Luke Carney in the portal

I don't think it's that strange if he wasn't that good in practice.
That would make sense, except for the fact that the play on the field we saw was the nation's top interception thrower and whatever you want to call what Filardi did (again, not his fault).

So I then have to believe that Carney practiced so poorly the staff was willing to live with atrocious performance in games from other guys, but practiced well enough that the staff was willing to pop him in for a series here and there, where unlike our other QBs he didn't do anything disastrous.

Satisfactory explanations just don't exist.

They thought a walk-on lacrosse player was better. Tells you all you need to know. Sure, record-setting Texas QB but it was in the smallest Texas classification, small private schools. Carney appears to be a miss. Brown did him and his family good by preserving the year.
It tells me nothing. Very little that was done after Angeli went down made sense. The yo-yoing amongst QBs, putting Carney in for 3 plays then sitting him back down, playing Filardi at all...

It’s not possible to rationalize something that isn’t rational.

The whole thing was bizarre and hopefully we have a much different, deeper and competent QB depth chart for 2026.

I never said anything about a problem kid or family. And to be clear, I never heard anything of that nature either. I only heard about his performance in practice and that other folks outplayed him. It happens.

We've hyped many under-recruited kids in the past. Everyone thought Lamson was going to be a star. Countless kids like this.

I do question why we recruited someone like him when he wasn't a fit for our system but with the portal, that's less of a concern. You can see who works or doesn't in practice and move on.

Obviously the bigger issue was whiffing on Rickie and not having a capable backup. Most staffs won't have three solid QBs. We've only had to debate this nonsense on QB3 vs Qb4 because of how bad Rickie was in game situations. If anything, Fran/Nixon should have ignored the critics and just kept Rickie in.
I think the upside of Ricky was way higher than the other 2 they tried to play. the mistakes were killers but there were times the offense was functional

The only time was garbage time when the 3s were in
not true. you have lots of film that showed some high level throws.

Imagine if everyone here had a job where they got booed for mistakes and ripped all over the internet.

High level throws to what team? my man… not to be difficult here but I just can’t. And yes, it’s tough being in the spotlight and being critiqued, no doubt, but that’s the business.

Hey he was better than Filardi.

we were the best team in CFB in garbage time. We were blown out so many times, 8 games in a row, we had ample opportunities. DART!

Yeah, there’s no way to make the brain comprehend the QB situation in 2025. Maybe Fran Brown is a brilliant recruiter who’s also an unorganized game day coach that doesn’t make logical decisions. We can rationalize the situation all we want, but walk on lax players don’t start over scholarship athletes.

He is a dual threat QB.
I do not remember hearing he was moving positions.
DON'T GASLIGHT ME SOMEBODY TOLD ME OR I READ SOMEWHERE BELIN IS MOVING TO RUNNING BACK

THAT HAPPENED OK?!?!??!?!!

Ignore The Big Lebowski GIF

They literally recruited him just last year. You’re telling me they didn’t know his arm talent until he reached campus? This is on the coaches.
This has nothing to do with his arm…

To be fair. He was only a walk-on I believe because he already had the Lax offer and scholarship.

IIRC we did offer Filardi, he just decided on LAX.

Soooo he was a walk-on but not in the traditional sense

If you planned to redshirt, and the two guys in front of you got injured/were bad, you're a terrible teammate if you don't want to play because it would burn your shirt. Point blank period.
That’s not what happened. He wanted to play

there were some really nice seam throws. But he did make too many mistakes in seeing the field and too many loose throws.

The game was moving too fast for Rickie, and it led to panic throws too often.

Maybe it slows down with more reps, who knows. But for some, it takes dropping out of P4 for it to slow down.

Rickie's better than Filardi, so there's that? I do wish Rickie started the BC game (they were one of the worst pass defenses in college football) and they just told him let it rip. There aren't enough people in the Dome to even care about boos.
