NBA 2017-2018 thread

Since Jordan retired.

That was my first thought. I wonder if there's an easy way to pull conf vs conf records, maybe even in the late 90's the west still beat the east but we didnt realize it since the Bulls won every year

I looked up 98, in that year the East was 243-177 vs the West. Over 82 games, that's 47-35.

Sham is saying Cleveland wanted Jayson Tatum. That held this trade up for 2 weeks.
Cleveland got off wanting Tatum and took the Brooklyn pick.

The biggest off-season NBA story isn't any of the moves. It's Shams becoming the new Woj.

Woj has still by far broken the most stories. Shams is on the come-up though.

This summer though? I feel like (this means I have no evidence of course) Shams has gotten more than his share. I just made the move to get all tweets from him sent directly to my phone. Previously only Woj had that status.

The Real GM Board has already coined the phrase "Shams Bomb". Another status Woj solely held previously.

This summer:
Woj: 47%
Shams: 32%
Chris Haynes: 10%
Other: 11%

It feels like Shams has broken the big deals though. Maybe it's just because I notice when it's not Woj?

Woj vs Shams vs Everyone Else - and it's not even close - RealGM

Here's the list of all the stories. It looks like it hasn't been updated for the past month (granted it's been really slow this past month so there isn't much to add). There's definitely some where both are credited for breaking it too, like I believe both are given credit for Derrick Rose for example.

It's also tough because for example, if Shams tweets that Hardaway Jr is signing with the Knicks but Woj follows it up a minute later with the actual contract figures, which guy deserves the credit?

So... is Melo going to Houston or what? How long does NY plan on dragging this out? Surely they're not jeopardizing a high lottery pick in this draft and the development of KP and youth to spite Melo or whatever it is they're doing...

Last I heard, trade talks had pretty much come to a standstill. I'd like to think something will get done eventually, but it's gotta be tough for New York to just trade Melo for . If they're trading him for a bad long-term contract and a late 1st, is it really worth it to trade him?

I don't know but keeping him all but forfeits a shot at Porter, Bagley or Doncic.

I'm glad my throwaway comment started all this...

In this specific case I would say Shams. The real story is the guy changing teams, the contract terms are less important.

I don't think it's to spite Melo, there's really no way for them to do it right now without taking Ryan Anderson back, which should be a non-starter. They're probably trying to convince him to accept a deal to more teams as well.

Plus, and I'm not saying they'll do this, but remember when they just benched Marbury? They could just sit Melo when the season starts.

Woj was saying earlier this week that Houston is willing to wait for Melo. They really just want him for the stretch run/playoffs.

Not sure without him they can get a pick that high. There's going to be some awful teams in the East especially this year. Atlanta and Chicago for sure.

I'm just going to keep blindly saying that we're due to jump a few teams in the lotto this year. It's gonna happen one of these years!

I don't think the Knicks are nearly bad enough for that anyways unless they want to dump Porzingis too. At worst I think the Knicks are gonna be like the 12th best team in the East with a handful of teams from the West finishing with a worse record as well. I'm guessing you'll end up picking around the 8-10 range even if you end up dumping Melo for essentially nothing.

Should've kept Rose!

I don't think benching Marbury accomplished anything other than creating a zoo and a distraction. Remember when after awhile they had a bunch of guys out and suddenly needed him to play and he said no? LOL. They kinda walked right into that one. The NY media would be all over it, if they tried it with Melo.

I don't really think it's going to happen, just throwing it out there. D'Antoni did the same thing with Nate Robinson for a while as well.

If Anthony Davis became available and I don't see it happening I still think the Celtics have enough ammo to get him.

They got the contract filler in Al Horford.
Then the Lakers/Kings pick
Memphis pick which is going to become a lot better when they made that trade it's top 7 protected in 2019 and then unprotected in!2020.
Tatum/Brown.

I dunno. We've definitely seen some lackluster star packages lately, but I don't think Al Horford is going to be a plus.

A lot depends on Tatum/Brown improving and how the other picks look.

Apparently the Memphis pick is 1-6 protected in 2020 also unprotected in 21. Is there any reason to think it won't convey this year? (So many of these trades are a blur to me, why did Boston trade for Rivers and then move him 3 days later? Just salary filler to make the deal work I assume)

Al Horford would be the money to make the deal happen.
He wouldn't be traded for any other reason.
They would need to trade NO atleast 23 million to match Davis salary.
The Memphis pick isn't till 2019.
It's 1-9 protected in 2019
It's 1-6 protected in 2020.
Unprotected in 2021.
Memphis has problems coming and the West has gotten better with the Lakers coming after next year.

Minnesota and Denver are both coming this year as well. Memphis was 7 seed last year. They lost Z-Bo and are getting older with Conley and Gasol.
