Mike Hopkins: Next Siena HC?

I honestly thought Hop would have been a home run hire at GM or top assistant for us. But I imagine he has loftier goals for himself and rightfully so.

He has to be losing his NBA gig. His whole resurfacing at the collegiate level is odd.

He’s been on back to back bad teams in the NBA. Suns underperformed last year and the Pels are awful this year. Would assume the Pels may be cleaning house.

Think Siena would be a good spot for him.

I’m also interested if we can make it our minor league team for guys we aren’t sure of.

In fact, wouldn’t be surprised if P4 teams started making regional alliances like that.

Hop can pitch it as “come dominate at Siena, go to Cuse and get a pay raise”.

I have a very different perspective than most posters here. I’m a Siena alum and want them to get the best coach possible. For all the reasons people didn’t want Hop at Syracuse, I don’t want him at Siena. As one said ‘why the hell not’? Because he proved he isn’t a good coach! And bring Red and Griff along too? No thanks.
Siena shouldn’t be a halfway house for failed SU coaches.
I hope they do better and find another young coach that’s full of promise and potential.

I wouldn't hire him either if I was in charge at Siena... but if they are willing to, then good for him.

If he wants to restart his college coaching career, he has to resurface and start again somewhere.

It would be a great way to be more creative about how to handle the NIL budgets if you are working together with another program. I thought I saw someone else post about Siena being a feeder program earlier and it makes a lot of sense…

Pretty shocked at some of the takes here. Do you expect Hop to just walk into a big time job after his failure at Washington? He has to rebuild his image.

Per Jake in another thread, Hop has no interest in being an assistant coach in college.

So he has to rebuild his image as a lower tier head coach.

I think this is a perfect fit for both Siena and Hopkins.

Siena has a lot of resources compared to their conference. Hop is a top notch recruiter with great resources and connections on the east coast.

It’s a match made in heaven for both of them. Get his feet back under him, I would expect him to have great success there. This is not the same as being handed the Syracuse Job, which he had no right being in contention for.

This is a crucial hire for Siena. They can't afford to regress and lose their competitive edge. Hop might be a bad fit for Syracuse, but not for Siena. He brings along some financial backing plus a great slew of connections in the Northeast.

People say he's a bad coach. Hop was a fish out of water at UW. Even the most successful coach ever at UW, Lorenzo Romar, had issues and was terminated. Hop never should have left the eastern time zone.

I've been following Siena since the Bill Kirsch, Division 3 days of the 1970's. I've seen successful coaches and non successful coaches.

I would be a fan of John Becker from UVM, but Hop is a better candidate. Hop will have a wide range of assistant coach candidates to choose from. Assuming Ben Lee goes to Syracuse, Hop can hire the next Ben Lee.

Do they, tho?

I thought I read they built a new science facility/building complex and had big millionaire benefector alum that was funding it to the tune of $35 million... and when the time came to write the 2nd round of funding checks for the facillity, the checks didn't come in... and then speculation that the big whale's business wasn't in good shape and his funding plans with them were scuttled?? They already started the construction and had to foot the bill on a line of credit and then they announced a wave of early retirment packages for staff across the whole school... I believe there was a times union article a few mos ago... sounded sketch.

Like the guy they had before Gerry

Exactly! Hop doesn't have a track record of success as a head coach at other spots where you can just say Washington was a bad fit. He still has to prove himself and that quite often means at a lower level.
I don't know how you can justify hiring him at the power conference or higher mid-major level with his current track record.

I'll be curious how he does. I agree he'll be able to get talent and hope he can coach them up.

I remember Kirsch as well so I go back nearly as long as you. Siena has done poorly when they pick an assistant or don’t do a thorough search for a new coach. And they’ve done very well when doing a thorough search. They’ve found some great young coaches such as Gerry, Paul Hewitt, and Fran McCaffrey. Hope they can keep things going as you mention.

AW said in a recent interview that while he will always support GMAC, he will continue to provide NIL support to Siena. Had a meeting with their president to that affect and raves about how well he was treated by everyone at Siena. Was at the Siena Duke game.

I would imagine unless SU freezes him out he will continue to support Doty. Loves that kid.
Probably would’ve been treated the same here if he stopped trying to be the center of attention.

Not a chance in hell that’s ever a pitch anyone would make. Not without millions coming his way every year to rebuild
