Mike Hopkins: Next Siena HC?

Is that the team Boeheim played for?
Scranton Miners.

Hop is a great coach. Waited forever as JB's coach designate. I believe he would have had a great career at SU but got tired of waiting and took the W job but really disappointed he wasn't at SU.
Had everything set up, just couldn't wait anymore. Hope he has a great run at Siena and retires in a beautiful town knowing he did his best. OR goes to SU and becomes Gerry's head man.

possibly the best basketball name ever, "Swish" McKinney!
Yup. Reminds me of Sticks Downey, the drummer in Richie's band, on Happy Days.

Bill Spivey also on the team. Was blackballed by the NBA during gambling scandal in the early 50's. I wonder if he ever talked about it with Boeheim.

Per what some have shared articles on he’s a relentless hard worker and very detail oriented as it pertains to game planning and film study. For all intents and purposes he’s a Luke Murray type ( no idea on his ability as an offensive mind) in terms of being smart and ambitious.
Also supposedly an analytics guy.

I find it funny that Fran McCaffery left Siena for Iowa, coached there for 15 years, and never made the Sweet Sixteen. Then the year after he’s let go, they make the Elite Eight. Just adds to the bizarreness of that guy’s career. Hopefully GMac blows his results away.

Hop coaching at Siena means I’ll need to check the schedule and schlep out to Mount St Mary’s for a game again.

Lee was Gerry's top assistant at Siena. Very much an analytics guy and a tireless worker.
He was the head of recruiting, the scout team assistant and he oversaw the guards.
He was widely praised by Gerry for having the genius idea to have Folefac guard Merrimack's Kennedy who was the MAAC player of the year in the tournament final.
Once they learned Duke was their NCAAT opponent, he literally stayed in the Siena office overnight so he could analyze Duke's most recent games and also any games where the opponents skill sets were close to Siena. He presented all of Duke's weaknesses so the coaches could come up with a strategy to beat Duke.
I think we can all agree that went very well.
Quite young, only 29.

Do they, tho?

I thought I read they built a new science facility/building complex and had big millionaire benefector alum that was funding it to the tune of $35 million... and when the time came to write the 2nd round of funding checks for the facillity, the checks didn't come in... and then speculation that the big whale's business wasn't in good shape and his funding plans with them were scuttled?? They already started the construction and had to foot the bill on a line of credit and then they announced a wave of early retirment packages for staff across the whole school... I believe there was a times union article a few mos ago... sounded sketch.

Correct. They’re in financial trouble. I know two people who work/worked there that would know. It’s not a surprise AW was welcomed with open arms. They had to. Which is not a knock on them or AW.

Hop is a terrific coach. He has a dynamic personality, connects with players, and knows the X’s and O’s. I have no doubt that with sufficient resources, Hop will be competitive with any program in that league. I look forward to Hop’s future success and returning to the NCAA tournament!!!!! Go get ‘em, Hopper!

What’s his career record as a HC? That screams terrific head coach?

hop had a line that has stuck with me for 25 years at a big brothers/little brothers banquet years ago he was the featured speaker at...said that "kids spell love not L O V E, but T I M E!" Great line never forgot it, good dude, wish him well and nothing but success

That’s a great line!
