New Safeties/Rovers Coach: Darrell Perkins

Seems a wee bit early to conclude any upgrade in coaching staff. Especially since we lost some loyal and long-term coaches, for who knows what in terms of how long these new additions might stay. As in, are they buying houses, or are they going to live in hotel rooms?
If it were me, I'd rent. The business is too crazy.

I don't think you can logically conclude that we upgraded OC and DC. At best it is an either/or. I am happy with both hires and think they will turn out great; just can't make the conclusion "on paper."
I am not sure how the two are related, why it would be one or the other.
You could make the case for DC because Long has more experience and a wait and see on OC because Beck only has one game of experience as OC.

Beck has essentially been mentored by Anae. He has no major college football coordinator experience, and only one year in the role at all. He seems bright, energetic, and full of promise.

Long is basically the Professor Emeritus of the 3-3-5 we've been running. He has major coordinator experience, and head coaching experience. But his last gig was at a last place mid-major. He's replacing a young, well-respected, coordinator on the rise, who has consistently moved up through the coaching ranks and was mentored by Long.

Beck and Long could ultimately both be upgrades, but it is a logically fallacy to think that both Beck and Long will be better. Both are in mentor/mentee situations. You are either holding out for youthful exuberance or venerable experience -you can't have both (unless you are an Orange homer [which we all are]).

All the years of expereince doesnt matter because he chose to coach at New Mexico the last couple years? Coaches go up and down levels all the time. Keep in mind White was getting offers each year. He was gonna leave this year or next. Long doesnt need SU to advance his career so stability and experience makes it a upgrade. Now he still has to prove it at SU but the experience alone is a step up.

It seems from outside, we upgraded at all the coaching positions.

I think Long for White is a new loss, especially on the recruiting side compounded with losing Monroe and Khalid. Hoping the DB/TE coaching additions prove me wrong here.

I love Beck as OC.

Yeah, I don’t see it that way at all. They are both separate individuals with separate experience and backgrounds.

that really wasn’t my point.

You think Beck is an upgrade. You think Long is an upgrade. Why and why? (If you don’t, you can just clarify that. You’ve said the staff was upgraded)

I said the DC is an upgrade. I didn’t understand your reference of Long coaching at a struggling mid major team. Are you blaming him and not Danny Gonzalez?

Jury is still out on Beck but like I said Long is an upgrade. They don’t need him to be young and on the rise. SU is not looking for him to move up the ranks. He’s need to be a DC and he’s a well respect and experienced one. Many years of installing his system, game planning different schemes, making adjustments and developing players to play at a high level. We need that more than anything because we are not getting ready made players. Development and getting guys to play above their HS ratings is crucial. Another benefit of Long is his experience as a HC. He’s another voice that Dino respects and hopefully he will be involved in the in game decisions that Dino struggles with.

Thanks for clarifying.

Let me clarify that I don’t have an issue with Long at all.

Ok but do you want to answer the question I asked? Maybe there is something I’m over looking.

Sorry. I honestly have no clue what happened at New Mexico. I was just pointing out Long has some great experience, but last year seemed like a down one. Doesnt mean he can't be great at SU. I would have preferred keeping White but think Long is an excellent replacement.

I love Tony White but Rocky’s game planning skills make this a huge upgrade. Our defense is going to love playing for him.

l loved White. I can’t say Long is an upgrade from White. But I do know Long is a mile better than Monroe and it’s not close.

Fishers seems like an upgrade as does Farmer.

Gotcha. I was just trying to get an understanding of your concerns. I feel good about having Long's overall experience. White was gonna be out the door. Long was always a coach Dino hoped to get once White left.

Of the position coaches, Fisher is the hire I like the most due to his combo of coaching and recruiting ability. I'm not aware of any of the other incoming assistants having any significant recruiting success. Fisher and Swag would have been a nice combo.

New coaches always live in hotels when they first get in. If they’re married and have school-aged children, they may live in hotels until the summer when their family catches up to them.

You'd think the university would invest in condos or townhomes for the coaching staffs, and ya know, have a cleaning crew and contractor on call for adjustments and changes - might be a nice perk or incentive for potential candidates

Yes, used the phrase to make a point about reining in the horses on claiming to have upgraded the staff. Of course I don't expect these guys to be buying real estate already, in fact, with Dinio's contract, I don't expect them to buy at all.

Lots of colleges have suites for things like that. The Suites at Manley would be nice.. Walk to work every day..

Yup. Start with a lease through January. If you keep your job, renew for a year.
Move into Dino's basement and do yard work in lieu of rent.

For fear of peoples safety and property I never posted this, but Tony Whites family didn’t live in their house at all this year. He was always going to leave. He stayed closer to campus this season. My friend lives down the street from their old house.
I imagine new coaches will rent downtown or on the east side for the first year.
