About to start. Can someone give a rundown? Tks!

Apparently we are going to continue to focus on establishing the run to set up the play-action pass rather than using the pass to spread the field and open up the lanes to run in.

understandable...its that outdated coach speak ego filled thinking precisely that is mostly responsible for this 3 game skid...sure that wasnt george halas or paul brown on the radio?

So do you think that is a fire-able offense?

So you think that is something ultimately fire-able?

My mind doesn't even go there. I am firmly on the Doug bandwagon with my seatbelt tightly fastened. I do think we need to mix it up a lot more in the first quarter. My guess is that they saw what Rutgers did with the run last week and find no reason not to try to do the same.

why would that be fir-able?
You said that Marrone's ego-filled thinking, which by this time seems to be established as in-stone (I believe), is mostly responsible for our 3-game skid. Why would you want to keep that coach? In all this complaining, given what we know about Marrone, I hear the subtext of "he's not the guy."

Umm, Paul Brown was a very pass-happy coach. His offenses with the Browns were light years ahead of the times. I believe he was the first coach to use an empty backfield.

Any team that gives up that kind of yardage to Rutgers ought to be ashamed of themselves. Rutgers doubled their season rushing totals with that game.

dont put words in my mouth...forums like this are the place for opinions and compliants. as i have stated...he is what he is...organized, represents well, has conditoning this team well but on a schematic level and gameday play caller...has alot to learn...are we good enough for coaches to announce during the week ...hey! we are gonna pound it! no we arent there yet...offense is about speed and deception. dont want him fired, but he is not the savior either...

One observation -- there are coaches who would know that a scout defense can't match the defense a rival will throw at you. So, you anticipate and set up game conditions. Just like you pipe in a lot of sound to get your team ready to play in a loud stadium. Or, you practice with 13 scout defenders on the field. Or, as in basketball, you have a couple of inside defenders hold up broom sticks if you don't have any 6 ft 10 guys but your next opponent does. I can understand that Hackett is getting on the job training; but you would think Doug and his staff would get ahead of the curve. Maybe it only happens in year 4?

My mistake - I forgot the word "eventually" as I included in a previous post in this thread, as in "you want him fired eventually." It sounds like you are saying that, since he is not the savior. So how long do you want to let him hang around? Wait until the ACC money becomes reality and we can afford $2.5 mil for a HC, and then send him packing? I am genuinely curious - not a flame or taunt.

i like doug...i really do. class guy, all about cuse, alumnus, pro experience but i have to say his business approach and demeaner may not translate to 18-22 yo kids. i hope i am dead wrong but he has been outschemed in the rutgers, ville, uconn, and usf games and the team was not ready to play coming out of the tunnel. i LOVE our staff. yes, some of this is on shafer(uconn) ...this league was there for the taking this year...he is a nice coach, gonna always represent and have us at .500, but i dont see that moxy and killer instinct that a holgerson, rich rod, saban, meyer, kelly, and kiffen have. yes, i know what your going to say...doug's kids have discipline problems too...on and off the field...

Holgerson killer instinct ... you mean the same Holgerson that was mauled in the Dome ... the same Holgerson that was outschemed by SU and LVille? And Rich-Rod who wouldn't change his 3-3-5 defensive scheme which cost him his job at U of M. Really? I will give you Saban and Meyer ... I am not sold on Kelly who would chuck a player under the bus at the drop of a hat and the verdict is still out on Kiffin from where I stand, I don't feel he gets the most out of his talent. You don't feel Marrone's demeanor will translate to 18-22 yr olds but Kelly screaming in a kids face on national TV and failing to win games they have no business losing (to USF for instance) with top ranked recruiting classes does it for you? I guess you could say Kelly was outschemed by Holtz right? Marrone is 1-1 against Holtz and 1-0 against Holgerson. I think you might want to wait and see how the next couple of years shake out before you stick a fork in his relationship with his players.

I don't understand why, if you criticize a coach, there's a preseumption that you want him fired. Hopefully Doug will have a very successful tenure here during which his stubbornness with sometimes be irritiating.

I think HCDM is just baiting Cincy into thinking that our gameplan is to just run the ball.

I believe that this is the game the coaching staff has been saving "their" offense for, the offense we've been waiting for going on 3 years now. We didn't want Cincy to be able to gameplan for it so now we will spring it on them. :D

I'll say it... If Marrone and Co. are still putting this years product on the field in year 5... Yes, he is "fire-able"

Wow -- there is a new angle (wishful, but new). I sure hope Doug tries to mix it up a bit, but he has limited weapons in the arsenal. He runs because he believes in getting this team into a 2nd and 6 situation, 3rd and 3; and not into 2nd and 12. The OL won't hold up, he doesn't have deep threats, so getting into 2nd and 12s is a losing approach. He said that in the interview, sincerely, and he has shown that in his gameday tactics, again and again. He also said he is working to narrow the playbook to the plays that Nassib & colleagues have confidence in. Could all be a charade to fool Cincy, if you think Doug is a crafty sort of guy.

He is a first time head coach and is going through growing pains. How many first time head coaches came in to a "big time" program and instantly took them from the depths of college football to the pinnacle? Can anyone name one? I strongly believe we will become an annual top-25 team and some years we'll be in the top 10. He is doing things the right way. He does need to open up the playbook a bit, but we don't have the O-line for it and our QB has weaknesses. If Nassib could hit the deep ball even 25% more than he does now (I'd love to see his statistics on 25+ yard throws), we would probably have another win or two. Our RB's this year aren't great and same with our WR's. Our best player on offense is our TE. That isn't a good thing to say about an offense.

Does Hackett need to be demoted/fired? Maybe. I trust HCDM. He took us from one of the 5 worst programs in division-1 and in 3 short years has fans saying "man, we should have won our conference this year!". Go ahead and re-read that last sentence. Before the season everyone was predicting somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5 for the team. Guess what, we're going to fall somewhere in that range. Sure, these late season swoons aren't good and we do need to figure out certain aspects (tackling on special teams, more consistent offensive plays and more diverse playcalling) but this team is definitely headed in the right direction. I give Marrone the benefit of the doubt. He's learning as he goes. If the same mistakes are there next season as are there this season, then sure, lets revisit this topic. But for now lets just enjoy the fact we are actually in contention for another bowl.

I agree in general, but in the present case I see lines of argument that resemble personnel files compiled to justify firing with cause. The contention here is that Marrone is out of touch with the college game, and worse, he stubbornly insists on an offensive system that puts us at a disadvantage right out of the tunnel. And then he insists on setting the gameplan to try something that likely will not work, over and over, despite evidence! That goes beyond irritation with a coach's quirks. That argument says, "Our coach is putting us in a position to lose." And he is doing it repeatedly, by design.

The logical end of that position is that the coach has to go, even if people don't admit it.
