company so they can cash in on their stock options and make a few million. They are heroes (not quitters) to many on this board.

Tennessee is leaning towards retaining Mike Mularkey because the NFL is going to force the Titans to ownership to sell the team thus they don't want to hire a new coach for a potential new owner.

Life long Bengal fan and I too think it was a perfect opportunity to tell Marvin "thanks for all you have done, but it is time to move on". Also I am not that crushed about Hue Jackson - we had great people, can the cute stuff and get after it offensively. The 2 pt conversion call in the playoff game was Hue in a nutshell.

I think they are still in pretty good shape. A lot of over priced guys will come off the books (Andre Smith and Leon Hall). They have 15 free agents and the only 3 IMHO that they need to keep are Vincent Rey, Nelson and Jones and the other safety. Pacman cost himself money with his melt down and he's a much better value than Hall.

I agree about the talent - front office is bringing in the people, Marvin and company need to do more than make the playoffs.

Depends on where he coaches next season. If he is still an OL coach for Jax then one can argue it was a dumb move. If he isn't a HC in 2017, then it is clear cut that he made a mistake.

most ridiculous thing i have ever seen posted.

until this.

Gordon Gecko doesnt exist.

at least not anymore.

Unless you know (or anyone else) what the meeting was like between Marrone and the Pegulas and are willing to share, I will not agree nor disagree that it was a poor judgement call on his part.

As a die hard Jet fan, it was a head scratcher when they hired the blowhard Rex, who's greatest "win" was beating his old team to knock them out of the playoffs - and then he goes and hires his brother, who's had questionable levels of success, as his next DC.

Say what you will about Marrone, he isn't a dumb guy.

That's not why he left Buffalo. The guys is an ego-maniac, had a list of demands which weren't met and walked away with $4 million thinking that he had another head coaching job locked up. It's going into year two of him not being employed as a head coach and his power grab is proving to be futile. He's cost himself money and the prestige of an NFL head coaching job, which I think he is finding is an opportunity that is very rare to come by and you don't just walk away from. Good to see there are still some on here that keep the Dougie spin machine rotating endlessly though.

That does not refute my point. He may still be happier now than he was in Buffalo. Frankly, if he was an ego maniac and the only thing he cared about was being HC, he would have stayed in Buffalo. Obviously, there is more to it than that.

The more to it part is him making a power play that backfired in his face. Obviously he's still very interested in being a head coach, judging by his interviewing (or allegedly interviewing) for just about every single job opening out there. He's damaged goods though. It would have been better for him to stick it out and potentially get fired versus walking out after 2 years in the job. NFL teams love to hire retreads who were fired elsewhere. Quitters though? That's a tough sell to a fan base.

It's already a mistake though. Like I said, barring a miracle out of Tennessee, he has cost himself one year of a Head Coaches' salary, and potentially much more, depending on what happens in the future.

Absolutely. Look at the guys hired this year who were fired elsewhere. Not to mention the guys who were being considered. The 49ers were down to Chip Kelley and Mike Shanahan, both fired recently, Shanahan hasn't won since he had Elway as his QB. The Browns just hired Hue Jackson, who was fired, albeit from the most dysfunctional franchise in the sport. In fact, the only two openings that I saw that went to new guys were NYC and Philly, I think

The Buffalo Bills are the Rutgers of the NFL. Doug got out of that dumpster fire at least partially intact. I could see Rex and Rob at the drunken mash pit post game show.

He's a smart guy. He knew that there was a possibility he would not get the Jets job and he was satisfied with that + $4M +$ wherever he ended up is better for him personally than staying with the Bills.

yes there is.

$$ and happiness for sure.

apparently, reaching the pinnacle of your career of being a NFL HC...confused the hell out of him so he quit it.

now he wants it back.

he should just stop the charrade, take his millions and go coach HS in the Bronx.

hes clearly not cut out to be a NFL HC.

he had it...and didnt want it.

and now hes 4mill in the hole and wants a HC again.

i think hes lost his mind.

crazy is as crazy does.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. I just don't believe that he disliked Buffalo so much that he was willing to throw his career away.

He is still in football and if he does a good job, he will get another shot at HC. He, by no means, threw his career away.
