Ashton Broyld Unofficial MVP of Spring Game; More Observations (PS; Mink)

Syracuse concluded spring practice Saturday afternoon with its annual spring game. Featuring a creative scoring system, the offense defeated the defense, 34-27 in front of a crowd of 4,071 at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse opened the day with some 7-on-7 work before a 72-play controlled scrimmage. Syracuse seemed to come out of the day healthy, though there were two uneasy moments early on when middle linebacker Marqez Hodge and center John Miller briefly left the field because of injuries. Both returned, and the action picked up as the day went along.

Here are some observations from the scrimmage:

1. Ashton Broyld is the MVP
The junior is part of a cluster of wide receivers competing to find a regular spot in the rotation, and Broyld did most of his damage with the second-team offense.
He led all receivers with eight catches, 126 yards and two touchdowns, including a 54-yard catch-and-run down the sideline on a bubble from redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Wilson in the second half.

"It's been a long time," Broyld said on reaching the end zone. "I'm new to a position that I have to learn, have to get a feel for it, and I'm starting to get a feel for it." ...

Bromley Predicts Breakout Season for Ron "Sugar Bear" Thompson at DE (PS: Mink)
Oh, I got a guy," Bromley exclaimed at Syracuse's spring game on Saturday. "You know I have a guy. Ron Thompson. He's the guy I'm putting all the eggs in my basket on."

Thompson's spring game performance backed Bromley's assessment. He led SU's defensive linemen with six tackles and was involved in two plays behind the line of scrimmage. Nose tackle Eric Crume assisted on four tackles, while no other defensive lineman was involved in more than two.

"He has the most potential," Bromley said of Thompson. "He has the most upside of anyone. He's our most athletic defensive lineman, our fastest. This is only his second year playing the position. It's going to be scary when he puts it all together."

Reactions from Recruits: Alin Edouard Saw Everything He Wanted to See (PS; Mink)

...
Quarterback Alin Edouard: "Honestly, I saw everything that I wanted to see when I committed to Syracuse. A school that fits my playing style, good talent that I'm playing around, and the important one is having coaches who care about education.

"Spring game really opened my eyes. Now it's my time to come in and compete with the other QBs and get along with everybody. That's what I call a team, where Syracuse comes to get together as a team and play their heart out."
Offensive lineman Aaron Roberts: "I was watching the offensive line and I was impressed with all of them."
Defensive back Rodney Williams: I wanted to see the communication through the defense, how we matched up against the receivers as well as the audibles with the recognition of the offensive set.

Young QBs Lead TDs Drives in Spring Game (PS; Mink)

Only one quarterback took first-team reps during the first half of Saturday's spring game at the Carrier Dome: Terrel Hunt, the redshirt junior entering Year 2 as the team's starter. His full body of work this spring left no doubt who the man under center will be when Syracuse returns here Aug. 29 against Villanova.

The biggest mystery surrounding the quarterback position this year is who will be No. 2. Which out of the two true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen will the staff feel most comfortable with turning the offense over to if some kind of a catastrophic injury bites Hunt?...

Beckett Wales Says Offensive Communication Improved Significantly in Spring Game (PS; Carlson)

As the Syracuse offense struggled at the outset last season, the Orange blamed communication problems.

At least one former player believes that won't be an issue this season.

Tight end Beckett Wales, who took in yesterday's spring game from the Carrier Dome stands, said the difference between last year's spring game and this year's has been dramatic.

"I can tell the coaches on the sideline are more in sync with each other," Wales said. "Everyone was new, coming from different programs, sometimes they weren't always on the same page. That's what hurt us a little bit last year. Coaches weren't on the same page, so that makes us not on the same page as well. The coaches on the sideline are relaying everything to the players, and you can see they are lined up and ready to go. It's a lot smoother."

Video: QB Coach Tim Lester on the Syracuse QBs (PS; Mink)

Tim Lester was given a scenario. Terrel Hunt, his starting quarterback, is unavailable to play.

Who starts?

The answer is one the Syracuse football team doesn't want to find out. Either way, it's too early to definitively say who would be the starter if Hunt wasn't around.

That was the takeaway from Saturday's spring game, a 34-27 victory for the offense in a game marked by gaudy passing numbers, mostly from the three quarterbacks jockeying for the No. 2 position.

Spring Game Attendance Up, 4071 Attend (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer used Saturday's spring game as his annual plea for Orange fans to rally behind the program.

Based on attendance numbers at the spring event the message may be slowly — very slowly — getting through.

The university announced its official attendance for the spring game as 4,071 fans on Saturday, an uptick over the 3,822 fans in attendance last year during Shafer's first season as a head coach and the 3,716 under Doug Marrone the year before.

"I really want this to be your team," Shafer said during his pre-game speech to the fans. "Our goal is to increase attendance. Our job is to play good football. I want to see this place shake." ...

Wayne Morgan (2) Leads the Charge to the Field for the Spring Game

Spring Game Boosts Hype for Improving Syracuse Program (DO; Wilson)

There were only about 4,071 people in the Carrier Dome for Syracuse’s Spring Game on Saturday, but almost all of them made their way onto the field after the game.

There was a chance to pose for photos with Scott Shafer and get autographs from current and former players. The overhead view was something that more closely resembled the open side of the Dome during a big basketball game than the expectation for an Orange Spring Game.

And in the middle of it all was an older man — probably in his mid 60s — clutching two miniature American flags and sprinting in circles around the Carrier Dome field.

Spring football fever...

McDonald Says Frosh H-Back Cooper Might Redshirt 2014 Season (DO; Wilson)

Despite his hype as one of the first in a line of talented wide receiver recruits to come to Syracuse the past few offseasons, Corey Cooper could redshirt during the 2014 season, SU offensive coordinator George McDonald said.

“If he can play a meaningful impact and help us win games, he’ll probably play,” said McDonald, who also doubles as the wide receivers coach. “If it’s going to be a limited role, he’ll probably redshirt.”

Cooper caught one pass on a post pattern during the second half of the offense’s 34-27 win against the defense in the Spring Game on Saturday, but it could be the only one of his that Orange fans see in the Carrier Dome until 2015. With Brisly Estime already solidified as the starting H-back and Corey Winfield and Sean Avant as more experienced alternatives to Cooper, the wide receiver may have to wait even longer to debut for SU...

Kendall Moore (77) Lined Up at Center in the Spring Game

Who Was Mysterious Player 77? Kendall Moore Lines Up at Center, Delivers Biggest Block of Spring Game (DO; Wilson)

About a week ago, with Syracuse scraping to fill holes on a banged-up offensive line, the coaches decided to experiment.

Kendall Moore doesn’t look like your prototypical center — his gangly build and thin physique made him a tight end for most of last season — but he had already proved his ability to move around the line.

“I was kind of like the next man in,” Moore said. “Once they saw me play they were like, ‘He can kind of play anywhere on the offensive line, so we’ll keep him here for the Spring Game.’”

Donning the No. 77 jersey that head coach Scott Shafer hinted he could bring to the field on game days, and with center Jason Emerich sidelined, Moore lined up at center with the second team and ultimately ended up delivering the biggest block of the offense’s 34-27 win against the defense Saturday.

Even though he is 6 feet, 5 inches, it could be easy to miss Moore checking into the game at center, but when Jeremiah Kobena cut back across the field for a touchdown on a screen pass, he made his presence known...

Megan Marshall, Student Comedian, Brings School Spirit, Enthusiasm to Syracuse (DO; Bundy)

Megan Marshall has lived in Arizona, California, Nebraska and Ohio — but Syracuse University is the only place she calls home.

“When I first came here, I just knew it was the place for me,” said Marshall, a junior education major. “I was driving up University Avenue and I saw Hall of Languages, and I just got emotional.”

Every day since then she has embraced every aspect of SU, whether that is performing in an improvisation comedy group, becoming an orientation leader or leading Gamma Phi Beta as its president.

Her love of SU is apparent to everyone she meets, said her good friend Chloe Beaudoin, a junior public relations major...
