When helmets and uniforms make players play better I will care. Until then, who cares.
They do. All kinds of research has shown that looking good (or a belief that you look) is tied to job performance to some extent. If your job is going to be televised to the world, and you think you got something in your teeth or your tie has got mustard on it or something? It would affect your performance. If a 19 year old kid trying to perform during a national televised game thinks his friends would laugh at his uni - wouldn't it stand to reason that it might affect his performance? How about the reverse? Is there a psychological advantage to thinking you look awesome on TV? My guess is that the age these kids are - it makes some difference.
